Separated 13 years, no contact since children came of age, separated as a result of dv. I was informed today that he is getting Married next week .
Should i inform someone in authority?
Aibu if i report him, i was delighted when he moved on so not upset he is getting married, but im astounded because we are not divorced!

My understanding is that register office officials routinely carry out checks before marrying people - something might be flagged there. I don't know if it is the same in a Church setting. Odd that it all seems to be going ahead right now.

DecafDodger · 30/03/2025 16:25

I would think also some kind of non-official ceremony and not marriage. But guess your kids will report back.

He is getting married next week and i have had no divorce papers, im informed that you have to notify authorities 3 months in advance, so that doesnt add up.
Unless it is a non legal promise type of thing, yeah i feel sorry for the lady in question , because we are 100 % still married.

So you turn up to the wedding with the kids, then when they ask the bit about "does anyone have any reason that Twat & new wife to be cannot get married, please speak now", you stand up and say yes, we are already married! Don't forget to film it and claim your £250 on you've been framed.

Or you just reply to his request about the kids attending saying that as he is already married, then you're a little confused about how he can be getting married again.

Was your first marriage a legal one? e.g. not a sharia law thing? Is this marriage actually a legal one? e.g. not just a blessing.

Your other option is to contact the registry office/church doing the marriage and point out that he is already married. There should be banns (church) or some sort of legal notice that has gone out at least 29 days before the ceremony in the registry office.

Yes it’s not a “oops, sorry I forgot the form” type of crime, it’s a big deal.

Can I ask why you haven’t divorced?

Piffle11 · 30/03/2025 16:17

Assuming that you are both British nationals and were married in the UK…
Going by my own experience, I had to provide my decree absolute from my first marriage when booking the registrar for my second marriage.

I presume people who knowingly commit bigamy simply claim that they have never been married. If your husband has admitted to a registrar that he has been previously married, then they will ask for his degree absolute, so he cannot be of the opinion that he has been ‘automatically’ divorced due to length of separation.

Please tell me you have a valid will in place…

Agreed. If you die now, he will get everything up to a certain threshold (£250k IIRC). Anything left after that goes to your kids.

mothersdayhmm · 30/03/2025 16:14

If you know where he is getting married, I would inform the venue / the person who will be marrying them.

DecafDodger · 30/03/2025 16:13

maybe he also assumes like a poster here that divorces happen automatically?

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 30/03/2025 16:13

I would have to find out more info first.

Is it true or just something you heard?
Is it a legal marriage or just a religious or ceremonial non-legal ceremony?
Is he going to a country where bigamy is legal? Kenya or Senegal for example?

Obviously you do nothing until after The Big Day. He hasn't committed a crime yet.
Then report and enjoy.....

My thoughts exactly!

You could go to the wedding and when they asks if anyone objects you could stand up and say 'me!' EastEnders style lol 😄

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 30/03/2025 16:09

How come you guys never divorced?

ginnitonic · 30/03/2025 16:06

If you are in the UK you should ring 101 and report it to the police. You can get 7 years in prison for bigamy.

I thought after a period of time of no contact it means you’re divorced (I’m wrong)

Edited

It still has to be formalised

If he couldnt be bothered to file for divorce why didnt you file for it.

annabianca · 30/03/2025 16:02

Why haven't you divorced yet? It has lots of legal implications and complications.

BinChicken1 · 30/03/2025 16:02

…did his children not say “hey, dad, aren’t you still married to mum?” and if so, did he not give them any explanation?
