Being laughed at on the School Run

ChoccyBiscuits123 · 24/03/2025 09:28

Okay so I'm going to start by saying I'm not usually bothered by people's behaviour - I'm very much a live and let live person....however...there are two women on the school run that I am just perplexed by.

So for example this morning..I had just dropped my daughter off at school and I'm minding my own business walking home. These two other mums come from around the corner and immediately start laughing directly at me in my face...! They then stifled their giggles and walked past. This is not the first time this has happened.
Once they started singing a Kylie Minogue song at me from the other side of the road laughing and twirling around. All a bit much for me in the morning!!

We're all pretty relaxed dressers on the school run..they wear tracksuits and tie their hair up and I tend to wear leggings and a navy joules coat with miminal make up (mascara and perhaps a red lip if I have the energy) so it's not like I'm going to school in Kylie hot pants or full make up or other crazy clothing.

I'm perplexed as to why they've targeted me as I don't know them at all. It's got to the point where it is upsetting me. Someone laughing in my face or stifling giggles as I walk past is hurtful and it's starting to feel like bullying. Am I being too sensitive? Is my make up or dress sense so awful they cant help but laugh? I am so confused! Esp as they don't seem to do it to anyone else.

I want to ignore it and just put it down to them being muppets but I am struggling now.

I can't confront them as they will probably just see it as hilarious and as they've never actually said anything directly to me they could accuse me of being paranoid.

Any help or advice much appreciated. No nasty comment please.

What song are they singing? Is there a hint in the name/chorus?

I’d ask what the fuck they were laughing at.

I used to have school mums scowl at me because I’d be at school at 8:30 with a fresh blow dry, make up and nice clothes. They would be in last weeks tracksuit/leggings with an unwashed look about them. I had to be at work for 9am! Something they would never understand.

Rise above it. If Jeremy Kyle was still on they’d only be going home to watch that.

I manage to work full-time in a professional career without a "fresh blow dry, make up and nice clothes". Most of the time I'm in pj bottoms as I often wfh and no one can see my lower half on camera. Perhaps those school mums were reacting to your obvious snobbery and judgement.

CatsChin · 24/03/2025 10:10

When I've had situations like this, I've convinced myself that I REALLY fancy the people in question, and treat them thus. So cheeky winks and flirtatious greetings.

It's DEEPLY DISCONCERTING for them and they become slightly terrified. Very satisfying.

grinchsourcream · 24/03/2025 10:10

Agree with those saying smile and say 'good morning' to them. Bullies look for a reaction. If you don't let them know they are getting to you, they will soon stop - hopefully! Don't confront them - they would love that drama.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 24/03/2025 10:09

I would just give them a big, old, grin as I walked past them, like a tiger gnashing its teeth, and keep walking. You can sometimes see models in adverts doing that. It will give you something to focus on, will confuse them, and its not like they can accuse you of being unfriendly or nasty to them.

There was a lady living near me who was diabolically rude to me on several occasions with no reason at all, except I was English apparently, and I can't do much about that. When I saw her the last time I gave her the tiger gnash smile and a 'Hey, how're you doing?' while walking past at top speed. She looked confused, tried to respond based on a vague spluttering sound as I sailed past, but I was gone before she could reply.

spaceisfree · 24/03/2025 10:08

Oh OP. From your last post, it sounds like they were messing round one day in the street, doing Kylie for whatever reason, and your 'WTF' expression from across the street just made them laugh even more. So when they rounded the corner and saw you, it just reminded them of that time. They're not actually laughing AT you. It's just you being there made the Kylie thing in the street more funny, because they were having a laugh, at that time. You have nothing to do with Kylie so why assume it was directed at you?

Waitingforspring77 · 24/03/2025 10:06

Ignore them as previous posters have said. Just act as if they're not there and keep doing your usual routine. There's nothing wrong with you, they are nasty and immature. How sad their lives must be to go to the trouble of being mean to someone they don't even know. Don't let them get you down. They'll get bored soon enough

Azureshores · 24/03/2025 10:05

I'm guessing you are probably attractive and they're...not. They sounds like Sharon and Tracy types lol. Stick a pair of headphones in and and a benign smile on your face and don't make eye contact. They want a reaction from you so don't indulge them.

TonTonMacoute · 24/03/2025 10:04

Film them on your phone - or pretend to.

They sound pathetically childish.

mrsmiggins78 · 24/03/2025 10:04

There has to be something about you that makes them jealous and regress to the playground. Are you very pretty OP? That'll be it, if so.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/03/2025 10:03

There is a woman in my area whose kids were at school with mine. She had a reputation for being, let's call it difficult, and I ended up having a run-in with her. She used to glare at me every time she saw me, or, if she was with someone then she'd do the muttering/giggling stuff.
I used to just give her my biggest smile and pointedly say good morning to her. It confused the hell out of her.
I still see her around sometimes, and still do it.

