To think I’m officially old now? What was your defining moment?!

That’s it. I’ve now officially hit old age. Went to a concert with my daughter this week and it was standing. I was on the fringes of a mosh pit and it was very annoying. My feet are still bruised, my hips and legs are killing me and I can’t hear anything. I’m still absolutely exhausted too. I’m 58.

When did you have your epiphany?

The mirror tells me one thing, I'm getting old, I hate that bloody mirror! I'm struggling to get rid of menopausal pounds, my waist disappeared and more chins than I like. But..I still play two sports, do an active job and have a dog that does activities too. I don't generally feel old..just that bloody mirror likes to taunt me!

I’m 41 and am now the proud owner of crocs and Skechers. I bought them specifically for a Disney world trip as we’ll be doing a lot of walking but I’ve been wearing them at home as my god they’re comfortable.

I was wearing sketchers from age 19 so… I can’t link that with being old. I remain to be convinced crocs are comfortable but my 6yo would live in them!

I felt old in my 30s, but as the kids grew and I could do more I'm feeling young again (47 now). I party until 3am, I feel like I went backwards. The only thing is that my hips and knees sometimes remind me I'm not as young as I think.

I would like to hear about the compensations please 🙏

In my (admittedly very privileged) case some of the tangible compensations of my 50s are: almost paid off mortgage; more time with DH (travel, theatre etc); adult children who no longer need me much; tidier house as no longer full of teenagers; far less laundry; I no longer need to chase promotion, can choose my hours and could afford to retire now if I wanted to; no toddlers to wrangle; no more school choices or impending GCSEs/A-levels/UCAS to worry about. I can even cook the kind of food that DH and I like without having to factor in everyone else's preferences.

But most importantly, lack of concern about how I look, what other people think, and an absolute lack of interest in buying more 'stuff'. It's really liberating and a big change from my 30s. (Don't get me wrong, I still go to the hairdresser and generally look after myself, but being an invisible middle-aged woman is so much better than I thought it would be!).

I realise not everyone's so lucky, and lots could go wrong, but I am very much enjoying it for now.

DiabeticChocolateLover · 25/03/2025 17:48

I'm afraid you've not got long. Old starts at 60 apparently.

Mymanyellow · 25/03/2025 17:46

Was at work and as I wrote the date I said ‘ it’s my dd’s bday today. Ooh said one woman how old is she? 43 I said oh that’s as old as my mum.

RunLikeTheWild · 25/03/2025 17:04

When there was something up with my phone and instead of googling it myself I rang my son 😂

I was at a petrol station and sitting in the car, in front was a young man filling up his work van. Young and quite handsome and I thought, "I bet his mum's proud."

😂😂😂😂 This one made me chuckle

luckylavender · 25/03/2025 13:06

I'm 63, definitely not old.

Walker1178 · 25/03/2025 13:01

The easiest way to tell if you’re old is to fall over in public. If people laugh you’re young, if they act concerned you’re old!

I think I knew though when I got quite excited about a new washing machine

spiderlight · 25/03/2025 12:18

When the very young conductor on a heritage train I was on last year with my teenage son asked me whether it was an adult ticket I wanted. I thought it was bizarre that he'd think I wanted a child ticket....then there was a horrible creeping realisation that he'd actually been asking, in a roundabout way, whether or not I was eligible for a pensioner's ticket. I was 52 at the time.

marthaisintheway · 25/03/2025 12:05

I'm 63 now, but a couple of years ago we went on holiday to Greece. I never wear make up or bother much about my appearance on holiday. So when we arrived at the airport to return home, I was looking 'casual'. I walked into a crowded departure lounge and a woman in her 30s stood up and offered me her seat. I didn't know whether to kiss her or kill her. My DH thought it was hilarious. However I had the last laugh as he had to stand for 2 hours.

Fgfgfg · 25/03/2025 11:51

I find it's lots of small things. I had to fill in an online form. It had a drop down menu to select your year of birth and I had to keep scrolling, scrolling and then scroll a bit more to find mine. 😕

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 25/03/2025 11:29

My daughter ( now 51 ) used to joke about me being old, then the other day she said she realised she was getting old, when she looked at a pair of shoes and thought “ ooh they look comfy “ 😂

bellocchild · 25/03/2025 10:49

Probably when one of my closest friends died after a few weeks' illness. First reaction was, "She can't DO this!" Then I realised that at our age (76) she could and did...

Crikeyalmighty · 25/03/2025 10:18

@sunshinestar1986 me too!! I think it’s perception that because older people love em they are somehow ‘not cool’ - my H finds them ‘too light’

sunshinestar1986 · 25/03/2025 09:06

Erm what's wrong with sketchers?
My daughter's been wearing them since she was 7!
And even now is the only ones she likes
Me too and I'm in my late 30s

Bumble2016 · 25/03/2025 09:03

Got called "madam" in a shape when I was 31. That pretty much did it.

Porcelainpig · 25/03/2025 08:50

I'm getting to the point where lots of things in the news and media just annoying me, rather than make me react emotionally to it as they probably want me to. I'm interested in what is going on in the world, but stubbornly don't want to give the media what they want by responding in a heightened way, as it doesn't really help anyone. I guess this makes me feel old now. I just give less of a shit what people think after years of being a younger person who cares too much.

Also getting to the point at 43 where I have accepted you can't polish a turd and that I'm fit and health for my age, and that is better than the madness of trying your best to look like a sex android, which seems to be the way for women to look these days.

Choirgirl30 · 25/03/2025 08:39

When someone gave their seat up for me on a bus, I was 68 but it made me feel very old.

EdithStourton · 25/03/2025 07:14

When I looked at a photo of myself and thought, bollocks, I'm going grey! I was 53.

TappyGilmore · 25/03/2025 07:01

Probably now, as in just within the last few days. I have a birthday coming up, it is not a big one, but it is a number that sounds extremely old when I think about it. I’m okay with my age at the moment though!

Christine1998 · 25/03/2025 06:53

Avalovelace · 24/03/2025 18:07

Yeah, this happened to me when I tried to buy canesten at age 54. Apparently if you’re over 60 they can’t sell it to you. Was mortified.

Exactly what i was buying, mortified that she asked 🙈😂. Though i’m also intrigued why they can’t sell to over 60’s. Off to google lol.

bpirockin · 24/03/2025 23:20

When a lonely local child who had been chatting to me as she rode up and down the lane on her bicycle, posted an invitation to an afternoon tea that the primary school were hosting for elderly people who lived alone! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, being younger than her parents.

AInightingale · 24/03/2025 22:55

Bon Marche is the only place that sells trousers short enough for my mother...I buy all hers there but she is 89 and not 38!
