Get in the damn queue!

TakesallSortsofPotatoes · 03/04/2025 16:58

Is anybody else irritated at people who stand miles away from the queue, so you think they're not in the queue? You either have to ask them if they're in the queue (if you're able to successfully get their attention), assume they're not, because why would they not be standing actually in it and walk past, or wait like an idiot behind them with a huge disjointed queue.

I'm also noticing loitering people blocking gateways, with no regards for anybody else who should need through. What are these people doing?

Anybody else want to partake in a rant at situations like this that irritate you?

The too close v. too far away queue argument is weird, it's not one thing or the other. There is a happy medium of queuing where you're evidently in a line but not nuzzling the person in front's neck.

MN is, as ever, a place of extremes.

And @ruethewhirl

The queue does not move any quicker just because the person in front likes their space. You won't get to the front any sooner.

Edited

I was going to say this - people that insist on standing an inch away from your back at the checkout, it won't make you get served any quicker, ignoramus 😑

For me, it's people who get to the ticket barriers at the station, and only then start ferretting about in their bag looking for their ticket, blocking the barrier for anyone else.

These people are a gift for fare dodgers. The weird loiterers in busy tube stations are watching for people with tickets and/or who seem unsure, and follow them through the barriers.

Supperlite · 03/04/2025 20:58

Queues to leave the bus. When I was younger (not that long ago?!) you’d let someone in front of you get out their seat and join the queue out of politeness. Now everyone just barges past trying to get off quickest. And, though not queue related, I can’t stand it when people allow the sound of their phone or iPad/etc to be heard. It’s so anti-social!

Where has common courtesy gone?!

You can’t ime till you have finished and paid for the items or is there a way round this

You can't pack your stuff if you're using one of the self checkouts that has a conveyor belt but I'm talking about the small ones that you'd use if you just had a basket of items.
Your basket goes at one side, you scan and then put the item at the other side, I just have a bag waiting at that side and put things straight into it.

Omg I needed this thread today. People who don't look where they're going and seem surprised when they walk into you. People sitting in the outside lane on a dual carriageway or motorway going less than the speed limit - just WHY?! Finally, people who push past you while saying 'sorry, can I just...' instead just saying 'excuse me please' and giving you a chance to move. When this did this pushing through saying 'sorry' become a thing?! 🤷‍♀️ phew! Rant over 🤣

I had the outside lane hogger on my way home tonight. I was coming up to my exit so I indicated and moved over and the wanker moved straight in front of me. So he wasn't merely a lane hogger but a sexist arse of a man who couldn't allow himself to be overtaken by a woman.

Dahliasarebeautiful · 03/04/2025 20:51

People who can't park properly on my road and leave half a car space between them and the next car so you lose even more room to park. It especially grinds my fears (no pun intended) when they don't even live in my road and leave their car badly parked for weeks on end.. grrrrrr

🤣 Yes! In the doorway of the supermarket.
Just inside, no leeway, no legroom. It is like they've wondered where they are and stopped in confusion. Set down by aliens.

They're not bloody confused, and they weren't set down... they've taken that moment to plan their shopping list.

Don't mind me, I'll work around you!!! Which gets you a filthy look.
Which gets them a death stare.

😂 Always a man scratching his head/balls/arse, and lurking in the inbetween door area in Asda, Morrisons you name it, and they don't move! "Get the hell out of the way I need a basket." They are always the same ones that look at stuff aimlessly in random aisles, with no intentions of buying it. They just wander about, night of the living zombies I swear!

When I'm queuing to use a self service checkout and waiting for the people who scan their items, pay and THEN retrieve a carrier bag and slowly start to pack everything.
NO! Just bloody pack your items as you go. Scan your milk and then put it in a carrier, then scan your bread and put that in the carrier too. It's not bloody difficult!

You can’t ime till you have finished and paid for the items or is there a way round this

I travel a lot and I have to say, the penchant for queuing in Britain is fantastic. Not everyone does it properly all the time, but I thank you all SO MUCH for doing it mostly right most of the time.

Latin America.... chaos. Very poor queue etiquette.

Morocco... the worst. Just arrived in Tangeir. Checking into the hotel. Woman sitting on the sofa in the lobby area, I assume she's with a man who is being served. I queue behind him. He's done, I move forward. She appears in front of me gesturing that she's next. How tf was I to know? No queue whatsoever.

Same hotel, checking out. I'm queueing. 2 staff serving. 2 new staff appear further along the counter. Instead of calling for the next person waiting, two men come through the door and walk right up to them and they get served. I just slapped my key card on the counter, said "I'm not just standing here for decoration you know" and left. If they can't serve people in order, I'm not gonna wait for them. Massive queue rage that visit.

