To be upset a brothel has opened next door to my child's school

Walking past school last week I noticed a shop next door that had been shut for ages has now turned into a 'massage' place. Curtains firmly shut, doorbell on, locked door, 'calling cards' left on the outside for people to pick up discreetly. Checked online and the gumtree ads and reviews from men leave no doubt the type of massages they are offering.

The school is a special needs school and some of the older children, whilst vulnerable with learning disabilities, do walk to school alone past the premises. The whole thing just really gives me the creeps, the idea of a bunch of creepy men being attracted to the road right by all these kids, possibly drugs etc.

Anyways I messaged the class WhatsApp to try and co-ordinate complaints to the council and the general vibe was I was overreacting. We are in a big city, there's always going to be something going on in the vicinity. Why put some ladies out of work when they're trying to earn an honest living and as long as they aren't parading into school what's the drama.

I don't know, AIBU?

Oh ffs sake men who buy sex are also more likely to commit rape or commit sexual offences against women, how many times does it have to be said.

And your evidence for that?

Licky · 27/03/2025 15:06

Ddakji · 27/03/2025 13:23

All of them.

Consent can’t be bought. Therefore they are raping these women - yes, even including your happy hooker pals.

Of course it can. The definition of buying is a consensual transaction whereby money is exchanged for goods or services. If consent can't be bought all labour would be slavery.

Tumot · 27/03/2025 15:03

Licky · 27/03/2025 15:01

That's not what I wrote. You're deliberately mis-paraphrasing me.

I'm saying when someone pays for something, that demonstrates very clearly that they don't believe they're entitled to it. Punter no more equals rapist mindset than customer equals shoplifter.

Rapists rape. They take without permission. They don't enter a consensual agreement trading money for sex. That's what people who understand consent do.

GlomOfNit · 27/03/2025 12:36

Oh that's nice. So should we be grateful that punters aren't just going out and raping women? That is your analogy.

The old 'well, at least the existence of prostitution stops potentially abusive men from raping women because that's the only way they can get sex' argument is pathetic and apologist. Listen to yourself?

earning an honest living? The standards of this country really are in the gutter.

Right? I'm genuinely astonished at all the posts in the thread stating that having a brothel next to a school is absolutely fine because the kids aren't likely to know what's really happening there, and the women are just 'earning an honest living' and can't possibly have been trafficked or working there against their will, and the men who think they can purchase consent to use women's bodies are probably lovely and entirely non-dangerous people. Plus of course the obligatory, condescending 'be sensible please' to the OP for thinking that a brothel next to a school might be a problem. Just staggering to see so many apologists on MN.

So you would tell every sex workers they have actually been raped even if they fiercely disagree with you?

So what are the limited contexts in which you think it’s ok to have sex with people and have that count as “consensual”?

They are prostitutes, not sex workers. That phrase has legitimised the systematic rape of women and I refuse to use it.

I can’t help it if they refuse to see it. People do that every day of the week, deny the reality of their lives.

But please know that you are normalising having rapists purposefully, regularly and knowingly in the vicinity of a SEN school. That’s pretty amoral.

But you do you.

Proof? Consent can’t be bought - that’s just a fact. If it’s transactional it’s not freely given consent. Ergo, it’s rape.

I’m sorry the “sex work is work” mantra has blinded you to reality of prostitution.

Letstheriveranswer · 27/03/2025 14:49

I have put YANBU, because running a brothel is illegal and potentially a human trafficking issue.

But it is unreasonable to assume that men who pay for sex with adult women are a predatory danger to children.

She does want to have sex with him…for a direct fee. People have sex for all kinds of reasons and not all of them are for love or attraction.

(Although based on what I have seen and been told there are some stupid men who delude themselves that a women sleeping with them for money actually genuinely likes them.)

Edited

No she doesn't want to have sex with him. She wants money. The research that exists shows huge correlation between female prostitutes and disassociation from their own bodies. This is a coping mechanism from repeatedly allowing their bodies to be used for unwanted sex. Prostitution is not ' just another way to earn money' as you seem to be wanting to frame it.

Everyone who uses a prostitute knows he is having sex with a woman who does not want to have sex with him. If she wanted to have sex with him, he would not be paying.

Having sex with someone who you know is not attracted to you and you know does not want to have sex with you, is a really, really disgusting thing to do.

