I get a bag from my child. Who then asks to share them. No. Absolutely no. AIBU for a bit more thought? I don't like that I'm expected to share, they've gone off in a huff and my OH is also in a huff.

I just reminded of my friend who one mothers' day was woken by her very excited 4 and 6yo at 5am by a cheese straw sandwich that they were very proud to give her, having made it themselves so she could have breakfast in bed.

She told them how much she loved it - and said thankfully they were so keen to check it tasted okay that they didn't realise she ate almost none of it. They were still bubbling over with the delight of what they'd done for her a couple of days later.

That's what mothers' day is about.

It's not the child's day. It's Mother's day.

Being a mother by default involves a child. You can't be one without the other. You don't get excused from being a mother on mothers' day either. And mothers spending it moaning about the gift from your child and refusing to share it with said child IS pretty ironic, and sad.

Themanuscript · 30/03/2025 14:48

a mother being given a gift which she is then automatically expected to share with her child regardless of what it is is so typical and exactly why I won’t have kids

BatchCookBabe · 30/03/2025 14:47

One of my DC bought me a pack of chocolate cookies in the bunch of gifts they bought me for Mothers Day (when they visited me today.) 12 there was.

Have a guess what I did with them @ChicMiss Go on guess.

Okay okay.... Multiple choice answers...

A) I clutched the pack of 12 cookies to my chest, and flounced out of the room to hide them under the bed, because like fuck are any of my kids getting any of them - OR my DH.

B) After DH had made 4 coffees for him, me, and our 2 DC, I opened the pack and gave us all 3 each to have with our coffee. (Then threw the packaging away.)

What do you think I did @ChicMiss ??? Wink

Wow! I’d have loved mini eggs for Mother’s Day. We’re not made of money though so DH would have been told off (we agreed no presents).

How old is your DC? I’d have shared without a second thought.

Not even a pack of mini eggs or a Terry Chocolate Orange or anything?! Shock

Make sure your DH gets no bloody Fathers Day presents!

Rachaelsyndrome · 30/03/2025 14:44

I would have liked kids. Them giving me Mini Eggs, then snaffling half! I'm not pissed off, life is what it is, but to show you some perspective.

It's your partner who's at fault here, not the child. Get a grip

What has her partner done?

100percenthagitude · 30/03/2025 14:29

Oh my god, you're serious, aren't you?

I can see the petulant, pouty lip from here and it's not on your six year old....

😂

6 years old. I'm just miffed that it's a gift I have to share. Yes it's mother's day but I'm having to share my gift. It would be nice to receive something that is just mine.

Daisy12Maisie · 30/03/2025 14:18

I think mini eggs are fine and I would be happy to share them but only with a slightly older child as they are a choking hazard. If it’s a 2 year old then I would be a bit annoyed at the husband for getting something that wasn’t safe for the child to share.

Reading most of these replies I now understand why there are so many entitled kids. The mini eggs were a present. A present. Not something for the family to share on a Saturday night. It's not like it was a big tin of Roses where there are plenty to share. A bag of mini eggs takes about 5 minutes to eat, you enjoy them OP for all you do for your child. Do these children take presents to parties and expect the recipient to give them straight back because they are something the giver would like?

It's a bag of mini eggs. A bag of mini eggs. If the OP wants to "enjoy" a bag of mini eggs, she can buy 10 next time she goes near any shop, keep them in a cupboard and take one out whenever she feels like, not giving any to anyone else. That's the difference between being an adult and a child.

Then she will be able to share presents that six year olds give her with the said six year old, without having to be driven by her desperate desire for cheap, commonly available chocolate.

Theunamedcat · 30/03/2025 14:15

My 12 year old asked me if he could have my chocolate I said I would share WHEN I opened it but that it was rude to ask (he is sen and emotionally he is younger than 12) he was fine with this no sulking no drama

Eldermilleniallyogii · 30/03/2025 14:06

They are 6!

Holy crap, OP. Your DC is 6?!?!?! Share the bloody mini eggs! You've just trashed what could have been a lovely mum/child sharing experience.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 30/03/2025 14:00

YABU for having chocolate in the house and not expecting a 6 year old to want some. I bet whilst they were buying it they were eagerly anticipating sharing it with you.

I share mine with DS and DH and they're way older than 6, even if they don't always act like it <glares>

Daftypants · 30/03/2025 14:00

I got some things for Mother’s Day about lunchtime 😂 what with losing the hour and the only “ child “ that still lives with me is 28 .
one of the items were nice chocolates and I always share , have given husband and daughter 2 each so far

AngelaMerkin1 · 30/03/2025 13:59

Better send your DC a link to the Stately Homes thread OP, they’ll need it in the future.

TheThreeMiracles · 30/03/2025 13:58

You wouldn’t have a Mother’s Day if it wasn’t for your children ! Some can’t have children and are spending the day heart broken and your crying over mini eggs grow up !

NoTouch · 30/03/2025 13:41

Nichebitch · 30/03/2025 13:19

The posters shocked by you not wanting to share are missing the point. You got a thoughtless gift because your dh couldn’t be bothered so just let the kid pick whatever they wanted to eat, and it’s close to Easter so there you go. You deserve better, and yes a 6 year old should learn that today is your day. I would usually share but I think is more than fair that you’re making a point

Not agreeing with your "point" doesn't mean we are "missing" it. OP wants a faux mothers day laid on by her dh.

I never expect dh to "be bothered" by mothers day. I am not his mother. I don't expect him to arrange anything, if I want to do something on mothers day (within reason as we would both obviously go our separate ways to spend time with our own mothers) I do it and he will support it.

I never gave my mum anything beyond the school made mothers day card as a child. She would usually be spending the day with her own mum, which modelled generosity and giving to us. It made the first mothers days with her when we were adults more special. I did the same with my own dc.

These posts every year are just another example of the "me me me" generation.

CockSpadget · 30/03/2025 13:38

I’d not begrudge any 6yo some of my mini eggs, let alone my own child.

Isobel201 · 30/03/2025 13:37

This is why I gave my mum liquorice allsorts, I don't like them, so I won't be sharing them lol!

Mightymoog · 30/03/2025 13:31

DoraSpenlow · 30/03/2025 13:28

It's not the child's day. It's Mother's day.

Today we're having a really nice michelin star curry at home.

The kids, my husband and my mum were all looking forward to it but I'll take your advice and tell the kids and the husband they're not haing any. After all, it's mothers day, not kids and husbands get a nice meal too day.

Iammatrix · 30/03/2025 13:31

As my 6 DGS says ‘sharing is caring’ x

It's adults like you that teach children to be entitled a six year old child bought their mother some mini eggs and asked for one, a bloody six year old child!!!! Not a 20 year old a six year old............ Entitled is being greedy, not sharing, being ungrateful now read this.and think about the word entitled.
