To be frustrated with the school about the Easter egg situation?

So, the school sent home a note last week about the “Easter egg raffle” they’re doing, asking for donations of Easter eggs for the kids to win as prizes. Fair enough, I thought, seems like a nice thing to do.

But here’s the issue: they want each child to donate an Easter egg by tomorrow. Fine, except… my children have been having Easter eggs since early March because, well, they’re kids. The idea of giving yet another egg just seems so unnecessary to me. I’m already drowning in chocolate from my own absolutely brilliant planning of Easter, and I’m not sure I want to add to the pile just for the school raffle. Plus, when I mentioned it to a few other parents, it turns out they all feel the same!

It feels like they just don’t get it. I already pay for everything (I’m talking school trips, PTA fundraisers, fancy dress days, the whole shebang) and now it’s Easter eggs as well? I’m all for supporting the school, but they never ask for things in a way that’s actually affordable or considerate of family budgets. AIBU to feel like this is just another example of unnecessary school demands?

Also, they’ve made it clear that if you don’t donate, your child might not get to participate in the raffle. I get the whole “voluntary contribution” thing, but when it’s linked to something like this, it just feels a bit much. Honestly, I can’t be the only one who thinks this is all a bit tone-deaf.

Am I being unreasonable or is it just another case of the school not understanding how much we’re all juggling at the moment?

TL;DR: AIBU to be frustrated that the school expects us to donate an Easter egg on top of everything else, and if we don’t, our kids miss out on the raffle?

YABVVVU. Just buy a simple egg for £1 and also stop buying them to eat at home before Easter! Most people I know genuinely don’t start on the proper eggs until Easter Sunday- they might have a cheeky cream egg or some mini eggs.

It’s honestly parents like you that literally moan about anything that stop schools trying to do fun stuff.

harijes · 03/04/2025 20:29

Here is a plan.

stop giving your kids eggs till Easter.

get involved in the event and suggest an alternative way. I don’t know. Everyone donate one of their eggs and give them to charity. Something like that. Each raffle ticket is for a different charity or place locally and the child can take it or they can collect it

don’t make it a negative.

you must see the basics

,
my children have to much chocolate
I do not want to donate theirs
I do not want to buy more, so they get equal back.

just get involved and teach them that giving is not about receiving

I’m just gobsmacked you are eating Easter eggs already? Unless I’ve read wrong…

Agreed! That's way more unreasonable and unusual than the school running a seasonal raffle.

SalfordQuays · 03/04/2025 20:28

Here’s what I think is happening. The school or PTA wanted to do something fun for the kids. Also, they know that there are some poor or neglected kids whose parents can’t/won’t buy them an Easter egg. So the plan is to get as many people as possible to donate, and the PTA will make up the shortfall, so everyone an egg.

The “threat” of “no egg if no donation” is just to ensure that most people donate an egg.

It’s a bit like when there are school trips, and they ask for a voluntary donation, but make it clear that if not enough people pay, the trip won’t happen. The assumption (usually correct) is that everyone who can afford it will pay, enabling the kids who can’t afford it to go on a trip too.

OP just because your kids have been guzzling chocolate for a month, doesn’t mean other kids get the same.

Er, what the fuck?

Exactly. Do you let them open Christmas presents all through December as well?

Pricelessadvice · 03/04/2025 20:28

Why have your kids had Easter eggs before Easter? Is nothing just for special occasions anymore?

Just donate an egg, it’s literally a couple of quid.

frozendaisy · 03/04/2025 20:27

my children have been having Easter eggs since early March because, well, they’re kids. The idea of giving yet another egg just seems so unnecessary to me

Say what now?

So don't do it OP you can make a stand against this insanity of egg giving at school and just give your children many eggs before they even break up. It's not really about community and coming together it's about consumerist gluttony beforehand. Because they are kids and they don't understand. I get it.

Honestly your kids will probably think it nothing special and it's not worth the hassle so I would duck out. Then you can forget about it. And have a lovely Easter Holiday.

Mumof2girls2121 · 03/04/2025 20:26

Your kids might be drowning in chocolate but there are some kids who don’t get an Easter egg, the schools usually make sure the ones who are known to not be as privileged get them.

latetothefisting · 03/04/2025 20:25

If you're "drowning in chocolate" then
...give one of the eggs to the school - 2 birds, 1 stone.

