Wholeheartedly agree! Caitlin Moran is a self aggrandising grifter who’d turn up at opening of an envelope if she thought there was something in it for her
Her book about girls was dire too

Whooowhooohoo · 04/04/2025 16:26

Just another loser looking for a way to monetize her barely known name. Now thinking mom-fluencer … taking advantage of attention that “Adolescence” movie has generated.

AInightingale · 04/04/2025 16:26

Moran wrote very frivolously about abortion, joking about having a pang of regret when seeing the baby's hand gestures on the ultrasound, thinking she might have been aborting her 'gay son'. (Presumably less toxic that one of those non-gay boys). Then quipping that she gave her termination less thought that choosing kitchen worktops. I'm not moralising about abortion but at the same time, someone like that should not be pontificating on rearing kids with healthy self-esteem.

Or the vast majority of us (including yourself I presume) are doing a perfectly fine job of raising teen boys and don't need someone who has never raised one to step in and tell us she knows best.

Maybe so - but the mothers of girls will be more likely to know what those boys are like towards their daughters when Mum isn't there.

I had a look -
“When researching my book, What About Men?, I asked dozens of experts for their advice on bringing up happier teenage boys - who live in a world of online chatrooms where talk of depression can be met with emojis of nooses and knives, and boys are encouraged to mistrust adults who “don’t understand” the realities of their lives. Here are five things I learned.”

I mean I guess it’s not just her opinions alone but stuff she’s researched from others that may or may not be useful

Exactly … sometimes MN baffles me.
it can be so supportive and then other times brutal towards other women.

As a mum of 5 boys and 3 girls I feel similar, the whole messaging around Adolescence has been very anti boy, reign in your sons before it's too late, boys are a dangerous species etc. Yes some boys will go on to commit terrible acts but most don't, I've found them easier in some ways as teenagers

It hasn't come across that way to me at all. I read it as protect your sons as they are vulnerable to harmful online influences, not rein them in. I've seen very few conversations arising from the drama that are 'anti boy', far more concerned about the impact on boys of societal influences, with the 'blame' and problem seem as lying with them rather than with individual boys. My boys are adults now, but I'd have been very glad of conversations raising my awareness of things that they may be prey to.

I have a son AND he hasn’t killed anyone (as far as I know). Can mumsnet pay me £££ to share some advice too?

That really not how it works round here.

You pay Mumsnet the £ (or hand over your data) and share some advice for free.

Wait, what? Mumsnet deactivated your account because you posted negatively about an article they paid someone to write?

She's a cowardly, self-promoting, cool girl handmaiden. She can fuck off.

Aw really ?? I like her. She’s bright intelligent witty and self made… and piercingly observant - cracks me up.

quite a brutal opinion.. do you know her? Has she personally hurt you in some way?

Ponderingwindow · 04/04/2025 16:17

Are you upset purely because she is not the mother of boys?
It all reads as very standard advice on how to talk to teenagers and get them to actually communicate.

are you upset at the insinuation that there is a problem with many young teenage boys and how they treat girls?
guess what. As the mother of a girl I can tell you that there absolutely is a problem. It isn’t a particularly new problem. That doesn’t matter. It needs to stop. It’s 2025. It shouldn’t still be happening. Parents of those boys need to do better.

MeridianB · 04/04/2025 16:16

Agree, OP.

She was very over-exposed and over-rated for way too long. Maybe this is her attempt to diversify but it’s tone deaf of Mumsnet.

Yeah
To be fair, anyone who thinks a woman can have a penis would not be someone I would look to for advice on anything. Especially raising children.

TesterP0t · 04/04/2025 16:09

I like Caitlin Moran. Why can’t she give advice? Never a day goes by without mums of girls starting threads re parenting boys.

Me too … she’s fab.

Mothers of girls are allowed to have opinions on the parenting of boys? 🤷‍♀️

Would you welcome mothers of only boys offering advice on raising girls?

I don’t think I would.

Just a bit of honest self reflection

stayathomer · 04/04/2025 16:12

Ps for anyone who hasn’t read the article she doesn’t seem to be coming at it from a mother of girls direction, she’s saying this is how we should talk to boys

stayathomer · 04/04/2025 16:10

I thought that too op, I’ve 4 boys and wouldn’t have give advice to parents of girls because I’ve no idea how girls speak to their parents, interact with them etc. we once took our niece for a night and it was such a different kettle of fish!

Snorlaxo · 04/04/2025 16:10

I have boys and a girl but I’m old enough to know that plenty of mums of girls (or even childless women) may spend time with boys too eg nephews, neighbours, boyfriends of daughters… I don’t think it’s insulting to ask a mum of girls to comment on what they think boys should be hearing. I don’t know what my sons are like at school and away from home where as these daughters may know a different side to my sons

I have no interest in the musings of newspaper columnists. They are paid to rage bait to raise their own and the newspaper’s profile. I’m not going to read the post in question either because I’m not bothered what a random famous person has to say and nor should you

Onlyonekenobe · 04/04/2025 16:09

As the mother of both sons and daughters, I very much use my daughters' experiences to inform how I talk to my sons, never having been one myself.

YABU.

(Don't know who Caitlin Moran is, just addressing your actual point).

It’s all over the banner on mumsnet

I clicked it and such nuggets of advice as not to sit how sons down and ask them if they’re planning to murder someone

and fact she doesn’t have sons but thinks in all her wisdom she should tell us how to speak to our sons is…. Well a bit silly

Edited

My mumsnet banner is jet2 holidays 🤣

I feel like girls behaviour is becoming increasingly worse also. Had a few instances where I live of horrific bullying. But it sometimes comes accross like girls can do no wrong.

I don't disagree with the point's raised in Adolescence but it's not an accurate repusentation of the teenage boys in general.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 04/04/2025 16:02

Smallmercies · 04/04/2025 15:52

No wonder there are so many incels and misogynists among teenage boys when their mothers are so defensive and unwilling to hear what mothers of girls are saying. Every future lazy father, abusive husband and male sex offender is currently being raised in homes all over the UK.

A saying I once remember hearing...
Our sons should be raised as gentleman and our Daughters to expect no less...
I liked that advice.

Alas though, I've seen some girls that had my DS of been single i'd not want them introduced to....not all are sugar and spice.
