She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

"Spaghetti with a tyre"? - bloody hell, OP, how big is your pan?

Plmii · 23/03/2025 01:04

She's a CF.
That was very expensive.

Zandie · 23/03/2025 00:53

Me and five family members ordered one naan to share in 2012. We're still working our way through it as we also made the mistake of ordering one portion of rice as well. My sister had to eat my fifth of the family poppadom, I was so stuffed.

Your friend is a CF, OP. Her reply was crap - she was indeed hoping to get away with a free meal.

Her reply says

‘Oh right. I didn’t realise but never mind!! I’ll have to go into branch cos I don’t do online banking. Or I can hand * the cash to give you, she lives nearby doesn’t she’

As if!
Delaying tactics, buying more time to wriggle out of it, hoping you'll give up/feel too awkward to keep asking her if she keeps making excuses

£32 worth of food for one person from an Indian takeaway?! That's ridiculous. Maybe it isn't two of everything but it's more than one person's worth! Even for a bodybuilder. Unless it's a haute cuisine 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair doing Deliveroo?
One portion of curry alone and two sides is plenty for two people with bread or poppadoms?!

Spaghetti with a tyre

Best auto correct. Made me laugh out loud

The wine (I don’t drink) and snacks were for her, and she took the remaining snacks home with her

Hang on, so her part of the Indian was about 33 pounds, plus she bought herself snacks? Greedy little piggie!! She probably spent on the snacks and wine because she was planning to get you to treat her. And of course she took the snacks home instead of sharing with you!

33 pounds is a lot to subsidise someone. There was no reason for her to think it was your treat considering you checked out saying that you could settle up later. That was NOT a cheap takeaway. She was being a CF! So glad you didn't let her off the hook.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/03/2025 00:25

'YOU suggested a curry, then claimed your just eat app 'wasn't working'. With hindsight I should've just asked you to add your card details to my account? So no, I wasn't planning on treating you I'm afraid. Quite the contrary actually.'

Then she could've removed them after paying for the food she so desperately required.

So her excuse is double bullshit. She was clearly potless. Why the hell would it be your 'treat'. And how much fucking food could one person eat!

That sounds like she must have ordered about two starters, two mains and two sides just for her?

I'd make it plain it wasn't your treat but you'll be cool if she pays for a meal next time. Give her one chance to redeem herself.

Come next week, if she doesn't do just that I'd consider whether I wanted to be mates with her anymore. Cheeky cow!

There is no way you’re going to see that money. I’d cut my losses and send one final message:

“If money is so tight, maybe you should’ve accepted my offer to cook. All this quibbling about paying your share is so tacky, I’m embarrassed for you. So long CF.”

I think OP needs to cut her off once she’s got her money. She needs to keep badgering her.

CaptainBeanThief · 22/03/2025 23:48

How convenient that her just eat app was down. Didn't she know that she could just use the online version by typing just eat into Google Chrome and could order it that way.
She suggested getting a curry in the first place so, how does that translate into "your treat".
God, what a cheeky bitch.
Send her X figure of what she owes her with a message along the lines of, is this worth losing our friendship over?
It would be the end of it for me anyway.

Spaghetti carbonara! Bloody typo

Tyre might have been a bit too chewy tbh 🤔 :)

ExitPursuedByABare · 22/03/2025 23:41

I saw something similar to spaghetti in a tyre at my DH’s care home today. Wish I’d taken a photo.

Any road, who orders an Indian without poppadoms?

And beer?

MsBucket · 22/03/2025 23:41

MidnightMeltdown · 22/03/2025 22:55

Surely if you’re ordering a rice each you don’t need naan? You’re supposed to order one or the other 😂. No wonder it was expensive!

@MidnightMeltdown The plain naans used to be complimentary and you wouldn’t have to pay for them. But now you even have to pay for the naan 😅. Unless you were specifically ordering garlic naan or tandoori naan, they’d come free with the meal as well as some poppadoms. Those were my favourite part of the meal.

Sez who? Honestly, all this monitoring and faux horror on this thread about peoples food choices. Was it handed down to Moses on a tablet that thou shall order either rice or a naan. Never both? 🙄

Send her your bank details and the amount, don't engage with cash drop offs. Let her arrange it.

arcticpandas · 22/03/2025 21:05

CF! Remind her you were going to cook but she said she wanted to order a curry so you thought it would be her treat but you're willing to split the Bill with her even though she ordered more than you.

Tbry24 · 22/03/2025 23:28

If she doesn’t do online banking how was she going to be using justeat for a takeaway she wanted.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 22/03/2025 23:28

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/03/2025 21:50

What's with the "my takeaway is cheaper than your takeaway" and the "did you really eat double carbs?" competition?

It's not relevant to the OP.

Edited

It hardly ever is on AIBU. Waiting for someone to bring up Hungry House.

Sorry OP, she sounds like a chancer. Either that, or when she asked about takeaway and you offered, she assumed you were offering to get the whole meal. (Clutching).

oh phew 😂😂😂
if I came to yours and you offered to make me spaghetti with a tyre I’d most definitely offer to buy you a takeaway 😝

Is she 80 because no one younger than that doesn’t have online banking these days.

Ask her to pay you via Paypal then

Edited

I'm 47 and don't do online banking. Although I do use the automated phone service to pay bills and transfer money so she could do that instead of having to draw the cash out.

PullTheBricksDown · 22/03/2025 23:20

Ha ha at 'doesn't do online banking'