I usually try to not to resort to "first world problems"mockey but....really? This is worth posting a multi paragraph post about? If you can afford to "drown in chocolate" and buy your kids multiple eggs for several months then how on earth is ONE chocolate egg an excessive ask from the school? Schools can absolutely be a bit unthinking at times in relation to donations/costumes etc but buying a very cheap item that is easily available everywhere is as inclusive as it is possible to be!

Some people are never satisfied!

Brefugee · 03/04/2025 20:23

sounds like a "you problem" if you're constantly letting your kids have easter eggs when it's not yet easter.

Send in a cheapo one.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 03/04/2025 20:23

Just give an egg you’ve already got? My kids haven’t had a single egg yet.

INeedAnotherName · 03/04/2025 20:22

It's not the school's fault you are teaching your children to become chocolate 🐷 If you really have too many easter eggs then just donate one of yours rather than buy another one. Or tell your children the reason they can't be part of the raffle is because you are too tight to spend a pound. It really isn't that difficult a problem.

DappledThings · 03/04/2025 20:21

I guess I’m frustrated because it feels like the school is setting up a situation where if you don’t donate, your kid might miss out, and I don’t want them to feel left out. It’s the constant “if you don’t give, your kid doesn’t get” vibe that’s bothering me. Maybe it’s a first world problem, but it does make me question how many of these things are really needed, you know?
Sounds like you projecting. Would be highly unusual for any child's participation to be dependent on them contributing. If you feel guilty for not contributing that's on you. I'd be surprised if it's the school or PTA trying to set up that "vibe".

AuraBora · 03/04/2025 20:21

This is one of the most ridiculous posts I've read in a while.
What a non dilemma, seriously!
Never heard of anyone giving their kids eggs weeks before Easter..!

saraclara · 03/04/2025 20:20

Do you give your kids Christmas presents throughout December as well? Because they're...kids?

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. The school is doing nothing unreasonable. Because most parents DON'T feed their kids Easter eggs until it's actually Easter.

I totally get where you’re coming from, and maybe I’m just being a bit oversensitive about it all. I suppose it just feels like these little “add-ons” are becoming more frequent, and they do add up. The Easter egg thing is just the latest in a long line of little asks that I didn’t think would be such a big deal, but it feels like they’re piling on. And I know I’m probably the odd one out with the whole chocolate thing, it’s just we had Easter stuff a bit early with the family, so the whole “Easter egg” tradition feels a little diluted already.

OP if you’re worried about first world excess, why do you feed your kids chocolate for a month before Easter?

Firawla · 03/04/2025 20:20

Totally lost me already at your kids already drowning in a pile of chocolate Easter eggs. Why???? And then you go on to complain about too much chocolate. If you’re giving them Easter eggs already are you not a huge part of the problem in that regard. How are school supposed to know your kids have been eating non stop Easter eggs over a month early?!

Iwannakeepondancing · 03/04/2025 20:19

I don’t get the issue! It’s like £1.25 for an egg or donate one of the many you already have if you have so many!
All schools have these things and it’s not exactly expensive! I feel you’re being a bit sensitive!

Zanatdy · 03/04/2025 20:18

It’s going to cost you a couple of quid. Why would you be giving kids easter eggs for weeks before Easter? I’m guessing you’re in the minority of kids being fed up of easter eggs before Easter. Mine get one egg, two at a push on easter weekend. Maybe some mini eggs in the lead, but never given them eggs before easter.

Sofiewoo · 03/04/2025 20:18

It’s not really the schools fault you’ve been giving your kids Easter eggs since the start of March!
My kids got an egg from school day, but they don’t get it until Easter because it’s an Easter egg, surely that’s the normal way to do it?

SophieJo · 03/04/2025 20:18

Just donate one of the many you seem to have and don’t embarrass your kids!

Is it the school or is it the PTA? I think you need to distinguish between the two.

LlynTegid · 03/04/2025 20:17

I agree about the short notice, regardless of what it is for.

I do think that you should not be eating Easter eggs for weeks though.

I genuinely don’t know if you’re worried your kids have too much chocolate or not enough!
