To think laundry isn’t the easiest chore

I do all the washing. DH says ‘it’s not that big a deal’

I do.

It’s a lot to do multiple loads a week, and dry it, and sort it into piles.

There are times when I find it overwhelming.

AIBU to say that if he thinks it’s so easy, then he should do it.

My dh used to criticise my laundry upkeep when the kids were small. He couldn’t understand. The last 2 years he’s been doing it and is virtually having a nervous breakdown😄.

LoudPlumDog · 24/03/2025 23:34

I agree with your DH, easy chore and I do it all.

It helps that I do a load or two each day, follow through and dry it all and put away before bed.

nottoplan · 24/03/2025 23:34

I find it’s an easy chore , actually not a chore at all , I like doing it , disclaimer no kids just DP and myself , he does whatever laundry needs doing if he’s home alone on his day off too

Do none of you have teenagers??!

6 of us here with adult sized clothes and it's a nightmare getting everything dry in the winter. All the socks go into one big basket now so I don't have sort them.

Then don't get me started on the towels!! At least 3 extra loads a week!

My teenagers do their own washing because I can’t keep on top of it. I still remind them to strip their beds but then they get in with it.

it’s freed up a lot of my time.
Op tell your dh to take over 3 loads a week so just if it is done.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/03/2025 23:24

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's that difficult. But I do have adhd and know exactly how taxing a task can be that others find simple.

If your DH doesn't think it's a big deal, he can do it.

Or you can do what we do in our house, where we're all responsible for our own stuff.

Icanttakethisanymore · 24/03/2025 23:19

Well it’s not hard but it does need to be done (a lot) so if it’s so insignificant he can do it himself. I can’t think of a household chore that’s hard, it’s just fitting them all in that’s difficult.

Tbrh · 24/03/2025 23:11

I think it is the easiest out of all of them, but most of our stuff goes in the dryer and I haven't done any ironing in years. I find folding clothes strangely relaxing.

I think this might be one of my ‘do I have ADHD’ questions.

I struggle with the multiple stages. Often I forget I’ve put it in the machine, or it stays in the drier for days. If I put things on the line I almost always forget to bring it in and it gets rained on. Also we have a huge number of socks that are all distinct pairs (no generic sets).

It’s easier if I do it all on one day because I don’t drift off, but then I find it a much bigger chore.

I don't have ADHD but I'm menopausal and that along with an underactive thyroid means my short term memory is shot to shit.

So I just write myself notes to 'empty machine' or 'take washing in from line' etc.

I do quite enjoy hanging the washing out on a hot Summer's day, I find it very satisfying, plus it dries super quick so you can get loads of washing done

When we had that 40° weather a few years back I spent the day washing everyone’s duvets.

It's like emptying the dishwasher. It just always needs doing.

Washing and drying is easy. I'll hang it out in the summer if I've got enough time, otherwise I'll use the tumble dryer.

Sorting into piles can be annoying but I always dump the lot on the bed so we can't avoid it. We can't chuck it all on the floor as our cat will piss on it all, so it all gets done and sorted.

I find it only gets annoying when I get behind, or if there's sheets/towels to wash as well. Thankfully I only tend to wash those once a fortnight. I've never washed bedding weekly. Completely unnecessary in my opinion but then maybe that's why I smell like a dog most of the time.

Stopping the cat from pissing on it is the most annoying part of the laundry process.

A lot of men are full of shit. They know fuck all about domestic stuff that they never do. Then they make comments about how easy it is.

Not my husband cos he has to do it

Heidi2018 · 24/03/2025 20:22

DappledThings · 24/03/2025 08:02

Well sure you might want a few drinks with it but if you wanted to show your displeasure you'd want to be pissed off, not pissed.

It's very easy if you have a machine + dryer at home. It's a pain if you have to go to a launderette.

I remember a post like this once where the husband said "you're not going to the river and beating the washing with rocks" and she was so upset, but it's true.

It's not well, yes, it's not hard, but it is relentless. And the husband can take it on for a month and then see?

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/03/2025 09:51

"DH says ‘it’s not that big a deal’"
Which begs the response 'I'm so glad you see it that way, you'll be happy to take it on then?'

As an aside, now would be a good time to show your son how to do his own laundry. It's a life-skill that everyone needs, emphasise that the role of a parent is to prepare their children for adult life, he's old enough now to start on this road yadda yadda yadda.

sashagabadon · 24/03/2025 09:35

Making beds and bed linen washing is also a regular and quite time consuming job if you have 3 or 4 or more beds

I don’t mind laundry but to do it properly you also have to include clothes management generally so going through kids wardrobes twice a year, removing clothes too small, taking to charity etc , buying new clothes, dry cleaning items like duvets, repairing items like buttons, deciding when clothes have seen better days, polishing shoes, cleaning trainers, sorting sports kits for school, large items like curtains, upholstery cleaning now and again, sewing name labels on, sorting uniforms like scouts etc, underwear sorting and re buying, reading Style and Beauty for fashion inspiration 😂 the list goes on and on.
i enjoy it personally but it is time consuming and a chore just like cooking

Feelinghurt2 · 24/03/2025 09:24

I hate washing. Absolutely hate it. The only nice thing about it is in the summer if you get the odd hot day (this is Britain 😂) and you hang some towels out on the washing line and a couple of hours later they are bone dry and kind of....crispy. I like that. The rest of it can go to hell. 😂 It doesn't end and in the winter there's wet washing on clothes horses everywhere or if you tumble dry it, the house steams up and it costs a fortune to run. When I win the lottery, I will outsource all my washing to one of those companies who come and collect it and bring it back all ironed and neatly folded. Or just buy a new outfit if one gets dirty. 😉

Smallmercies · 24/03/2025 09:06

I am a single adult household so all tasks fall to me - laundry is by far the easiest and most pleasant 🤷‍♀️.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/03/2025 09:04

If you’re the sort of person who feels the need to wash towels after every use and iron bed linen, it’s bound to be a chore.

I can’t say it’s my favourite job, but I do often think of my DM when I was a child, having to pull the WM out, plug it in, fill it up, and spend much of the day fishing each batch out and putting it through the attached mangle. And that sort of electric WM was more than many had. She was ecstatic when she finally got an automatic, probably in the very early 70s.

I wish I could afford running costs of a dryer. But also have a lot of clothes that are not drier safe.

I want a garden!!!!!!!

I haven’t noticed any significant increase in costs since we got it - maybe an extra £10 a month which is nothing when you consider how much time and effort it saves.

SedentaryCat · 24/03/2025 08:29

Since eldest DC has moved out the washing load has reduced significantly - at one point I was doing 3 loads a day and still not conquering the washing mountain! Now I do a load a day on average. Either dry outside or in the tumble dryer. I've also got a heated airer for things that can't tumble dry.

I try and keep on top of the ironing - half an hour a day or so. Youngest DC has one more term in school uniform and I'm looking forward to having no more shirts and trousers to iron.

daffodilandtulip · 24/03/2025 08:29

I love doing laundry. I feel like a proper grown up and an absolute bonus if I can sit and watch it on the line.

Aren't the 40s exciting 🙈
