Lighthearted…
What’s been the most silly things you’ve been heavily criticised for on mumsnet?

Trying to help someone answer a question they had about starting therapy as that's my job and being accused of lying about being a therapist
The focum can be quite tiring at times 😂😂😂

God forbid you're a professional and can answer a question about your profession on here 😂

LillyPJ · 03/04/2025 12:34

I was criticized for saying that if a stranger says hello or makes small talk while waiting for a bus (for example), it's nice to reply - or even start a conversation sometimes. Apparently we should all keep ourselves to ourselves and not 'harass' people.

So many people have told me it’s easier to train a child over 2.5-3 to use the toilet rather than 1 or 2.

This is absolutely true, I'm a nanny of 19y (although as pointed out to me on a potty training thread means that I don't know what I'm talking about because I'm not a parent. Sure) and the "Magic window" of course works for some children but also does not for many! I genuinely find, unless they're desperate to be out of nappies at 2 (which has happened twice in all my many potty training!) then waiting longer makes it a much quicker and FAR less stressful process.

But don't announce that on MN or you'll be told youre shit at your job 😂

HaddyAbrams · 03/04/2025 12:32

I was told in lockdown/ covid that I was committing actual literal fraud.
I was getting the food vouchers from DCs schools as they were on FSM.

School 1 used a website where we got sent a code and could pick which shop we wanted, we then got eVouchers for that shop.

School 2 sent us Asda vouchers as that is the supermarket nearest the school. It's not the one nearest my house though and is actually 2 bus rides away. And they couldn't be used online. Obviously being covid times we weren't meant to be making journeys like that unless we had to. So I used to sell them to my mum, not for any profit, and use the money that was then in my bank to do an online shop. Apparently I deserved to be arrested and locked up.

The alternative was that the vouchers didn't get used at all, and I struggled with the increased bills.

FWIW I also hoover up spiders.

Come on now. That one is fair enough... Freezing sandwiches? You do you love but that is bonkers.

I don't actually do it. My Dad used to do it for us as kids. It was fine. Everyone fed, no-one dead mentality.

Not wanting MiL to buy 20 + presents per child at Christmas. It was ages ago though and I think more posters are in my side these days.

Apparently I'm a raging psychopath because I hoover up spiders. I'm arachnophobic so I'm not about to stop 🤷

I used to be. I started giving them names and imaginary lives- it really helped!

CaramelVanilla · 03/04/2025 08:40

Does freezing sandwiches actually work? What kind of fillings?

(Sorry for going off topic.... )

Tuna mayo works well. Cheese and ham. My Dad used to do it for us when we were young. Take them out as you leave for school, they're defrosted by lunch.

Hahaha some people are bonkers about potty training. I trained my 2 children just after they turned 3, it was easy. But some people on here will have you believe that if you don’t train by 2 you will miss the magical window and your children will never be dry!!!! They are now 10 and 7 and I’m pleased to report no lasting ill effects from my late potty training 😀

So many people have told me it’s easier to train a child over 2.5-3 to use the toilet rather than 1 or 2.

For selling something that had not only been left in a previous house by the owner, but had been sealed up in a boarded off area of the house. Apparently I should have tracked down the woman who sold the house to me and given it back to her….

Pointing out John Lennon wasn’t all that good of a person! Many years ago now.

Yes, I was bollocked for saying (many years before his untimely death) that Shane Warne was, indeed, a great spin bowler with an amazing laudable talent, but a $h1t of a human being to his wife and kids and several teammates. And I brought up his defrauding of members of the public and generous business leaders with his phoney charity foundation which was shut down because of tax fraud and his dodgy director's fees.

Apparently, one is not allowed to knock a solid drinker/smoker who is an epitome of how many Australian men would like to be.

To me, he was just a boorish tw@t with an amazing other talent.

Owlteapot · 03/04/2025 12:25

For saying blue badge holders should park over dropped kerbs, was called disablist and that they could park wherever they wanted even if it was unsafe

Can you link it please?

(edited to say please, I forgot my manners for a second there 😆)

Quitting potty training because my dd clearly wasn’t ready and was crying fearfully at the potty/toilet. I was told that I should force her the same way I should force her to brush her teeth. Last time I checked, not brushing teeth can be detrimental to her oral health whereas having a few more months in nappies is unlikely to cause any deep rooted issues.

Hahaha some people are bonkers about potty training. I trained my 2 children just after they turned 3, it was easy. I remember reading some of these threads!

Not lighthearted… and possible trigger. TW

Mumsnetters who commented on a post I made years ago about 2 close friends who hurt me (we were all pregnant at the same time but I lost my twin pregnancy) they ignored me and never checked in after my loss. I distanced myself a bit too but always checked in when possible - they never asked me. We were extremely close. All sorted now luckily.

I was told things like “get a grip” “they weren’t even full term babies” “you’re being selfish and have no idea what it’s like to be in the third trimester” - no I don’t because my twins died before I got to be.

I never spoke badly about these friends and just reached out for advice - to be told my babies didn’t matter was just not needed.

Mn is bonkers. It is all peppered with cunts who unfortunately found your thread, I'm sorry they found you when you needed support x

Some of the COVID posts were epic.

Posters being told that milk wasn’t a necessary item and they should put butter in their tea. Accusing posters who went out to buy a loaf of bread of murder.

I hid the COVID topic a couple of weeks in because it was mental, but some of it leaked through to AIBU before being moved.

Agree. COVID MN was utterly mental.

I posted about taking my bubble (admittedly there are 8 of us because we have 6 children) for a walk and how a man had aggressively screamed at us from over the road that we were breaking the law and he would call the police, then followed us home to find out where we lived, shouting about "the offenders" the entire way. And MN gave me a right load of shit, agreeing that so many people had no business being outside. When I said they are all my children, MN said I was disgusting for having so many and asked who pays for them! I was mind blown.

poetryandwine · 03/04/2025 12:09

I am so sorry about the reactions you got when looking for support concerning your children, @TaupePanda and @Pinacolada007 . That is rank cruelty.

I thought that’s why Dyson made the end of my vacuum removable, so I can get the stick into corners for the spiders?

Exactly, that's quite obviously what that attachment is for😁

Devilsmommy · 03/04/2025 12:06

sprigatito · 03/04/2025 11:29

That is pretty awful, to be fair

So is having a debilitating fear of spiders so I'm happy with how I handle it

PinkPonyClubber · 03/04/2025 12:00

Many many years ago my BF was coming for a long holiday with her new husband from abroad staying with us. She never turned up and never called (not until the time she was due to leave) or replied to any messages I left.
Obviously I was upset, DD was small and I was also upset she never met her.

I was told I shouldn’t expect my best friend of 20 years to be interested in seeing my child. (I travelled over 200 miles to see hers when he was born btw) and not everyone was interested in seeing other peoples babies.

VichyVich · 03/04/2025 11:58

Was told I would be the reason breastfeeding would become extinct because I had the audacity to stick up for someone who had difficulty breastfeeding so stuck with bottle feeds instead.

Extinct though, seriously.

JeanGenieJean · 03/04/2025 11:54

Someone asked a question about side effects of weight loss drugs. I'd just read an article about the risk of gastroparesis so I mentioned that.
I was immediately jumped on asking how dare I say this as I am not qualified to!
And
Someone else asked if I expected her to stop taking her antidepressants because they can have side effects too.

I don't know how some people's minds work.
