To be angry that my DM rents???

Ohioatdawn · 01/04/2025 14:07

I'm so angry.
My DM, at 76 years old, rents her house.
She does not own her home.
This means I will never inherit anything.
Which in turn means my DC will never inherit from grandparents.
I'm so, so angry about this.
Why is life so unfair.
Why am I surrounded by people who have inherited their elderly parents houses, and by doing so have acquired mass fortunes due to what houses are selling for nowadays.
Why am I surrounded by people who are putting their inheritance into savings to give to their own DC when they grow up.
I'm so angry.
Why is life so unjust.
Why are some people so lucky and other people so unlucky.
Why are some people just handed hundreds of thousands of pounds through inheritance.
Meanwhile I'm working arse off full time. DH is working his arse off full time. We live in a tiny house cos it's all we could afford. Got no parental help with buying it. It's a state, needs loads doing to it but we can't afford to do it. Mortgage repayments are a fortune. And life is hard financially. Really hard. We're drowning. And never are we going to receive any help financially whatsoever. Never.
Why are some born into luck and others born into struggle?

You don’t own a house and still got DC? How unfair to them and their future children! They must be so angry with you.

WindyRoses · 01/04/2025 14:29

Maybe not. Maybe some parents want to leave all their money or their house to the local donkey sanctuary. Stop being a whingy little brat

Donkey Sanctuaries and other animal charities, especially small local ones would be very grateful.
DD works for one.

MissDoubleU · 01/04/2025 14:33

No one is owed inheritance. Many, many people live their whole lives never having inherit a penny and we do quite fine and have long happy lives. Some people do everything to give their children a sizable inheritance but then every penny has to go towards their care costs in their last years.

I imagine your DM isn’t renting purely to spite you and prevent you from getting what she’s earned through her life. You can be upset all you like that life is unfair but directing your anger at one person is ridiculous.

Remove the chip from your shoulder. YABVVU.

Yes life is unfair

yes inheritance should be taxed a lot more to make society more equitable

But why? My parents own their house. They both worked really hard for it.

where do you draw the line? Should I be taxed if I give my dd £50??

So sorry for you.
I will cry you a river.

MagentaRocks · 01/04/2025 14:32

I will inherit from my parents, me and my brother will probably get £130-150k each based on today’s house prices. My parents don’t want to spend that money on care fees etc as they have worked hard for what they had, we grew up poor, free school meals etc but both of us will willingly pay for their care and use their assets to do so if needed. I hope we do inherit as that it what they want but their well being comes first.

Blarn · 01/04/2025 14:32

I didn't inherit when my grandfather died as he was an ex police officer so still rented his house from police housing stock. When he died it was sold as the police no longer have houses to rent out. My maternal grandparents had a council house too which they managed to buy. Being angry that there is hardly any social housing left is more sensible than being angry that you were not born into a wealthy family.

Dh and I are 40 and we are still a couple of years away from saving up for a deposit. I'm not angry, it's just life unfortunately.

Everydayimhuffling · 01/04/2025 14:31

It is unfair. Inheritance taxes should be much higher and with fewer loopholes. It's making our society more unequal and less of a meritocracy, which is harmful.

Not your mum's fault though, and you shouldn't have an unfair advantage either.

BorrowersAreVermin · 01/04/2025 14:31

Life is unfair but we have to try and make what we can of it.

I'm not angry DM had nothing to leave us. If anything I was more saddened she had to live a life that meant she could barely provide for herself.

IamSmarticus · 01/04/2025 14:31

Wow - I am so glad that you are no child of mine!

Soooo many people missing the point completely 🤣

Is it the op pulling a reversal on us? 😄😄

JLou08 · 01/04/2025 14:29

Really worries me that there are people that think like this. Are you not more concerned with your parents having a good quality lengthy life than what you could get from them when they die. I feel sad at the thought of my parents passing away, I couldn't care less about an inheritance from them.

WindyRoses · 01/04/2025 14:29

Ohioatdawn · 01/04/2025 14:22

They can spend their money but you'll still inherit their actual house won't you.

Maybe not. Maybe some parents want to leave all their money or their house to the local donkey sanctuary. Stop being a whingy little brat

JHound · 01/04/2025 14:29

I only got a grand from my grandparents (specifically, my grandmother) and was fine with that. My life is my responsibility and I am from a poor background. Get over it and stop sounding so entitled / childish. Most people I know with homes did not inherit the money for their deposits

MaggieBsBoat · 01/04/2025 14:28

So basically you’re pissed at your mother that she never bought/was able to buy a house when she was younger. That’s on her. No one else. Some people prioritised this in the 80s when she perhaps should have (given her age). She didn’t. And if she didn’t have the career to earn enough money then that is also on her and her family. At a certain point we have to take responsibility for our life choices.
Your kids will inherit from you.
Well done.
your post sounds very odd.
Some people are lucky. But it doesn’t sound like your mother was unlucky. Without evidence to the contrary she is in rented accommodation through choice. Take it up with her. Sour grapes of this level are nuts (raisins?).

Iloveeverycat · 01/04/2025 14:28

My mums house was sold to pay for her care home fees of £1950. a week is that fair. Your mum won't have to pay a penny.

HundredPercentUnsure · 01/04/2025 14:28

dogcatkitten · 01/04/2025 14:22

I never inherited anything from anyone, are you saying your parents were feckless in not buying a house? Perhaps they could never afford to, like my parents. I feel sorry for your mum in not being good enough for you.

I feel sorry for your mum in not being good enough for you.

That was my first thought too. So sad how some people treat their families.

Guineapiglet2 · 01/04/2025 14:28

Get over yourself.

I imagine if your mum did own her home you'd just be sat there waiting for her to die for her money would you?

TheRoundTable1983 · 01/04/2025 14:27

You are overlooking the fact that even if your mother did own her home, there's absolutely nothing to say that she wouldn't need to sell it to fund care in her last years anyway. Inheritance is never guaranteed and certainly shouldn't be expected or relied upon. Do your best to achieve the life you want for yourself and stop being concerned with what others have.

Mauro711 · 01/04/2025 14:27

@Ohioatdawn Why are you singling out your mother? Between you and your DH, arent't there 4 parents to be angry with or is it just your mother who should be obliged to give you money?

Lentilweaver · 01/04/2025 14:27

I suppose the point is rising house prices but omg such a whiny post.

Not necessarily. My parents home is being sold to cover their retirement, they will live in their smaller second home. My parents are young ish, they haven't inherited ANYTHING from their parents who are all dead now, the smaller second home isn't work much and like I've said before and others have said- may be needed for care etc, so even when you look at circumstance like "Oh their parents own/have more than one property" that doesn't mean it's coming to the kids!!!

JHound · 01/04/2025 14:26

Give your head a wobble.

How do you know the living situation of @FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee ’s parents?

they could be renters also, but at least that poster isn’t a grabby cow.
