Paedophile taking his kid to sports at weekend

Pumpkin05 · 06/04/2025 01:03

Long story short information has come to light someone I know was convicted and imprisoned for paedophile charges, some 20 years ago (Information is verifiable)
Flash forward he now has a wife and young child and takes said child to sports clubs and matches at the weekend.
AIBU to think this is strange, and not want my child to attend said sports matches with him there? or am I over-reacting?

I hear you @Pumpkin05 - I wouldn’t be comfortable either.
It’s irrelevant that there are likely to be paedophiles walking amongst us. You now know there is one and you know who it is and you can undo that bit of knowledge.
I presume he has not been castrated surgically or medically. Happy to be corrected that rehab works but I don’t think it does.

An entry level Google search would tell you sex offenders make up those with lowest rates of reoffending

Peadophiles cannot be rehabilitated.

I would be very around him.

Sexual offenders make up those with lowest rates of reoffending

GRex · 06/04/2025 08:12

I would inform police, probation service, club safeguarding and school safeguarding. I would also move my child, in the same way as I remove him from any hazard.

What utter tosh

Well I’m certainly convinced by your cogent rebuttal…🙄

@OP Make sure absolutely everyone at this sports club knows his past, just in case the extensive rehabilitation that turned him into a sweet fluffy bunny hasn’t quite worked and he has access to any kids on play dates.

There are 3 possible sexual orientations - homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual.
Pedophilia is a paraphilia. Some on with that paraphilia can be homo, hetero or bisexual. Please do not mix a paraphilia in with sexual orientation!

No it’s not the same at all. One is legal and there are no victims. The other when acted upon is evil

however the issue of someone being attracted to children is not their fault. It’s their burden and if they act on it it’s their fault

they are broken in some way. But the reality that broke them was unlikely to be their fault. I can’t imagine the self hatred someone who knows it’s wrong and chooses never to act on their urges but feels those urges must feel

BogRollBOGOF · 06/04/2025 07:56

I'd let the safeguarding lead of the club know so they can apply their protocols.

Some years ago, someone "known" to the probation service took up jogging through the park regularly while a children's sporting activity was taking place. Each time he was spotted, we reported through safeguarding practices and the probation service were informed through those procedures.

And you know this how?
Are you a psychiatrist specialising in this particular field? Do you lecture on this from a place of research.
Or are you merely a faily dail, social media believer?

The issue is that a person’s sexual attraction is exactly that. You can’t change someone’s predilection. You can’t coach someone not to be attracted to same sex or opposite sex or children. What can be done is the individual can choose not to act on it and can get therapy to help them choose not to act on it like a. Alcoholic can seek therapy to not drink. But the alcoholic is still within them.
The attraction is going to be there for life. It’s imprinted. A person who feels the attraction isn’t evil. They can’t help it. But they can choose not to act on it. The act is evil. They are stuck with an attraction they can never resolve nor act on. It’s like a gay person isn’t evil for being attracted to others of their sex or a person isn’t broken for being attracted to people if a certain race. The problem with being attracted to children is that acting on their desires is evil and involves a victim. There is a massive problem with people attracted to children unable to seek help to not act on it.
there are millions of people with the attraction that choose not to act on it because they know it’s evil to do so. Those people must live in torment and self hatred.

I'd let the child's school, and the sports club, the police, and social services know that he was attending.

The child's school so they can ensure dad's not on any field trips etc and so they can keep an eye on the child for signs of abuse.

My specific concern would be that because the offence was 20 years ago, this man might not have disclosed his history and his partner may be unaware, because comprehensive electronic records would not have been in place at that time

I imagine if it's common knowledge among bored football mums or whatever then she knows.

I thought child sex offenders weren’t allowed to be within a certain distance of schools and places where kids will likely be, for life? If that’s not true I’m surprised - particularly if this one has actually been convicted bc he’d be on the sex offenders register

It's not true.

When sentencing the judge will make a decision as to how long someone will remain on the register, this doesn't prevent them from doing things - it means they have to register new addresses, holidays and bank details. Some will be on the register for life, most will be 5-10 years.

The Police can apply for other powers such as a Sexual Harm Prevention Order or a Sexual Risk Order - these can come with more specific restrictions but they need to be argued for in court by the CPS for a specific reason, they aren't just handed out.

