Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

Yes one would expect the PM to mention Easter. Not the Easter Bunny, no.

Look. If he's going to use X then he must be inclusive and consistent that is all.

He will mention Easter. It hasn’t happened yet this year though. Eid has.

LittleGlowingOblong · 31/03/2025 09:29

Isn’t Lent on a level with Ramadan, though? If he tweeted about one he should tweet about the other. Mother’s Day has its origins in Lent.

He didn’t tweet about Ramadan. He tweeted about Eid. OP was mistaken about this (as well). He will tweet about Easter, which is the end of the period of fasting. Not that many people do any kind of Lent fast these days.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/03/2025 12:59

If he'd posted about Mothers' Day on X I wouldn't have seen it because I wouldn't touch X with a barge pole. Not that I care that much whether he mentioned it or not. I saw it on Instagram, thought 'that's nice' and moved on.

Janiie · 31/03/2025 12:55

GCAcademic · 31/03/2025 12:44

So you think that he should have acknowledged Eid on Instagram, then? To be "consistent", and "inclusive"?

He should've mentioned both on both platforms, obviously.

Either do social media responsibly and with equality, which as pm is pretty obvious, or don't bother.

I think it’s a disgrace, but he seems to be deliberately causing division.

wtf?? Or are you joking? I can’t tell.

What the hell does the prime minister have to do with Mothers Day?

It’s Mothers Day. Celebrate with your mother, or your children. Do whatever you want.

And I’m sure Keir Starmer will do likewise.

This place baffles me sometimes.

I was really shocked yesterday to see on all the big pages, including Lloyds bank Marks & Spencer‘s Tesco et cetera even on the royal family page if they mentioned Eid there was a ton of comments underneath saying what about Mother’s Day but yet all of them had mentioned Mother’s Day hours earlier.

it was literally like a ln aggressive coordinated attack across the Internet yesterday very weird.

Edited

The people I've seen doing this are the same ones who get outraged by the fact that there's an International Women's Day. Go figure.

To answer the question (and sorry to single anyone out) this is the post that refs trying to wind up X users. Did not come from me!

I read this as ‘winding up’ as in closing down, given the reason stated. I don’t think any government departments or public bodies should be on there anymore to be honest.

Im not 'very upset' about this.

Why must women who have different views be very upset, professionally offended, fummin or hating.

I'm a woman with a view.

KS and his comms team should do better. I won't hold my breath.

Ok, you're not very upset. I take that back.
However, you did think it was an issue that Keir Starmer had posted about Eid on X but not mothers day, because you want him to be consistent.
So I can assume you feel it's also an issue that he poster about mothers day on Instagram but not Eid. It's exactly the same inconsistency.

Let's unpack why we think a commercial holiday telling us that we deserve a lie in once a year for carrying the mental load all year round is an important, women affirming holiday. At its best, it's a day for individuals to celebrate their mother/mother figures and an excuse to have family time. From a religious perspective, it's a break from the boredom of lent food and a time to reconnect with your roots. At it's worst, it's misogynistic and reinforces stereotypes about the role of mothers and our desire for flowers. Mostly, it's just an excuse to sell things.

Nonsense. My husband and I both do a lot all year round for our kids because that's our job, but it doesn't mean that it's not nice to have a bit of recognition for that. It's not hard to make a little bit of effort once a year to say "Hey, I notice everything you do for our family and I appreciate it." That doesn't mean that my daughter, stepdaughter and husband don't also say thank you on other days of the year, or that I don't thank them. It doesn't have to be commercial at all.

I’ve heard he never puts down the next customer bar on the conveyor belt when he does the weekly shop …

This just does it for me. Heinous. There are no words.

Don't he silly. No different to wishing somone happy Christmas or happy new year. Do you lose respect for him for that too? Like I said, I don't like him anyway so wouldn't be bothered if he said it or not, but clearly others are bothered.

I just don't think we need a load of trite platitudes like "hope all mums are being spoilt" from politicians on what is basically now a commercial day. He's not a religious leader so he doesn't need to pontificate on lent. It's simple politeness to acknowledge a major religious holiday on an official twitter account. Although it wouldn't bother me at all if he didn't acknowledge Eid or Easter or Diwali. He's not the head of state.
A personal tribute on his personal IG is lovely it that's what he wants to do.

Dunno mate... I'm more upset about him ignoring and aiding genocides but 🤷🏼‍♀️

Here we go. If you're upset, go on the very quiet Gaza threads. This one isn't for that particular subject.

Livelovebehappy · 31/03/2025 12:38

Negroany · 31/03/2025 00:54

So you think he should be saying "happy busy day for businesses" then?

I don't need the PM to "reflect" on my dead mum. I'd rather he spent time with his own family when away from work and focusing on work when he's there.

Give over. He says Happy Christmas. Does that rattle your cage too? If he says it, you dont have to take it on board. Like him saying Happy Eid. I dont care because its not relevant to me, but its relevant to others, so if he says it, thats fine too. Not everything is about you. You do you...

I wish politician stayed off social media

it’s creates too many issues (Trump) and too many are riled up by non issues such as this nonsense

Might be no bad thing.

I'd lose all respect for him if he tweeted "hope all mothers are being spoilt by their loved ones". He's the PM not a PR rep for a chain of pubs.

YANBU He's a disgrace. Today is International Potato Day and he's posted nothing. Furthermore I bet he's having chips for tea. The potato murdering bastard.

ThatMrsM · 31/03/2025 12:25

The Labour party posted about Mothers Day on X, Instagram and Facebook. I hadn't even considered that Keir Stamer would or wouldn't post about it until seeing this thread.
