To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

It’s whenever I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or a shop window. I’ve realised that whenever I settle down to do my makeup or wash my hands in the bathroom I sort of arrange my face, even though it’s only for me. I raise my eyebrow and smile a bit and tell myself I don’t look too bad. If I catch a glimpse of my unprepared expression, it’s like seeing my mother. Or a bloodhound.

Sooo true. I could have written this myself!! 51 next week.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/03/2025 19:22

@TwoRobins ha, so true - and more than once in a strange shaped hotel bath I’ve ended up on my hands and knees trying to get out

Like others, being called "madam" in a shop. I must have been in my 30s.

Now I'm 70 I find the new phenomenon (at least in Melbourne) of being called "miss" by male retail workers very annoying. Grrrrrr.

I’m 66. Please be gentle. What’s a mosh pit ?

Edited

It's at a gig where people are all standing in front of the stage. No seats.

Having to devise choreographed manoeuvres to get out of the bath.

Grey pubes? 🤣

Tip for you, get rid of the pubes and then they’ll never be grey so you’ll never be old.

frockandcrocs · 23/03/2025 19:09

I’m 34, two years ago a colleague gasped mid conversation and said ‘OMG, you’re from the 1900s!?’ 😂😂😂

Also, watching a cheesy teen movie and realising that the parents are hot and the main characters and practically babies.

When I realised last night watching Gladiators that Mark Glattenburg was the only one that I found attractive. All handsome young men but absolutely zero sex appeal for me.

I think Steel is gorgeous, and I am well old enough to be his mother.😎

mindutopia · 23/03/2025 19:00

😂 OP, I hit that point probably 13 ago and I am now 44!

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 23/03/2025 18:57

I’m a mature student.. I made the mistake of going ‘out out’ with some of the young ones.. the hangover definitely made me feel old 😭😭

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 18:56

I’m in my early sixties and although I don’t look or feel in any way ‘elderly’ (which 60s is too young for anyway) my realisation that I’m starting to get on a bit was that I can't leave the house without a box of rennie in my bag. They're in my bag and on my bedside table at all times.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/03/2025 18:52

I don't think I've ever gone to an even when I had to stand all night. Not even as a teenager! There were always chairs somewhere.

Itsjustnotthevibe · 23/03/2025 18:50

I am 45 and for me it was quite recent when I realised I could easily be the same age as the mum's of some of the youngsters at work.

annonymousse · 23/03/2025 18:50

I'm 61 and a young man got up and offered me his seat on a bus. Think that makes me officially ancient 🥴

Toothicktounderstand · 23/03/2025 18:48

Today when I trotted my horse rather than have a blast as she felt spooky. I’m 52. We’ve been together for 15 years and I’ve never thought that.

SweetcornFritter · 23/03/2025 18:45

Incidentally I am going to a gig tomorrow where moshing may well be involved. I’m going on my own and my 2 big anxieties are 1) what is appropriate to wear to a gig where everyone else is likely to be at least half my age and 2) will all the other gig goers be wondering what the hell grandma is doing there.

Dillydollydingdong · 23/03/2025 18:45

I'm 73. Sure it'll happen soon...

Lucelady · 23/03/2025 18:45

18 months ago when I had to use my walking stick all the time.
I'm 59.

When one of the local students stood up on the bus to offer me a seat - I pride myself on being a reasonably youthful 63 -denim jacket, trendy boots etc -but it don’t half make me feel old- picking up a prescription for free at 60 was a defining moment too

Fioratourer · 23/03/2025 18:36

When discussing which aftershave to buy my partner with the shop assistant and she told me she always buys that one for her Dad I realised she had put me in the parent age bracket. Slightly depressing as my children were a fair bit younger than her!

AllTheChaos · 23/03/2025 18:36

Mine was mid-40s when a 12 year old medic described me to a consultant as having ‘had a fall’. Official market of old age to go from ‘falling over’ to ‘having a fall’!

Pelicanos · 23/03/2025 18:34

When I was offered a seat on the tube aged 69. I was so proud of the fact that I hadn’t been offered one prior to that. I was very grateful for the kindness, but just a little disappointed.
