She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

Yes, so why bother typing it all
out?

Good point.

I guess, I want to object to people suggesting it's relevant; same as the outrage over the price.

But I really think it's mad that people are saying there is nothing strange about it. It is way too much food. People are saying it's not a regular occurrence. It should never happen in the same way that nobody should be ordering multiple desserts in restaurants. A main with one side of two half sided is enough of an indulgence, a treat, a rarity. Three naan breads is bizarre.

HellDorado · 23/03/2025 13:56

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/03/2025 12:54

Why three naans?? @OnePeachA

For the love of all that’s holy, why do people keep trying to turn this thread into Rate My Plate?

It doesn’t matter why OP and her “friend” ordered three naans. It doesn’t matter whether it would cost that much in a different takeaway in a different town. The issue is who should pay, whatever the size of the bill and what it covered!!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2025 13:55

... and anybody who loves Indian takeaway knows that next-day leftovers are delicious!

Again, really irrelevant. But true.

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 13:54

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2025 13:18

Yes, this is how it is in my world too. If you host, you pay. Whether you cook or get a takeaway in.

Etiquette rules prevent bad feeling if they're followed - or if you're just clear upfront as to who is paying for what so that everyone knows the score. Not difficult.

I think it very much depends on the circumstances. If you say, as the host, I’ll get us a takeaway, (and point out it’s your treat) then that is different, but not in a million years would I go to someone else’s house, suggest a takeaway then sit back and assume they’ll pay because it’s their house (even if I was there for their home cooked dinner).

The key though really is clear communication.

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 13:51

I think the food portions are outrageous also. Indian food is so rich and calorific, ordering extra sides is crazy. No wonder there is an obesity endemic. A main each plus one naan and one rice is a really substantial meal and more than a whole day's recommended calories usually.

But it has ZERO relevance to OP's issue.

Yes, so why bother typing it all
out?

Bitofanchange · 23/03/2025 13:52

RampantIvy · 23/03/2025 13:34

That isn't eating disorder anxiety trope.

Three full sized peshwari naan plus two rice and a main course each is an awful lot of food.

And? What evidence do you have that it’s a regular occurrence? Why are you even interested in commenting on someone on the internet’s food intake, when ordering a takeaway?

Really very very weird!

Sounds like you're projecting. Some people eat more than others, some people eat less than others, some people are satisfied and full with less food, and are OK with half a large takeaway naan bread.

No need to make spiteful little digs against people who aren't big eaters. I mean the odd little 'joke' is OK now and again, as I know some people find it incomprehensible that some people don't eat as much as them, but spiteful jibes like this are just unnecessary.

Some people have eating disorders, and feel bad for eating 'too much' and the teeny tiny jibes constantly spouted on here time and again are just plain nasty, and tedious, and really quite pathetic.

There is no need whatsover to make rude comments about smaller eaters. As I said, you're clearly projecting your food and appetite issues on here. (Like a few others!)

But it's OK for the teeny tiny eaters to judge?

BatchCookBabe · 23/03/2025 13:49

MarkWithaC · 23/03/2025 13:48

No, I didn't mean you, I just pointed out that there is insulting going on both ways.

Oh OK, sorry! Shock

Crikeyalmighty · 23/03/2025 13:49

It is not the same saying ‘you host it- you pay ‘ - if the host had said, do you fancy a curry instead, saves me cooking, my treat- then that’s different- but personally for manners and finances sake I wouldn’t go to someone’s house presuming I could suggest whatever I fancied and expect them to pay for both of us

I'm not interested in your eating habits and they're really not relevant to this thread so why are you trying to insert them here? It's ridiculous.

I haven't. Don't try to twist what I've said to defend the shitty 'teeny tiny' shite that people spout on here, ALL THE TIME! 🙄

As I said, it's pathetic and tedious, and everyone who posts it thinks they are totes hilaire and sooooo original. I cringe every time I see it.

As I said earlier, the odd wee light hearted comment now and again I can take, but it soon starts to become nasty and berating. Digging at people who don't have big appetites on every single thread like this, with the teeny tiny comments is just tedious and annoying.

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 13:48

I will confess that I have never managed to eat an entire naan to myself in one sitting (and they're not particularly nice the next day).

BatchCookBabe · 23/03/2025 13:47

MarkWithaC · 23/03/2025 13:45

To be fair, there's also no need to question or insult the idea of people possibly eating more than you think it's acceptable/normal.

I never believe 'teeny tiny-wannabe' posters here, best ignored on any thread. I think they can't quite pull it off in real life so spout off online.

"Sorry hun, cant afford to treat anyone in this ecomnomy 😆 Send me £X for the food and I'll send you £2 for the fanta."

Perfect answer.

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 13:37

I think she is a CF.

But I also (sorry) think you're a bad host. Did she arrive then go to the shop or stop on the way? I would be pretty unimpressed if somebody invited me over, had no snacks in, didn't offer me a drink and revealed they were 'going to cook'. Generally I'd expect a meal to be served up shortly after I arrive, assuming you had an arrival time agreed.

It doesn't sound like you'd given any of this much thought so it's not too much of a stretch you hadn't done anything with your home to make it look nice for a guest. Is it clean? Would she be worried about eating out of your kitchen?

If your friend is prone to baking and sharing she might have much higher expectations around these things than you. Have you ever been to her house? Perhaps she goes all out when she is hosting.

So maybe she was highly unimpressed then sent a snippy reply to you as she would never dream of accepting payment for food from a guest.

I still think she's wrong but I don't think you've been great either.

Perfectly demonstrated eating disorder anxiety trope!

Name calling a person who eats nann bread with their takeaway.

I just wouldnt be friends anymore. Not saying Im right, but bringing it up and her sending the money, would just have me cringing inside out and be annoyed, so I wouldnt want to be friends anyway. And her doing this would just sour it completely. I just cant abide tight people.

Same, I can’t abide tight people either.

I’d be swerving her in future after the recent shinanigans with her trying every which way to get out if paying her way. She has no qualms with telling you outright either. Do your future self a favour and wave bye bye to this woman!

You didn't address it.

You misread the first post by the OP.

I said, 'I guess the difference though is that, in those cases, it's their decision to order in, whereas here it was hers.'

MarkWithaC · 23/03/2025 13:30

ItsaWarmWindfromtheWest · 23/03/2025 13:28

@MarkWithaC The friend suggested getting the curry. The OP had offered to cook.

I suggest you improve your reading.

Perhaps you didn't read that bit.
