AIBU to find people who don’t read threads before commenting rude?

Aintnobodygottime · 02/04/2025 19:07

I don’t understand people who post on the sixth page of a thread and comment purely on the OP. It feels extremely rude. They often ask questions already answered at length, drag the conversation back from where it has naturally gone to, repeat misunderstanding, or just make a contribution that is pointless. Surely if you’re going to invest the time to post at all, you at least read the OP’s posts and the last few comments? Otherwise it comes across as just not caring and not really engaging, not to mention slightly odd to think that no one else might have made your basic point already.

It makes posting on long threads very frustrating to see the same things being said over and over.

I don't know if it's already been said (because I haven't read everything!), but sometimes there is value in sheer volume. Multiple people giving the same response may give it weight. If an OP asks a question, I think it's fair enough to just answer that, regardless of what's happened further down the thread.

We don't all use MN in the same ways or for the same reasons. Exposure to different approaches is part o the experience, and if it gets to be too much, we can always put down the phone and do something else for a while.

I already said further up i like the sound of my own voice if you actually read the whole thread you would know this

OP never wrestle with a pig or a hairy handed one. You both get muddy and the pig enjoys it,

You are not wrong, but some are intentional to get a rise. It entertains them.

TY78910 · 02/04/2025 20:28

Funnily enough @FurFangsPawsAndClaws I tend to read but not post on threads that already have 100 comments for that reason. Chances are that someone has already said what I would have, so there is just no need and it adds to a ‘pile on’. A lot of the time when a thread gets to obscene amount of comments, in the latter pages it’s just a fight between 2-3 posters anyway, which are completely separate to what the OP was about in the first place.

I’ve also seen threads that were created at the weekend and died down come back up because someone decided to reply after a few days and as it’s now back in active, new people pile on with advice to the OP where the whole thread has gone way beyond that by then! Pointless!

For starters your post is to long, I'm not reading it but I did skim it. I care about getting to say my opinion whether someone chooses to listen to it or not is their business

You have every right to give your opinion I don’t understand the point if your opinion isn’t of value and the same as many others so is adding nothing and will just be ignored. You are making it harder for people to spot a potentially good piece of advice as the more pointless posts there are means a lot of people don’t have time to scroll through them and separate worthwhile advice from where someone has commented blindly and just repeated what multiple people have posted.

There are a lot of vulnerable people who post or people who have no one else to talk to except online. There are many threads with people who really benefit from genuine support who might be in an abusive relationship, have suffered bereavement, are struggling with PPD, are seriously depressed and lonely etc.
Some of these people might really benefit from a listening ear or hearing from others in similar situations, the advice they receive might genuinely help them and help them improve their situation.

If you are happy to just add your opinion for the sake of it and skip through words someone has spent time writing to seek help and compassion or feel comfort then that seems a bit selfish, surely it’s better to just comment on a Facebook post or twitter where you can add to thousands of identical posts without interrupting a valuable conversation?

It’s your choice but I really don’t see the point!

DiscoBeat · 02/04/2025 20:21

It depends on the thread. Obviously no to asking factual questions for the 300th time but if you're being asked an opinion on something then it's sometimes better to reply without being influenced by other comments. It doesn't work if the OP is drip feeding though!

But i don't care about looking idiotic to randoms on the Internet

that's a relief

Cancelthebreak · 02/04/2025 20:15

A thread should be a conversation, not a series of monologues. That can only be achieved if people actually read at least some of the previous comments.

B1indEye · 02/04/2025 20:07

How can they do that? Un less thetre are ime machines to the future how can you include on Monday things that are going to happen on Tuesday? If you respond on Wednesday having only read the OP you make yourself look foolish, how hard is it to do a see all?

Exactly. Or the OP says ‘AIBU to have been cross with my DM?’
Lots of posts say ‘YABU’ and give reasons.
The OP says ‘OK, I’ve apologised and we’ve made up.’
People who’ve read all the OP’s posts say ‘Well done OP.’
People who could only be arsed to read the first post say ‘YABU’, give the no longer valid reasons and waste their own time by doing it.
Stupid and pointless.