I have an adult daughter with a moderate learning disability (IQ of 56). Imo this is not OK. People with additional needs are particularly vulnerable and need to be safeguarded. But anyway it's illegal. There is no way it should be allowed near a school.

I have no reason to doubt what you say about your life experience, and your work with homeless people and those with addictions. I'm sure that gives you valuable insight here.

But the 'proof' that men who use prostituted women is not quantifiable, it's definitional. You cannot fully consent to sex if it's transactional. Because sexual consent ought to be on the basis of totally free choice. That's what we teach children in school, right? Or do we say 'it's totally ok for someone to touch you in the area of your underwear if they've paid you'? Consent is not something that can be bought, Cerealkiller9000. Hmm If you have to pay for the 'consent' of a woman so you can do various sexual things with her, you have side-stepped the entire issue of whether she actually wants to or not. She needs to, therefore she does. Do you think that's ok? Would YOU be happy to have a sexual experience on that basis? I'm not trying to offend you, and certainly don't intend to judge anyone who has had to resort to selling their bodies in order to survive. That's why I think the Nordic Model is the only way to tackle this abusive industry.

I have friends that are escorts and happy. You cannot tarnish everyone with the same brush unless you can prove to me that they’re being raped?

you are not showing me a single thing spar t from assumptions and your own opinion. Show me the facts. The stats.

meditatingwithdolly · 27/03/2025 14:39

YANBU to be upset OP, but the reality is that it will have very little impact on the school dc. I lived in a flat and the shop underneath became a 'massage' place. Description absolutely as you describe it, and I had to go in one day to deliver mail and the receptionist was wearing a negligee (a small part of me believed it was a legit Thai massage place with no happy endings) which affirmed it for me. Anyway, the worst part of it was that I was very concerned about the women working there, I used to see women with suitcases coming in every so often, but never, ever saw women coming out. They definitely had some sort of bunkhouse in there because I would see a man bringing in shopping, bedding etc but no women were ever seen leaving. The police said it was all legit Hmm

Most of these places use trafficked girls and women. The door being locked and shut is a big red flag that it isn’t consenting happy hookers making an honest living. If it were, they’d hardly need to be locked up. I would be reporting it to the police as potential modern slavery issue.

Absolutely this!

Lots of different people use sex workers for lots of different reasons. There is no reason to suggest that these people are either disgusting or predatory.

Are you saying that men who buy a wank into a woman’s body are all decent, upstanding feminist allies who have never even considered the possibility of using a misogynistic insult in their lives, and think women’s lives, time and efforts are as worthy as their own?

I remind you, I used to live in a shitty area. I just explained how I used to have to fight my way ( and run, ok didn’t say that) past the kind of scum that these activities attract. As a 13 yr old.

Nope. But I wouldnt assume.

id want the proof

That’s appalling that the council have allowed this - I would start with them. Kick up as massive a fuss as you can. Children should not have to walk past the disgusting predatory abusive men who will be going there.

JHound · 27/03/2025 14:25

WaryCrow · 27/03/2025 12:15

Why is it one hell of an assumption? It’s simple reality. This is the kind of men who use women’s bodies as wank socks. I take it you never had to live in poor areas of the country? I had to walk past similar kinds of scum regularly. I had to fight my way past occasionally too.

There are men who “use women’s bodies as wank socks” and men who don’t.

Whether they are willing to engage in a transaction with a sex worker or not has no bearing on that.

Not all men who engage sex workers see the experience as “wanking with a woman’s body”.

Plenty of men who are in non paid for sexual experiences wank using a woman’s body. It’s not black and white.

whatswrongwivme · 27/03/2025 14:20

We had one in my small town and I once got chatting to a business acquaintance whose tongue was loosened by a couple of beers and he told me he was a customer. With my enouragement he waxed lyrical about the "gorgeous young Chinese girls" that were "on offer", and how vocally they "enjoyed" the activities they got up to with him (a man of 55!) Afterwards I called the police and told them everything. They firstly watched and then one day raided the place and those concerned were jailed for sex trafficking. The girls were barely legal age and had been brought into the UK specifically to be sold for sex. Their passports were confiscated and they were told they had to "earn" the cost of bringing them to the UK. And that all took place behind the "front" of being an "innocent" massage parlour.

Doingmybestbut · 27/03/2025 14:18

Or possibly funding organised crime 🤷‍♀️ I’d be very unimpressed as well.
