To be angry that my DM rents???

I'm so angry.
My DM, at 76 years old, rents her house.
She does not own her home.
This means I will never inherit anything.
Which in turn means my DC will never inherit from grandparents.
I'm so, so angry about this.
Why is life so unfair.
Why am I surrounded by people who have inherited their elderly parents houses, and by doing so have acquired mass fortunes due to what houses are selling for nowadays.
Why am I surrounded by people who are putting their inheritance into savings to give to their own DC when they grow up.
I'm so angry.
Why is life so unjust.
Why are some people so lucky and other people so unlucky.
Why are some people just handed hundreds of thousands of pounds through inheritance.
Meanwhile I'm working arse off full time. DH is working his arse off full time. We live in a tiny house cos it's all we could afford. Got no parental help with buying it. It's a state, needs loads doing to it but we can't afford to do it. Mortgage repayments are a fortune. And life is hard financially. Really hard. We're drowning. And never are we going to receive any help financially whatsoever. Never.
Why are some born into luck and others born into struggle?

Nobody has ever been promised fairness.

You aren't owed anything.

I take it you'll be working extra hard to leave your own child a substantial inheritance?

Soooo many people missing the point completely 🤣

And what's your take on the OP point aside from "waaaaaaaaah snotfair"

If course life isn't fair.

Bodonka · 01/04/2025 14:25

It’s all just a lottery. Focus on the fact that you’re able to start the process now of handing down inheritance and ‘help’ to your children and grandchildren. You’re lucky enough to own a home - despite the fact you’re paying off the mortgage/it needs work, it’s the beginnings of building generational wealth for the future.

I understand it sucks though! I’m also a first generation homeowner and although I try and focus on all the positives that brings, it’s disheartening when yet another colleague/friend goes on about the holiday their parents paid for; or help with a house deposit, or moans about inheritance tax 😂 Just one of those things. You can let the resentment build and take over you, or acknowledge the fact that although the world is inherently unfair, you’re still doing better than most, and move on.

baggieAnn · 01/04/2025 14:25

I am in exactly the same boat, a very small house that costs a fortune and needs loads doing it to, no spare cash, and both our parents rent. Majority of my friends have much more money, or large inheritances to come. But I would never think that makes life unfair?!
I have a house, I have my health and I live in a country that’s safe. Maybe you need a new outlook on life.

My grandmother sold her £800,000 home…. And it all went on care home fees so family got nothing. Inheritance should never be expected and you should let your mum live however the fuck she wants to. I’m sure she invested lots of time and money in you.

They can spend their money but you'll still inherit their actual house won't you.

Not necessarily - many houses have to be sold to fund care home fees.

Not everyone inherits though, it's weird that you don't seem to realise this.

Not if it has to be sold to fund care, not if they equity release to pay living expenses….

Btw I'd swap my inheritance in a heartbeat to have my parents still here.

Same.

ByEdgyPeer · 01/04/2025 14:22

You shouldn't be angry at others, you should be disappointed in yourself and your mother, why didn't she get a better paying or second job? Why didn't she budget more? She can't use today's prices as an excuse, she should have got into the property market 50 years ago.

I'm guessing she doesn't even have funds to get care if she eventually needs it, it'll fall to you or the local authority who are already stretched this and can only provide the basics.

You can still turn it around, stop whining about what you haven't got and start working towards what you can have.

BrieAndChilli · 01/04/2025 14:22

living in the UK you are way richer and better off than a lot of the worlds population - they will be looking at you thinking how lucky they are to be born in the UK.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/04/2025 14:20

I’ve told my parents to spend everything while they can. I would much rather they enjoyed their lives now. It’s their money. I don’t feel entitled to it at all.

Your attitude sucks, to be honest.

I never inherited anything from anyone, are you saying your parents were feckless in not buying a house? Perhaps they could never afford to, like my parents. I feel sorry for your mum in not being good enough for you.

Comedycook · 01/04/2025 14:21

The family and life you are born into is an absolute lottery.

Some people are born in war zones
Some are born in slums
Some are born to billionaire parents
Some are born to poor parents
Some are born with amazingly kind caring parents
Some are born to abusers
Some women die in childbirth so the child never has a mother
Some are abandoned straight away

There's so many scenarios...it really is just luck.

Obvnotthegolden · 01/04/2025 14:21

I am angry that I have an invisible disability but disability nevertheless and havent been able to work in a full time job for many years.

But thankfully I become self employed and me and my husband built a small business to support our family and give flexibility around my disability.

I'm so angry that it has been difficult though, and we've not yet managed to quallify for a mortgage with our lower income ls and self employed status.

I'm so angry that our dcs have both had life threatening illnesses, but thankfully we've been self employed and able to take time away from work to look after them.

I'm so angry we've not been able to put much away for our pensions but thankfully our dcs are thriving now and bring us so much joy and pride.

Fairyliz · 01/04/2025 14:18

Why do some people have life changing illnesses so they can’t work?
Why can’t some people have the children they so desperately want?
Life isn’t fair op. Count your blessings and work out how to improve things.

Flopsythebunny · 01/04/2025 14:17

It's so unfair. I grew up in local authority care after me and my siblings were removed for abuse and neglect. I'll never inherit, I've had to work for everything I've got.
Get over yourself!!!

DoBetter3590 · 01/04/2025 14:15

One of life's victims are you?

My parents own, Infact right now they have 2 properties!! I won't get anything from them I expect and that's fine. Why plan for any inheritance when it can be eaten up by care home fees or taxes or god knows what else.

IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear · 01/04/2025 14:14

If you like you can have my inheritance. There’s no money to speak of as far as I know, but you can have the dementia I’ll like inherit and the long history of mental illness in my family. Have at it and enjoy.

Truetoself · 01/04/2025 14:14

Do YOU own your own home and have a well paying job and have made plans for youe children’s future?

catndogslife · 01/04/2025 14:14

The one advantage of renting after retirement is that when you need care, your home does not have to be sold to pay for it.
I don't know who your "friends" are, but I know of several people whose inheritance was swallowed up by long term residential care costs.