I find it a bit puzzling that you care so much, its so easy to scroll past, its a bit bossy to tell others what to do

I care because it so often renders otherwise interesting threads really tedious to read. And I do find it rude - MN feels to me like a place to come if you’re interested in other people. If too many people are just set on broadcast it makes the whole place less good for the rest of us.

Having said that, it’s not actually necessary to care enormously about something to start a thread on it, is it?

Yabu I'm not reading 300 comments to say my opinion. Op can choose to scroll past my comment if they choose

I don’t read all 300 comments but most from the top and use the filter option to see all OP updates. They usually give me all I need to know.

I will however sit there and read all 300 comments if the thread is particularly spicy 🌶️

I can’t police other people’s behaviour, no. But I can dislike it and find it a bit puzzling.

Added value may be overstating it a little, I agree. But what’s the return? Why do it if it’s just typing something that is likely to either be totally repetitive at best?

Yabu. Nor everyone has time to read an entire thread, so responding to the OP is justified. It's on the OP to make sure they include the relevant info.

I just think it makes them look a bit thick - do they honestly think nobody else in 25 pages has come up with the blatantly obvious suggestion they have?

At least read all the posts from the OP, there's a bloody button for it!

Agreed. People look a bit stupid, especially after page 10!

If an opinion is said in an empty room, can it ever be said to have existed, I wonder?

OP posts:
latetothefisting · 02/04/2025 20:06

Ideal - read whole entire thread before commenting. Will likely find someone has already made the point you were going to make. Consider if you repeating it adds anything of value

Basic - read op's posts and the most recent to gauge the tone of the thread -i.e. has OP already cancelled the cheque 5 pages ago?

Bare minimum - read all the OPs posts so you know the full story before replying

Absolute bog standard shouldn't be allowed to post without- READ THE VERY FIRST OP PROPERLY don't just skim the title and make up the rest in your head

I'm not sure people are thinking "added value" when using mumsnet. As someone else said, it's not that deep and half the posts are made up/AI.

You can't police how people spend their time, you aren't the arbiter of what's an acceptable post!

I'd say rude is the wrong word, irritating perhaps.

It takes a pretty arrogant person to assume their opinion hasn't already been stated repeatedly in 300 posts.

But the objective of a thread isn’t to generate a whole spectrum of new opinions… it’s a conversation and allows the OP to gauge public opinion l.

I understand that ideally people should read and digest the thread but honestly I rarely have time to read 600 comments. Life is like that, it’s messy and sometimes you don’t have the full picture: why should Mumsnet be different?

Differentstarts · 02/04/2025 20:04

latetothefisting · 02/04/2025 20:02

So what DO you care about?
As in, why do you care so much about a random post on the Internet that you bother to reply? You must understand if you are poster 300 on a thread that it is very likely whatever you are going to say has already been said somewhere in the previous 299 responses so what's the benefit to you, or anyone else in repeating it?

It just seems insanely arrogant when people are so eager to postulate their immense wisdom that they don't even bother to read the very first OP properly, let alone OPs subsequent posts! Half the time they answer a different scenario that they've made up in their heads, ask questions the OP has already answered or even contradict what OP has said.

There's a great example running atm
OP asked whether a certain outfit was currently fashionable but noted "of course I know I can wear whatever I want."
Cue tens of posters jumping on to tell her that it doesn't matter whether it's in fashion, she should wear what she likes.
WHY? What value does that add to anyone?
A) it's bleeding obvious anyway that nobody HAS to follow trends or risk death by execution, it doesn't even need saying and isn't what OP asked
B) just to be on the safe side Op DID say it
C) even if she hadnt multiple other people have already said it ahead of you

so many posters so eager to foghorn how individual and special they are by not following trends like all the other sheep they seem to miss the irony...!

For starters your post is to long, I'm not reading it but I did skim it. I care about getting to say my opinion whether someone chooses to listen to it or not is their business

NeelyOHara1 · 02/04/2025 20:04

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2025 19:55

But who would get to decide?

Maybe a moderator or AI could chose the first post that states a commonly repeated view as a "pick"?

Differentstarts · 02/04/2025 20:02

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2025 20:01
