To think this would be a rubbish mother's day present?

A soft play local to me has posted on Facebook suggesting a voucher as a good idea for a mother's day present, on the premise that mums can enjoy a hot drink while the kids play. Or as a gift for grandmother's so they can spend one on one time with their grandchildren.

AIBU to think this would be a rubbish gift? If I want to take my DC to the seventh circle of hell soft play I will... but that's not a gift for me! Equally, my mum/MIL are wonderful grandmothers, and are happy with a card and bunch of flowers on mothers day, but think even they'd raise a eyebrow at receiving this!

(For clarity, my DH has assured me I'm not getting this for mothers day!)

@Jc2001

yes..,, that’s exactly what I said 🙄

My mum asked for ankle weights and trainers for Mother’s Day. Everyone wants different things.

BeaAndBen · 26/03/2025 08:35

I salute their chutzpah

I think you might be falling into the trap of assuming that everyone is in the same position you are.

For plenty of grandmas - they enjoy the novelty and excitement of soft play, and a voucher for what they’d see as a fun outing with grandchildren would be a nice gift. With all the ‘is this suitable for their age, are the parents ok with them doing this’ queries covered because the parents bought the voucher.
(others would totally take it as a cheeky request for free babysitting).

For some mums - soft play trips are a nice treat. They’re not routinely affordable for everyone, and if you’re a generally play at home or the park kind of parent and limited on budget / space then a voucher for a soft play outing that covers enough for entry and a coffee would be a nice treat on a cold wet day. Beats standing in a wet and windswept park.
You’d potentially do that anyway without the voucher. Many wouldn’t.

It’s a know your audience for your gift scenario though. Definitely the love it and the lands badly options there .

What have the Germans ever done to you?! 🤣

Nothing, I'm sure they are very very nice 😀

NotAWandererAnyLonger · 26/03/2025 08:30

It would be a great gift if it included dad taking the kids and sending mum off for a spa day/leaving her at home in peace with a bath bomb, chocolate and a good book!

They don't like it up 'em.

That’s not appealing at all. They are clearly just trying to make money. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to receive that.

To be fair, making money is the only reason ANY company does ANYTHING for Mother's Day.

Agree this would be a crap present though.

You’d have to really hate someone to get them this. Absolutely, completely HORRIFIC.

This is about the size of it🤣

OMG horrible present. It s like getting a new dishwasher / iron / etc like a slap in the face 🤣

I think you've misunderstood - its the fact they're advertising it as an idea as a present for mum/grandma that I think is a bit rubbish. I take them to soft play (as do my mum/mil)... but it's not a gift for me. A gift for me is a box of chocs or flowers not a voucher for a kids attraction - that's a gift for the kids.

If it's something you want to do, and it is is entirely plausible that someone might want their MD to be a day doing something their DC enjoy with them, then it's fine as a present.

Won't be for a lot of women and lots will find it utterly dreadful but not universally.

I would be pretty neutral about it.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 26/03/2025 07:52

Ah you misunderstood, when mum receives it she gives it to the other parent (or the muddle headed adult who thought it was a good present)and buggers of to do her own thing.

Pickled21 · 26/03/2025 07:41

I disagree. My kids are young and I like to do fun stuff with them so I happily go to softplay and adventure parks or national trusts on the day with them. I very much like to have fun with them and we have to go into the softplay with my youngest yet. I wouldn't consider this a.present though just something fun to do.I don't understand wanting to spend a portion of the day away from the kids though whilst many mums do prefer some time to themselves. Just goes to show we are all different.

Yanbu the grandmother bit made me laugh, happy mothers day you get to babysit

Ah both my MIL and my dm like taking the kids to the soft play! My dm actively suggests it because she gets to see them being happy without having too much to worry about or organise.

The soft plays around here are quite clean and nice.

Allswellthatendswelll · 26/03/2025 07:35

A local adventure playground to us (that you pay for) is giving Mum's or mother figures free tickets this weekend. I would have thought surely better to give either parent free tickets as then Dad can take the kids!

Ragingbulls · 26/03/2025 07:35

Yeah I used to quite like a trip to soft play with the kids so I wouldn’t hate this. I liked seeing them have fun while I got to sit and watch.
A nice bath when they got home and good sleep because they were tired.
probably a risky present for most people though

hattie43 · 26/03/2025 07:34

It’s a terrible gift but it’ll be the marketing dept trying to ramp up sales .

Omg what a typo lol!

About the voucher - it's just a business trying to get sales.

But yeah a better mothers' day present would be the dad taking the kids to the soft play, leaving the mum at home!

SuperMarioSuperMario · 26/03/2025 07:32

I agree op. I can't blame them for trying, but this would be a terrible gift. I'd rather not get anything at all!

DappledThings · 26/03/2025 07:32

Oneandanotheroneistwo · 26/03/2025 07:29

Oh, you don't get a free coffee - you'd need to pay for it/use the voucher

Ah, I misread. Thought it was a voucher for enjoying a drink while you're there.

I can still see some might appreciate it. But then I've never known anyone consider softplay to be the hell on earth it is claimed to be.