MidwichCuckoo · 24/03/2025 10:01

They sound really childish and bitchy. They definitely didn't progress past age 14 as someone said.
It's probably something like one of them said you look like Kylie. Best ignored and don't give them the satisfaction of rising to it. They'll probably get bored and move on to mocking someone else.

Starfishfriend · 24/03/2025 09:59

A red lip is in no way casual
but that’s irrelevant to them laughing at you. they sound horrible.
you could just say oh what’s funny? Or you could try and kill them with kindness, just keep chatting and being polite and make them feel awkward. unfortunately it sounds like this is the entertainment for their clearly quite meaningless day. It’s incredibly cringe of them. Maybe you could just show your embarrassment for them with your facial expressions? I’m sorry you have to deal with that bullying though op, we hope once we leave school it’s over!

LollyLand · 24/03/2025 09:57

I’d probably say oh god it always stinks when those two walk past 😂

Is there another way you can walk? I have to say I felt nothing but relief when my child left primary school. I still see some of the school mums around the town now, still pumping out babies with no dad, pushing prams and having zero pride in their appearance. They are nobody to be fretted about I can tell you that.

Easterbunnygettingsorted · 24/03/2025 09:54

Hide of rhino needed for school gate bitches at times ime. When we moved it was about 2 years before anyone in the clique village spoke. I didn't live there thank goodness but ds went to school there.. Still does.. They warmed in time but by then I had no fucks to give. Pleasant hellos are all I give out. I wouldn't care but ds is literally the most popular kid in school!! No play dates here... Urgh... ... I think it's because I am an older dm. Way too old for that shit...

ChoccyBiscuits123 · 24/03/2025 09:52

The Kylie song was Spinning Around btw for those wondering

Thanks everyone. This morning's lovely encounter I know was directed at me as they weren't laughing as they rounded the corner and then when they saw me they started laughing and trying to stifle giggles as they walked past...charming.

I'm feeling better about it now, but at the time it felt so cruel and unnecessary. Especially as I'd had a bad weekend!

The Kylie thing was just plain odd...they were singing it and looking at me from across the road. Tbh they could've just been having a laugh and looking at me for an audience? Maybe my stony faced/perplexed expression is something they still laugh at? God knows!

Thank you for your responses. They ARE bell ends and I will try my best to just ignore them. I don't want to confront them as it'll start a dialogue and I'd rather never speak to them!

DD is in Year 4 so only a couple more school years and I'll hopefully never see them again!
It'd be so nice if everyone was just friendly and not utter berks but that's just not reality unfortunately 😂

Mean girls who have still not and probably will never leave the School play ground. I bet they had fellow Kids an absolutely bad of nerves and petrified to go to school and now they've got fellow Adults a bag of nerves. I know it's easy for me to say but just try and let it go over your head. I promise you op, they're the dick heads making an cunt out of themselves not you. They're the ones to be laughed at stupid cows. (Sorry to all cows for that insult) Grown Women still acting like Teenagers

40andlovelife · 24/03/2025 09:44

They sound like absolute bell ends.

You don't want to confront them so don't.

In this case I would wear a large smile every morning and have a bounce in my step, don't make eye contact just ignore them as though they simply don't exist or come in to your line of view. Make them seem absolutely insignificant to your day. Wear your headset and look like you are way too busy and happy to even notice them You will need to act for this I am afraid as their behaviour is hurting you. You will find that doing the school run in this way actually makes you feel better.

For what it's worth they sound jelous of you

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/03/2025 09:41

Smile and say “best get into school for your first lesson, don’t want to be late, your parents won’t be happy”.

countrygirl99 · 24/03/2025 09:39

I've always found the best thing to do is smile and say morning/lovely weather/other suitable polite greeting like you haven't noticed what they are doing. Really pisses people off.

LavenderBlue19 · 24/03/2025 09:39

How very weird, do you know them at all? Might they have heard something about you from someone else (true or not)?

They sound like knobs either way, so best ignored. If they are bullying you they want a reaction. Unfortunately when my son started school I discovered some women haven't changed much since their school bully days, and there's not much you can do about it except avoid and hope your child doesn't make friends with theirs.

GoldenCookie · 24/03/2025 09:36

I couldn’t not say anything I’d ask them what the problem is but since you won’t I would walk a different way or leave earlier/later to avoid. But personally I would confront them.

Picklepower · 24/03/2025 09:36

How bizarre, are you sure it's aimed at you and they're not just being silly together and you happen to be walking past?
