Afghan women being denied refuge by government

Maitri108 · 05/04/2025 10:48

It's very disturbing that Afghan women are having their claims turned down. We're all aware of how women can't work or speak in public. Human rights defenders are in grave danger and are being told that they don't face persecution if they go back.

26 women in 2024 had their claims rejected which is absolutely appalling.

I have an idea - stop granting asylum or leave to remain to violent male criminals - most recently a convicted Afghani paedophile - and grant it to non violent women instead.

Our immigration courts are not fit for purpose. These mad decisions on supposed human rights grounds just increase racism and hate and make British society even less safe for women.

Will these women leave their sons behind then?

The West is not responsible for how the Taliban treat women. The US however, funded and encouraged extremist Islam in its fight against the USSR.

You'll be interested to know that Al Qaida was funded and trained by the US. Fast forward, Trump negotiated with the Taliban and released thousands of extremists before leaving Afghanistan to its fate after its invasion and occupation.

Western interference in Iran, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and the consequences are a sight to behold.

People can't see that Trump is now mates with Putin, supports trad wives and Meta brainwashing incels. He managed to dupe the US into re-electing him and now the world is paying for letting him off the hook for his illegal activities and "grab women by the pussy" comments and behaviour. He's changing the world alright, just not in the way we hoped for.

I think people down play the agency and role of the rulers making these draconian decisions though when the West’s role is highlighted. I don’t think it helps to do that.

Did Labour change asylum rules for Afghanistan? I recall it vaguely

Yep. If we were a large empty homes haven with our own house sorted out it would be different. But poverty is 50% in some areas. We can’t take in any more when we won’t even look after our own

Yes. We can’t help the world, until we’ve helped those that need it here. 🤷‍♀️

99% of claims are approved, so why are you making a big deal out of 26 people?

The grant rate for Afghan cases has gone down from 98.5% in the last quarter of 2023 to 36% in the last quarter of 2024.

This. It breaks my heart hearing all of the talented women who were achieving so much now being locked indoors and governed by men with barely any education, just guns. Even their family members get killed if they support women. We are crying out for midwives, nurses, doctors, nursery workers and teachers. We really should be more open to the women suffering in Afghanistan who want to help others but are imprisoned in their own homes.

Edited

With half a million young people out of work for basically no good reason, shouldn’t we be training them?

We can’t just be a small island with a population in the hundreds of millions, with high unemployment and benefit claimant rates, propped up by a few billionaires. But everyone acts like we can be and there is some fantasy economics which will save us ‘if the will was there..’

I’m not sure the West are responsible for how women and girls are currently treated in Afghanistan and some other countries.

The decision to hold them as almost prisoners is down to the current rulers. The laws they bring in, which are getting worse, could be lifted if they wanted to.

Well, quite. Do we interfere in an independent nation in the Middle East again, or not? Is there a right meddling and a wrong meddling? Most of these women will not speak English and will have small children to care for and won’t be able to work for a long time. How do we support them?

Jaessa · 06/04/2025 01:08

Good, we can't take any more. We should be helping our own homeless, drug addicted and exploited women first

I've heard this type of argument alot but will you? It seems to be the common answer but will you actually go and help a British homeless person? Maybe even just one since you don't think you should help this particular lady.

If you don't do that either then neither party is getting helped and that argument just creates smug apathy (imho). Not that I'm in any way perfect but this thread has made me decide to write to my MP.

I thought you were against "western interference" in Afghanistan Maitri108? And what happens when it's found that too many Afghans don't want change - at least not the type which would further women's interests?

Nobody pretends that what's happening is pretty, but I've yet to see any workable suggestions for what can actually be done about it and which won't lead to yet more claims that everything's the west's fault

Your sarcasm detector needs some tuning.

Because those 26 people are actual humans who will almost certainly suffer persecution, torture and/or death if deported to Afghanistan?

I wish you were one of the 26 in question instead tbh.

The West, predominantly the US and UK, have been interfering in the ME for decades. IMO they're largely responsible for the current refugee crisis.

The amount of people who think Britain alone in the world accepts asylum seekers is just….sigh.

Why can’t people read more?!

It stands to reason that people will flee to neighbouring countries. I'm not sure why people think we're the only country in the world taking in asylum seekers.

What I don't understand is that our birth and fertility rate is falling, we are top heavy in age meaning we need more carers and caring professions. How are we "full"? The VAT on private schools has been trotted out with "there are plenty of spaces in state schools for them all to move into state sector" yet we don't seem to have space for more people in anything else? I think if they can work bring them in, they can be therapists and doctors for the homeless who need addiction issues sorting out, help us with our CAHMs backlog. Get those homeless and mentally unwell people who want to work back to it.

Edited

Oh you need to read between the lines.

We are full to brown muslims. For thousands of Ukranians we have all the space in the world.

No one is suggesting we take in every single asylum seeker.

Colombia, Germany, Iran, Turkey and Uganda have almost one-third of the world’s refugees

Iran 3.8 million
Turkey 3.1 million
Colombia 2.8 million
Germany 2.7 million
Uganda 1.7 million

69 % of refugees live in countries neighbouring their countries of origin.

If we make simply being female from a country such as Afghanistan a reason for asylum then are we also happy for their families to come over including their male relatives? You know the ones causing the problem?

We can't take everyone.

Why would allowing entry to women under a certain asylum scheme mean accepting their male relatives?

Personally, I would send all the people who are keen on denying refuge to Afghan women to Afghanistan. But that’s just me I guess.

I'm going to do this. I can imagine it's grotesque behaviour on the part of the West.

Best to keep an open mind if you're not already aware of a lot of the issues, Wishyouwerehere50 and to read responsibly as opposed to outlets dedicated to one point of view only

If it's actual news you're after Reuters and Associated Press, while not perfect, are often better than most, and for overviews I'd recommend finding a reputable scholar to guide you through it

While it can be hard work the results are worth it IME, and at least you'd avoid the shrieking headlines of the hideously biased rags, the lobbyists who've completely sold out and more

Google UK interference in West Asia and enjoy the horrors.

I'd love to have a better understanding of all this.

I've read a fair bit about western involvement in areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan and see how much worse things have been for some resultantly. I need to learn more. The majority of the public won't fully understand this either. They don't exactly promote awareness to this understandably.
