Nothing for Mother's Day

Rina1971 · 30/03/2025 18:19

My 18 year old daughter excelled herself today. She stayed out to 4am, got up at 8am shouted Happy Mother's Day and that was it. I feel devastated and hurt. She knew when Mother's Day was, we reminded her and she confirmed to DP she had it sorted. Now she is acting all wounded as though me wanting some acknowledgement is a major inconvenience to her.

Mothering Sunday is about honouring mother churches, not mothers.

Even centuries ago it was about going home to visit your mother.

It's rude and disrespectful. It's not abut spending money it's about making someone feel appreciated but you don't want it to be dutiful you want it to be heartfelt.

Shouting happy mothers day would irritate me more than it not being said at all.

As petty as iti might sound I would have to retaliate in some way. Eg birthday give her the same treatment.

This. ^

Sorry you got nothing @Rina1971 Mine went through a period of not being arsed with bothering with DH and me when it came to Mothers Day and Fathers Day - even forgot a couple of birthdays - when they were between 17 and 20. Was whilst at Uni. Grew up a bit though, and realised it was hurtful to be forgotten. Broke my heart when they didn't bother, as my own mother died some years before, so Mothers Day was empty, as I had no mother to buy for and nothing from my DC. It only happened a couple of times, and they've been great since. Smile

I'm sure yours will improve in a few years OP. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to you....... Flowers

I hope my mum isn't expecting anything. I am not on board with all these silly 'days' and it is really unfair to push expectations to buy shite every other month for the next hallmark sponsored day onto your kids

My 17 year old DS’s response to asking if he has anything to say to me today was in
line with this…..He said I’d die for you any day, today is no different!
It’s possibly the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me 😂😂

Rina1971 · 30/03/2025 19:07

I agree I don't want hallmark or tat. Making a cake or lunch would have been nice. Instead I have been on-call for hangover remedies. It would just be nice to be acknowledged

In the nicest way possible, why on earth are you on call for hangover remedies?! Self-inflicted, self-heal and that is just normal. You need to stop that for a start and she needs to grow up and show some appreciation.

huuskymam · 30/03/2025 20:47

My 21 year old bought me a hair dryer. He just so happened to have broken mine and needed to replace it. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone was the way he put it 😂😂

See - i get what folks are saying when they say that it's a made up thing ... but ... it is quite a big main stream 'made up thing'.

It's a thing which has been going for years now and is a thing which, unless you all agree that the made upness of it makes it NOT a thing in your family is unusual to ignore.

I mean i like it. Made up thing or rooted in history thing, i like giving my mum a card and a hug on mother's day just to say thanks.

The problems start when one person's expectations (reasonable ones based on what's been done in previous years perhaps) aren't met. And with no prior discussion.

Flowers and happy mother's day x

If you’ve taken her hangover remedies then more fool you! If she’s old enough to stay out til early hours then she’s old enough to get up and get some tablets, drink etc. If she was genuinely unwell I can understand running after her but not something that’s self inflicted.

Moier · 30/03/2025 20:21

I simply can't understand it.. if my 19 year old ASD Grandson ( who goes to local Uni part time and works at McDonald's part time) can go to the shops and buy his mum a card and flowers and chocolates and me a card and fluffy socks and hand cream...then surely your kids at a certain age can do the same .
I've had my daughters visit with cards and presents ( not spent a lot) .. buy they are so thoughtful and I'm blessed we are a close and caring family.
I even rang my neice to see how she was.. being first Mother's day without her Mum( my sister).. a little time and effort.. to be brought up with a kind and caring attitude is all it takes.

Whenwillyoumakemyphonering · 30/03/2025 20:18

My twins, now 26 forgot also. It doesn't matter I'm mam every day. They're not at home.
The real reason for Mothers day, was.to visit your mother church. Guess Hallmark traded in.
Sorry you feel sad, but they have 365 days to show your there Mam
Let it go, it's not important Just another "card" holiday

Do the same on her birthday

Yes, this!!

Mothering Sunday has been a thing since long before hallmark existed

Goldiefrocks · 30/03/2025 20:08

There’s no point being sad about it if you don’t say anything to your kids. For those who have been let down, now is the time to tell them.

Why bother?

PeloMom · 30/03/2025 20:00

If she’s old enough to get this pissed she is for sure old enough and capable to take care of her own hangover? In the meantime take yourself out on a nice walk, get some coffee or whatever makes you happy

Downwiththecrumpets81 · 30/03/2025 19:07

My 14 year old said Happy Mother’s Day. My 20 year old hasn’t even done that. And that’s my lot. I gave up caring about it years ago though, I’m a single parent so never had anything for Mother’s Day.

Why havnt you ever bought anything for yourself from them?

I'm a single mum and every year me and my DC ( 8 & 10 ) go shopping and get some bits I like, socks, chocolates ect, nothing major but they love doing it. DD can't wait until she can go by herself with her own money

Definitelymaybenoyes · 30/03/2025 19:52

Hand hold here, OP 🌺

Whilst potentially not "devastating", it still must be upsetting to receive nothing but a "Happy Mother's Day" shouted down the stairs. It doesn't take much to acknowledge how much the average mum does in the form of a card, or at a stretch some flowers (with the presumption that you're a cracking mum, as most are).

I'm surprised at other's comments and would label them as a little insensitive. Sadly, it's becoming more apparent that society increasingly cower to today's young people and expect the bare minimum from them, frequently letting them off the hook and allowing them to adopt a disregard for others feelings.

Sorry OP. Happy Mother's Day - she cares deep down I promise.

user1497787065 · 30/03/2025 19:41

Grow up. If she treats you like this all the time there may be a problem however one Sunday in 52 don’t overthink it.

Cucy · 30/03/2025 19:39

I tell my DC I don’t want anything for Mother’s Day.

I don’t understand the drama around it.

I would much rather be appreciated year round, rather than have something because society says you should.

There’s way too much pressure on having a perfect Mother’s Day (hence all of the Mother’s Day disappointment threads).

BallerinaRadio · 30/03/2025 19:38

'Devastated'?

Really?

You feel special occasions are silly? How interesting. Are you a Puritan from the 1600s maybe? I recently learned that they didn't celebrate Christmas or birthdays either....

Regardless of where you beliefs derive from, surely you accept it's fair enough that the vast majority of people, whatever their culture, DO celebrate some forms of special occasion (though which exact ones varies globally, of course).

So it's not beyond the realms of credibility that OP might be among this vast majority of people?

hollyivy123 · 30/03/2025 19:18

Same old shit here too, my son remembered but then forgot and left the card at his dad's house 1.5 hours drive away. I guess I have to forgive him. He's spent most of the day having lunch with his step-mum, whilst i'm the one who does all of the work and stress for the other 364 days of the year. He's come home and is now studying in the office so I guess mother's day is kinda cancelled. Wish mother's day didn't exist, then there wouldn't be the disappointment. Reading some of the threads on here about how partners and husbands didn't do anything is equally depressing. I'm pleased to be single, then I wouldn't have the double disappointment.

beetface · 30/03/2025 19:18

Not a word here. A card and a £3 bunch of tulips would have been nice. Happy Mother’s Day @Rina1971 and everyone.

Rina1971 · 30/03/2025 19:14

Sadly not transporting daughter to 5am swim training. Just part of the job !