If he was convicted and went to prison he would have been on licence and managed by the probation service for a time but it's likely in this case to have ended some time ago. Post custody licence includes specific restrictions but this ends when the sentence ends.

bigboykitty · 06/04/2025 07:46

I would make an anonymous call to the NSPCC or the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub in social care, giving the name of the perpetrator and the child and making them aware that the child lives with the perpetrator. They can then do the necessary checks and make sure the appropriate disclosures and risk assessments have been made. I would also make the children's clubs aware of his offending history so he cannot help out or volunteer and they can consider their responsibility to other children - for instance if he were to be part of a lift share arrangement.

And I can tell you that paedophiles are everywhere. So the idea of you knowingly removing yourself from being there them is ridiculous.

Hmm The fact that a hazard may be common doesn't generally mean you don't bother to try and avoid ones you know are there.

Simonjt · 06/04/2025 07:45

If he isn’t on the sex offenders register anymore there isn’t anything legally stopping him going. If he tried to volunteer etc it would show on his DBS which means he wouldn’t then be able to volunteer.

They cannot be rehabilitated. They can make recompense for their offences (if any have been committed, plenty don’t offend) and appear contrite and live a life with no further offending but at the end of the day it is their sexual orientation and nothing can change that.
It’s why a certain section of paedophiles think that they have nothing to be ashamed of and that “paedophilia” should be considered a protected characteristic alongside sexual orientation. I don’t agree by the way.

A paedophile can no more be rehabilitated than the sexual orientation of any individual can be changed at will because they’re told so.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I had spoke to some family yesterday who were on the same train of thought of “he’s done his time etc” but I was under the impression that if that’s his sexual preference he’s not going to just change, so was surprised at their reaction.
I agree with you all that they’re everywhere and it’s better that at least now I know and can give him a wide berth!

Paedophiles are everywhere. OP at least you know about this one.

Take precautions to keep your child safe, if you move them to another club they may be another one at the new club, but you don't know about them.

Sadly pretty much this. There's a convicted paedophile that lives next door to DS' old school (literally) and he sits in the garden and watches them all walk out after school which creeps me out no end- police nor the school could do anything about it. Disgusting though. As has been said all you can really do is take steps to try and protect your child, and if you feel it necessary make the safeguard lead for the club aware.

You don’t have to be his buddy
just you can’t ban an ex offender from normal daily life

No, this poster just has common sense like most of us.

OP, if the details of the case are relevant, i.e. same age group, I would inform the club leaders because this is a safeguarding issue.

Cool username! My kids sometimes pulls this face that looks so much like him and it really unsettles me🤣

Thank you 😁 that would be extremely unsettling 😂

ArtTheClown · 06/04/2025 07:31

He’s done his time

It's a paedophile, not someone who was involved in a drunken brawl when young and foolish.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 06/04/2025 07:31

Depending on the offence, he will certainly have restrictions over where he can work, and quite possibly over where he can visit. Some offenders absolutely are not allowed to attended kids' clubs like this.

I would call the non-emergency police number- they have access to the sex offenders register, and whilst they won't share that information with you, they should take action if he's breaking his conditions.

RobinHeartella · 06/04/2025 07:29

Justgoodforthegetting · 06/04/2025 06:39

Just playing devils advocate here OP but how much of the circumstances of his offending are you actually aware of?

people may disagree with me but I’d argue that an 18 year old having sexual contact with his 15 year old girlfriend then this being reported to police is very different from the same 18 year old grooming them raping or sexually assaulting their 6 year old cousin.

Both are criminal offences, both would lead to the male in question being on the sex offenders register for offences against children.
I’d argue that these two men would present wildly different risks to very young children.

If he is still on the register then he may be subject to certain conditions.
ultimately though, there are genuinely paedophiles absolutely everywhere in society, your children will come into contact with many. Just make sure you safeguard them.

He's served time in actual prison! Do you know how high the bar is for that?! They do not lock up an 18yo with a 15yo girlfriend.

What utter tosh

It’s okay, you don’t have to agree. I am right though. I have worked with and managed enough child sex offenders to know that.

But since you think I’m talking “a load of tosh” would you trust a “rehabilitated” child sex offender to be left alone with your children (real or imagined)?
