What do you think of this bridesmaids look (totally different dresses)

I’m having a Summer wedding in a beautiful manicured garden (weather permitting - it is abroad so very likely)

I have come across this image and think it’s just lovely. I had been looking at various shades of teal. So don’t know if I am drawn to this style just because I am over looking at blue dresses or if I genuinely prefer it.

What do you think? I will have 4 bridesmaids

I really don’t like many dresses labelled “bridesmaids” dresses so it appeals that I can just give each bridesmaid a colour and they can find a knockout dress in said colour

I think the reason why your first photo works is that it is very much a sugared almond palette and attention has been given to the flowers to make it look deliberate. So if for eg having selected a colour everything that bridesmaid has is in that colour - so shoes flowers and any jewellery or hair reflects that it should look considered. If you can then incorporate all the colours into other aspects of the wedding theme - eg venue/table flowers/corsages for groomsmen and mothers etc it will all start to look much more cohesive. I'd also set a few rules for the bridesmaid dresses - eg all floor length with elbow length sleeves (or strapless with a shrug that can come off later).

I think it would be best to either do the same style dress but let everyone choose their own colour, or choose a colour and let them choose their own shade of that colour and style of dress. I went to a wedding once where the colour was green and the bridesmaids all had different style dresses in different shades of green (some might have had patterns as well, I can't remember now). It looked really good.

I’ve been looking non stop at bridesmaid dresses

but is it just me but or is the same colour/fabric but different silhouette/style look a bit over done. Especially in satin. I assumed that’s what I would go for but I am really pulling away from it

I like the mix of pastel colours but these bridesmaids don’t look like bridesmaids, they are wearing average looking dresses that you’d wear on a summer day so I do think they’d need something a bit more wow

BogRollBOGOF · 04/04/2025 17:06

The fabrics need to be the same texture and they need to be unified by features like length.
The easier way to do it (but not cheap) is to get bridesmaid dresses from the same brand which should have complimentary tones of colour in the range. Letting them select dresses independently runs the risk of coming back with dresses of clashing tones/ saturation.

The hairstyles are all similar on the pictures that work more effectively.

Satin can be a very unforgiving fabric.

BeatleBattleInABottle · 04/04/2025 17:02

I love bridesmaids choosing their own dresses and not having them wear the same thing. Plus it's less likely the dress will be stuck in a wardrobe afterwards.

I prefer it when they either have a set pallet (eg any dress in pink) or a set style (eg any longer evening dress in black) as that looks more coherent and it's clear they are BMs not guests.

If you're going with this look, you need to be clear what you would like eg would you prefer to check the dress before hand or do you trust them? How much are you willing to contribute towards the dress?

Plife · 04/04/2025 17:01

What about this? For some reason I’m not so keen on having different dresses in the same colour family. Seems too contrived. Not as relaxed as the first images I shared. In my opinion. I prefer different colours.

I think, to make sure the bride doesn’t get lost in all the other dresses, they could be one colour but different styles or shades of one colour different styles. Styles should still have some uniformity though (all long etc). Or different colours, same style. There are a few options away from the same colour same style.

katmarie · 04/04/2025 16:41

I had two adult bridesmaids whei I got married. We ended up going with the same dress style, in two different colours, and then I switched the tie belts on the dresses so they each had the other's colour belt. It worked quite nicely, they went together without being too matchy. I do like the whole different dresses, different colours look, though, but I do feel like something should tie them together.

I love the mixed look, very pretty, natural and modern. Go for it!

MsNevermore · 04/04/2025 16:34

I love it.
Also different styles of dresses is always great because not everyone is going to be the same shape and size 🤷🏻‍♀️ This way everyone has a dress that flatters their figure and they are comfortable in.
When I got married, my sister was my only adult bridesmaid. I knew what colour I wanted the dress to be (which she also liked!) but then I let her loose in the shop to choose the style she liked best and would be most comfortable in. She ended up choosing a floor length, empire-line dress and it was perfect for her!

I like the overall aesthetic but I feel like it kind of takes attention away from the brides dress

Ah yes you could have a point there (though I do like the aesthetic very much).

Yeah it's really overdone. Bit like the all-grey decor trend that everybody now shuns.

VeryNiceDay · 04/04/2025 16:31

I think the problem is that all the bridesmaids look nicer than the bride as she is in a relatively plain dress, with it being white.

I absolutely love the one on the right.

I am also currently obsessed with bridesmaid dresses- my future DIL has asked my DD and my other DIL as well as 2 friends.

She said to me that she wants them to get a dress they love and feel great in on the day. They all have very different shapes and colouring and there is no way they would all look good in the same dress or even the exact same colour.

I think giving guidance-such as shades of blue or pastels or jewel tones-the second picture is perfect-they all "go" but don't match.

They sent me a link to their photographer and I looked at some of the weddings-almost no one has "matchy matchy" dresses-seems very old fashioned now to me!

I was a bridesmaid in 6 weddings and wore some of the most spectacularly awful dresses you have ever seen-including one that had to be deliberate 😂

Good luck!!

BunnyLake · 04/04/2025 16:26

I like it. In fact I like the mix of colours much better than one uniform colour.

Comedycook · 04/04/2025 16:25

CarpetKnees · 04/04/2025 16:24

It is very fashionable now, I know, but for me, if you are asking more than one person to be bridesmaid, I think there hast to be something that links them together - whether different styles in same colour, or the different colours of the same style would work, but if you are having multiple bridesmaids, I feel there needs to be something that links them together and sets them apart from other guests on the day.

MikeRafone · 04/04/2025 16:22

that picture is so pretty, it reminds me of an afternoon crockery for tea and cake in patterns with flowers.

I wouldn't want the dress with a split, I like the green dress on the left

itsjustbiology · 04/04/2025 16:16

I think this is a lovely idea. My son and his husband had 3 bridesmaids each and they were all women. My son wanted blush for his so he sent the ladies off to choose what they liked and my son in law wanted navy so he sent his off. Not one dress was the same and they looked amazing. In my view they were all classy. The flower girls and page boys all wore what their mums chose as they were tiny tots but the bridesmaids stole the show!

LazyArsedMagician · 04/04/2025 16:10

Do whatever you like. It's your wedding.

Plife · 04/04/2025 16:03

I assumed I would do something like this in more of a teal colour. But since starting to look for dresses I have sort of become quite over it. No offence to the people in the pic they are obviously beyond stunning regardless of what they wear

My mum and dad had different coloured bridesmaids dresses at their wedding in the 60s although their bridesmaids were 'littles'. From memory I think they were sugar almond colours which matched the freesias in my mum's bouquet. I've always thought it's a lovely idea.

PayingItBack · 04/04/2025 15:57

I like the 'odd' bridesmaids look but with some guidelines, ie, all the same length, within a colour family like pastel, similar material if possible to tie the look together. I think one satin, one tulle, one velvet would look silly.

CosyDenimShark · 04/04/2025 15:56

My friend owns a bridal shop and she says this idea is becoming more and more popular. Maybe give a colour palette and ask them to send a photo before buying?
I agree that different body types look better in different styles so I quite like the mis match style.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 04/04/2025 15:53

I think that initial photo looks lovely - because although they are all different they have similarities e.g pastels, not long sleeved or high necked, floor length etc. so I’d choose some ground rules and then let your bridesmaids choose.

I think the ‘satin dress, same colour but different necklines/styles’ look is a bit dated now