Suddenly a new cashier appears to finally opens the next till and they say 'next' and within a millisecond before the cashier has reached the till usually some utter fuckwit from the back of the queue (or sometimes not even in the queue but someone who was just walking that way) has bowling balled down like a lightning bolt to grab the first spot.

Ah, the Laldi experience!

this has the potential to be a new competitive sport,

My irritation is shoppers who browse the shelves for ages at the supermarket with their full trolley lined up against the shelf, blocking the whole section.

That was me.at the weekend. However in my defence I was searching for Marks and Spencers extra choclatly chocolate covered custard creams. And they are worth the search.

This may be London-centric, but people who just abandon their Lime or similar bikes in the middle of the pavement with no regard whatsoever for people with visual impairments or mobility problems, wheelchair users, people with pushchairs. Especially if it's fallen on its side! Slowly being tackled by local councils, I believe, insisting they have to be docked in designated areas. Long overdue.

It's the same where I live and we have e-scooters too which are also flung on the ground blocking narrow pavements. Both are an utter menance to people with who have visual problems and parents with buggies and of course the less mobile who have to manovere a way round them. The bikes and the scooters are mainly ridden on the pavements and us pedestrians have to leap out of their way as they power along. I have even been sworn at for getting in the way!

TheBuffetInspector · 03/04/2025 20:41

Covid was marvellous for stressed hilarity at our local Asda...

So the arrows are going up down in the aisles but by the tills they just pointed from entrance to exit.

So people have gone up the penultimate aisle and down the last one, but... Give me strength, because the arrow is still pointing toward the back wall there's a massive queue forming on the last aisle behind the idiot who won't move even though they can see a row of empty tills.

I didn't need anything from last aisle so just went straight to a till and there was uproar! We've been queuing here for 20 minutes! How dare you?!

Well, you see that arrow there? The one stopping you from walking to an empty till, keep following it then. That's right, straight through the freezer, the brick wall, on to the street and queue for Costa next door! Eejits!

It's not like the staff helped. Ooh nobody at the tills, where could they all be? I don't care 🤣

People are just a pain in the arse. Myself included. Pet hate: the person behind you in the supermarket who begins unloading their trolley load onto the conveyor belt when half your shopping is still in the trolley, and gives you about 3 inches of space to fit it all in. That won't get my groceries through any faster, pal. Back off.

But while we're at the checkout, I never really understand the complaints about people reaching for their purse/wallet/phone to pay after they've packed the shopping. You can't pay for it until it's been scanned, and I don't see how having your method of payment in one hand at all times could speed up the packing process.

Line up the handle of the trolley with the end of the belt. They can't get near it then.

This but in the supermarket- especially when they’ve waited in a queue. Drives me berserk - especially men pat-patting themselves down to locate their wallet. Do people not realise they’ll have to pay for their stuff!

It’s the people who walk out of a shop/cafe and then just stop in the doorway to have a wee think about where to go next, and you’re walking out behind them and have to emergency brake yourself before you head butt their back. Tops of escalators too! They annoy me more than the queue deceptors.

Edited

Or the two women in front of me who got to the bottom of the escalator last week, stepped off and just stood there so I ended up banging into the back of them. No awareness of their surroundings or common sense whatsoever.

Mumofnarnia · 03/04/2025 20:34

People who are the first ones having to stop at a red traffic light then get impatient and start edging their car closer and closer to the line thinking the lights are going to go green any second but they don’t. I mean what’s the fucking point, you aren’t going to make them go green sooner by edging your car further and further up to the line!!!

The “Get inside a shop and stop” people are out in force at the moment. They then look surprised that other people want to enter the shop and barge them out of the way. By people, I mean me 😂

People who seem unable to operate/function on their own; the one's that don't know it are the worst....needing to ok it with a,b,c first....relying on x,y,z before they can consider going 'fishing', etc, etc, etc.. get scared if DH/DP is 'away' and someone has knocked on the door is a favourite irk of mine.

Although, with age I have overall become a lot more mellow, it still doesn't stop me from noticing even more what a bunch of scaredy cats so many humans are.

People in queues who don’t move when the queue in front of them moves forward.

And conversely people who are so close you can feel their breath on your neck. I am a leave a gap person, it doesn't make any difference. Not talking a huge gap.

CautiousLurker01 · 03/04/2025 20:00

Agree - also dislike groups of people (usually tourists) who congregate at the top or bottom of a moving escalator on the underground as you end up being rammed into them by the commuters on the steps behind you as they can’t see them until they land on top of you.

I appreciate they are visitors, but most countries have escalators… surely it doesn’t take more than one brain cell to move far away from the escalator once you have disembarked?
