To think of myself as a girl at 50? [Light-hearted]

Well, I'm sorry, but I do. I don't think I've aged much at all - I don't look much different from when I was 28 I think, (🤭) and I looked girlish then. I'd rather be a girl, which has connotations of freedom and fun, than a woman, which has connotations of too much responsibility!

I think being called a girl is a big compliment. It means you look young. It's equivalent in the States to being called Miss instead of Ma'am. The dreaded ma'am!!!

This thread has been inspired by another thread where the OP says he's confused by a girl at work, who is 41. Some posters objected to any female over the age of 18 being called a girl.

Well, I'll still be identifying as a girl when I'm 80, probably!

Older celebrity women around my age who I think of as girls:
Kate Moss
Jennifer Aniston
Victoria Beckham

In my mind, the above and me are all still 28 but could pass for much younger. 😂😂😂

It's a good day when I'm referred to as a girl. 🤪 Also - and this is the most important part - even though my parents are dead and I'm post-menopausal, I FEEL like a girl!

So, AIBU??

I like the term girl too - woman just conjures up dowdy and boring to me.

To me ‘woman’ is strong and competent with her shit together. ‘Girl’ is the opposite and a term I left behind at adulthood.

The risk of not embracing the reality of your age OP is that you’ll go from being ‘girl’ to ‘old girl’ and that’s way way worse than woman.

TwoRobins · 09/04/2025 07:53

I get where you're coming from.

I have a niece who is 35 and, and though I'm old enough to be her mother, she seems 20 years older than me. Nothing to do with looks, just her general demeanour and the aura of mature, no-nonsense womanly competence. 😅

Boredlass · 09/04/2025 07:53

I honestly don’t care if I get called a girl. The men at work get called boys all the time

soupyspoon · 09/04/2025 07:52

Totally with you OP, Im a girl and Im older than you!

MrsJoanDanvers · 09/04/2025 07:49

I’m in my sixties and feel pretty much the same as I always did but I’m not a girl. I hate girly clothes, drinks and decor. Even when I was younger, I liked being what I call womanly. I like discussing literature, politics and more serious things-girl implies fluffy things. But people can get excited about what we call each other-I cringe when I hear a colleague say she’s out with ‘the girls’ and she’s 50. But if it’s what she likes, who am I to object?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/04/2025 07:49

I’d rather be called a girl in the fun sense of the word. I think I’m my mind I still feel like a girl. However the term has been used in the past to try and undermine me at work, which isn’t ok.

on the whole though I’m glad that adult life hasn’t sucked all the fun out of me and I still feel girl like.

Noodlesandpoodles · 09/04/2025 07:42

My grandmother’s 80 and has had the same group of friends since school, and they still call themselves “the girls”.
We had a picnic in the garden for her 70th birthday and they were sitting on a picnic blanket making daisy chains and drinking (perhaps too much) cider, giggling about their teenage crushes and making (very immature) comments about the size and shape of the sausages…

It reaffirmed my belief that not all of us actually “grow up” and are still very much children at heart.
It was strangely lovely to see my grandmother, a strong woman who has a highly-regarded professional career behind her, has raised multiple children and grandchildren, and has been the hard-faced “rock” of the family laugh at a phallic item of food 😂 It can be very easy to take life too seriously and lose your humour, I’m a victim of that!

Are we not allowed long hair? And what are girly clothes?

I think I’ve missed a memo

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 07:33

Do you have long hair and wear 'girly' clothes?

Passthecake30 · 09/04/2025 07:31

I’m 50 and feel about 26. However if I’m ever out where young-uns go, suddenly I feel geriatric!

emmetgirl · 09/04/2025 07:27

I’m 58 going on 17. Also my back hurts.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/04/2025 07:24

You know “cute” when you’re 50 is different from “cute” when you’re younger don’t you?

I like to think I’m girlish in some ways - energetic, open to new ideas, interested in clothes and always up for trying new experiences, ready to laugh at most things but I also like being a woman - experienced, interesting, respected at work, not afraid to be who I want to be.

Tbh op you sound a bit silly and not the kind of girl or woman I’d want to hand out with. Which would probably suit you fine as well.

Do you think of 28 year old men as boys too?

I have a group of friends from Uni, both sexes, and we refer to the males of the group as ‘the boys’ they’re in their mid 50s.

we've seen each other about three times since Uni but we are in very regular contact outside of this so our heads are probably still there even if our bodies aren’t

notacooldad · 09/04/2025 07:18

I am 60 in a few weeks.
I got called ' young lady ' the other week by a bloke which was nice.
However he was in his 90s so I guess it's all relative! 😆 🤣

SardinesOnGingerbread · 09/04/2025 07:14

I think you can identify however you like. The current climate and generation coming up would help you pretend to be whatever you like, and I say go nuts. If you like the association of the word girl and to believe you look 28 at 51, knock yourself out. But I would say that, like anyone with a strong delusion, you will be the only person you're kidding. Myself, I give a wide swerve to any woman calling themselves a girl.

dottiedodah · 09/04/2025 07:12

I'm older than you and still think of myself as a girl! . My friend commented that my DIL is a nice woman ,whaat nice girl 👧 I think you mean .she is mid 30s

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 09/04/2025 07:05

umm ok.

Tiredbutchorestodo · 09/04/2025 06:52

Teeheehee1579 · 09/04/2025 05:45

God I’m totally with you OP. I get all the reasons women don’t like being called girls but I do. I’m knocking 50 and still feel (and look 🤣🤣🤣) 23 ha ha. I also refer to my also knocking 50 and his friends as boys!

ThisFluentBiscuit · 09/04/2025 05:41

Shubbypubby · 09/04/2025 04:54

if you spent time with actual 28 year olds you would realise that one at 51 looks the same as them.

I'm 50, and I really think I can pass for 28. I got carded when I was 45.

61here · 09/04/2025 05:40

I'm with you! I still feel like the 18 Yr old girl that I was many moons ago. Looking forward to fun and frolics!! I don't want to he an old boring woman - although I expect my kids think I am!!

Magpie50 · 09/04/2025 05:36

I think I'd prefer to be called a gal rather then a girl.....it sounds more feisty!😁

52 here and a life time of being single has probably left me slightly chronologically stunted.
Nobody to tell you that outfit is too young for you or mature adults don't spend an entire afternoon on line gaming!

ValentinesGranny · 09/04/2025 05:16

DH (57) and I (53) have recently become grandparents. DH's DNiece says it feels like we're far too young. The mad thing is she made her DM (SIL) a GP in her early 40s. She says we were always the young thinking ones.

I'm under no illusion I look 28 (I really don't) and no one thinks it either. However, I'm very petite and have even been picked up by men more than once! I think that's definitely based on size, not looks.

stayathomer · 09/04/2025 04:55

I’ve never understood people taking offence at ‘girl’ being used if I’d use boy, guy or lad in the same situation, I think it’s just another thing people take offence at though so I keep it to myself and only use it in eg going out with the girls (going out with the women or ladies definitely does not have the same ring!) (mid 40s)

Shubbypubby · 09/04/2025 04:54
