To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

I added a few things extra a week to prepare for Brexit against massive rises in food price. Carried this on since. Bought water purification tablets, a gas camping stove (which I’ve used during power cuts), rechargeable lanterns, phone power packs (including a solar charge one), a flint and a wind up radio. Keep 2 litre water bottles in the garage too (which I’ve also used when the water was cut off).

If the electricity went off for 3 days you'd have to eat the contents of the fridge and freezer first. We would have some, er, interesting meals after a while.

Note to self: must get more gas canisters for the camping stove.

If the electricity goes of for three days, I'm screwed because I have an induction hob, a microwave, two electric ovens and an air fryer!!

Note to self - must buy a camping stove...

When there is a total collapse in society and anarchy reigns, how do you intend to defend your food stockpiles from raiders? Those generators are great but if you have lights on after dark, wooosh you become a target for the desperate roaming boards looking for a takeaway.

Do you have a defensive plan? Ideally you need to decamp a number of households to the most defensible /suitable property, and sent up 24 hour sentry duty. You will also need to arm yourself adequately.

Would you be prepared to kill intruders?

I do think a lot of people forget water.

You can easily fill buckets and big pots with water and drink that for 3 days.
It is very unlikely that water supply would be cut without a warning.
Tbh for three days you could survive with 1l per person. You would be dyhadrated but not dead.

Go on a foraging course. This way you can poison the competition.

Mushroom poisoning is brutal. Maybe welcome diversion form Armageddon 🤔

No need to panic buy anything. Just buy something small extra everytime you shop.

I was joking about panic buying, hence the exclamation mark.

Also, if there's no water supply then you cannot flush the loo. For the sake of health and safety, you'll need to crap in a bag that can be tied up and disposed of immediately. A roll of pedal bin liners in your stash is probably a good plan.

Or some cat sand in the bag.

That would be a fun day.

I loathe food shopping and am on quite a tight budget so I have always menu planned, batch cooked and try to make sure I have around 7 days worth of food in.Might panic buy some biscuits and chocolate in response to this! I would be screwed if the water went off as I never buy the bottled stuff, too heavy and too costly.

Water is the crucial thing to have, in case of a contaminated supply. Even OOD water is fine to boil for handwashing. Drinking water is absolutely essential though and I'd urge anyone beginning a stockpile to make it their first purchase.

Breadcat24 · 27/03/2025 17:16

@Gwenhwyfar You have just prompted me to make yoghurt! Thank you!
Scald milk, cool to about body temp put in soup thermos. Add culture sachet or bit spoon of live yoghurt. Wait overnight. viola!
Could also make flatbread to cook on our bbqs with yoghurt and sr flour.
So add some UHT milk to your stockpile

Phone torches are not that good in compleat darkness, plus they drain the battery very quickly.

We do not live in complete darkness in the UK even in winter. People went to bed early in winter - if for no other reason than it was warm!

It’s like primula cheese. It’s not rank. It only keeps for a very long time and doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge when unopened. There are many different types of soft/creme cheese and they are very tasty.

This is the list of food in the leaflet from our government recommendations, if anyone is interested. Would be interesting to read other countries advise.

WTH is cheese in a tube? Sounds rank 🥴

BobbyBiscuits · 27/03/2025 17:08

Well I've got way more than 72 hrs worth of tinned and packaged food. So I wouldn't starve.
Why is it only 72 hours we need to survive for though?

AgingWellThankYou · 27/03/2025 17:08

seriouslessness · 27/03/2025 13:33

In one of the Nordic countries it’s at least a week of supplies.

rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/30874.pdf

We Keep at least a week of supply - dry food and canned goods. Also solar charger for phones and some other essentials.

Lived in hurricane territory for a while before we moved to UK, and it just seems prudent in general. Not a major investment.

Well, that’s when you bring out your little camping stove. 🙂

From now on, a camping stove I shall have too!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/03/2025 17:06

GuessingGownaGoGo · 27/03/2025 16:40

Those little camping stoves are the business - less than £20 and a stock of gas cannisters for a tenner and you'll be fine.
Handy for making tea on the beach too!

Thanks!

Didn't think of that!

GarlicStyle · 27/03/2025 17:05

varden · 27/03/2025 16:44

Are they the type that you must use outdoors only? I seem to recall that some people died in their tent after using one to cook on, presumably it was carbon monoxide poisoning. Not sure if it was one of the camping stoves though.

Any combustion heating will do that in a closed space. It burns the oxygen, innit.

MrsCarson · 27/03/2025 17:05

One of our local farmers that I follow is saying this.
We already have over an week of dried and canned foods in that we use in rotation anyway. That and we have lamps and a few fully charged battery packs, to charge the lamps and phones
Only because we used to live in the middle of nowhere and have never lost the habit.

I could def do more than 3 days/weeks but I have a pantry and a full freezer so my sister always says if anything goes wrong she is heading straight to me!!

*Not for any disaster preparedness-just how I like it.
Get anxious if I am running low.
If I used the back stock then I get another to replace it.

Freezer not much use if the electricity supply goes off - and our electricity supply is run by mostly foreign companies.
Dried food and tins is what is needed - I used to buy both pulses and rice in bulk. Had enough for 2 to 3 months.
