To be creeped out by people who make a huge deal out of celebrity deaths?

I don’t mean the normal “Oh, that’s sad” reaction when a famous person dies - I mean the people who act like they’ve lost a close family member. The ones who post long, emotional tributes, talk about how “devastated” they are and make the whole thing about them.

It just feels… off. Like they’re using someone else’s deaths to fill a gap in their own lives, feeding off the drama in a way that seems performative. I get feeling sad about someone whose work you admired but the extreme reactions just feel weird and attention-seeking.

AIBU to think this is creepy?

Im with you on this OP

Some people take a strange interest in dead celebs. It’s like they want to attach themselves to any grievance available

The days after Diana died - many people acted OTT. Thank goodness SM didn’t exist then!

I was 16 at the time and felt ‘pressured’ grieve for her when couldn’t care less about her.

Some have gone to realise this themselves.

Heyhelga · 31/12/2025 13:43

If they go into meltdown over pretty much every celebrity death yeah that's odd, but most people have one idol who passes away and it's a sad moment.

I had to unfollow a 40 something year old who started off as a home decor insta account who now turned into a full on influencer ( who is full of shit.) Never once mentioned poor Liam Payne as one of her many obsessions before he died - now - she’s constantly on the grief train for him - grow up Jen.

notcomfortable · 31/12/2025 07:30

I also felt like you until Matthew Perry passed away
I grew up watching friends, literally watching it before I was even old enough to understand what was being said, friends was the backing track to my life, it was there after school and before I'd fall asleep.
His death really hit hard, my first ever tattoo is dedicated to Matthew Perry
And people have stopped me to talk about it which is quite nice
Live and let live I say

I was a long term fan of an actor from the 1960s/1970s who died at 80 after a lifetime of chain smoking and with a history of alcohol abuse. I had to leave the fan group because of all the “taken too soon” “my heart is broken” posts…..

Back in the late 60's tve Stones were often in pubs in the King's Rd. We first met the singer, Marianne Faithful there - oddly enough her song As tears go by wasxplayed on the News Channel tonight. She said that the publication of her and Mick Jagger and a certain Mars bar incident affected her life. The journalist who published it was a schoolfriend of my husband and we knew about it befire it was published. Ironically we saw her in a cafe in the King's Rd just before her death and she seemed on top form then so maybe she had got in top of her addiction. Not only did she have a lovely voice but she was very beautiful and yes I was sad. It reminded me tgat while for many of us the 60's were great there had been downsides as well. The other death that was sad was that of the actor Jeremy Brett who died suddenly. When Im 'next in London I will go to the bench dedicated to him just outside his flat with a mini bottle of champagne. He could be terribly amusing and he loved to tease.

One of the newspapers headlines today is about want to reopen the Jill Dando case. As you may have forgotten that Barry George was acquitted of her murder. Still unsolved 26 years later.

Her murder was shocking. More so when she was on the cover for that week’s Radio Times.

Yes, that was incredibly sad. By all accounts, she was a lovely woman who had a lot to live for.

@CurlewKate @scalt i remember feeling VERY miffed that her funeral was on my 11th birthday!

My dd feels a vague sense of annoyance every time someone mentions Princess Diana-she had a massive tantrum because The Tellytubbies wasn’t on that morning and it’s still somewhere there in her subconscious…

Love this. My dad was annoyed because he missed his Sunday morning lie-in: he was church organist, and he was woken up because all the music had to be changed at the last moment to something more sombre. And yes, I was annoyed by the mentionits of Diana, and TV schedules messed up. As a matter of principle, I refused to watch the funeral, and thought “all that plastic waste (of flower packaging)”.

Magdalen Berns was so young when she died, that always feels brutal.

ConnieHeart · 25/04/2025 08:30

KimberleyClark · 01/04/2025 09:37

James Dean, Eddie Cochran…..

More tragic with Diana really in that the car was trying to get away from the press

CurlewKate · 25/04/2025 08:21

@LovelysummerdaysI’ve been wondering what Magdalen Berns would be saying if she was alive today.

Lovelysummerdays · 25/04/2025 07:28

I do agree, sort of, in general I just have a that’s sad moment when people die. That said there is the odd one which tugs at your heart strings.

There was a YouTuber Magdalen Berns whose views made so much sense to me. I felt real and genuine sadness when she died, even now years later there’s a little pang of sadness.

AgnesX · 25/04/2025 07:25

I think the only famous person whose death really touched me was the queen because it represented the end of an era. She was queen when I was born and so a staple of public life for my entire life.

I say touched as in a pang. No tears or weeping though. The whole Diana thing was ridiculous.

HeadNorth · 25/04/2025 07:19

The response to the queen's death was crazy. I work in central Edinburgh but fortunately can work from home as there were huge queus of people wanting to basically look at a wooden box - before it headed to London where even greater madness ensued. Arguments about queue jumping, people bringing their kids. I just don't get it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/04/2025 21:41

I find it a bit off too. I’d never expect to change my every day life because a famous person had died.

Sometimes I do feel a bit sad when it’s a famous person I quite admired and then I think “oh I’ll never get to meet them”. If someone is murdered it’s obviously quite upsetting, whether famous or not.

I guess when a world leader or similar dies and you think their death will make a difference for the worse that’s more of a reason to get upset. But that’s quite rare!

I agree with you really, but the reality is I cried buckets for well over a week when Prince died. I couldn’t even watch him or listen to him for months or I started crying.
DH knew how much I loved Prince and was lovely, except after a few weeks I think he was abit 🤨
My DB had got me into Prince around ‘82. DB had died in 2012 and I think looking back that had a lot to do with how upset I was.

Spidey66 · 23/04/2025 23:29

There were a few I felt very sad and upset about-Amy Winehouse as she was young and talented and there was hope she’d conquer her demons-Peaches Geldof, again her young age, she had small children and it was a chilling echo to her mother’s death, George Michael because he was a similar age to me and it was like I’d grown up with him, and Steve Mackay because I love Pulp!

A few I was sad about as I was a fan…Shane McGowan (though expected for years!) , Bowie, Prince, Robin Williams

others, if they were very old, I just thought ‘oh that’s sad’ but people die, it happens!

never cried over a celebrity or not gone to work because of it!
