Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Not for children. Unless they were ill educated by their parents, but picking flowers is a sweet thing to do, just unfortunate it was from the OP’s garden.

It's not sweet to pick them from a park either. Councils plant flowers for all to enjoy.

aliceinawonderland · 23/03/2025 18:43

surely even three year olds know they should never pick flowers as they are there for everyone to enjoy.

Also that you never go into other people’s gardens.

This thread beggars belief!!

PracticalLady · 23/03/2025 18:37

I understand, I was upset to see people picking (stealing) daffodils in the park. I onlyvhope her parents told her never to do it again.

Maybe a sign saying No trespassing would be more appropriate.

Pippyls67 · 23/03/2025 18:34

Sorry to hear this and that you really needed the spark of joy. Life’s shitty at times and this isn’t much in reality but I suspect it’s like a last straw kind of situation for you. You sound like you need to treat yourself in some way how ever you can manage or afford. You need a good cheer up about life, I hear you X

Oldtigernidster · 23/03/2025 18:32

I’d have been livid. There’s no excuse for theft.

Give her a planter bowl and some bulbs. They're a couple of quid in Poundland.

So she learns that if she takes something, she'll be given something else? By the person she took from in the first place? I think your logic's slightly convoluted there...

Why on earth should the OP buy a thieving neighbour anything?

Sad for the kid not to be taught not to do it. I remember teaching my daughter the exact thing. This girl is possibly ruining lots of gardens. Who knows...maybe parents dont care

Ladysmirnoff1 · 23/03/2025 18:24

Go in their garden and pick their daffodils - see how they like it......

Growlybear83 · 23/03/2025 18:23

schtompy · 23/03/2025 18:12

Just put a little sign next to the daffs next year (make it pretty) saying please don’t pick me. That’s all you need to do.

Maybe a sign saying No trespassing would be more appropriate.

YourArtfulPlayer · 23/03/2025 18:23

How weird are people to get so offended by a child picking daffodils. You realise kids need to learn, she made a mistake, something most people in this thread probably did as a kid too. Nobody got hurt.

There doesn’t need to be a big drama. The OP raised it with neighbour, the neighbour sent an apology and no doubt educated the child why. Job done.

I actually cannot understand why people are so up in arms about this and the fact the mother didn’t knock on the door. Does it truly matter.

catlover123456789 · 23/03/2025 18:22

I'd be so sad if someone picked my flowers. Now having said that, I noticed the bulbs at the front of my garden have no flowers on and I assumed the deer had had them, maybe it was kids!!!

Dittyditty · 23/03/2025 18:18

Mother's Day is a week ago
Maybe the little girl wanted to get in early🌼

Just wanted to give everyone an update, messaged the mum last night on WhatsApp (it was bed and bath time by the time we got home so didn’t want to interrupt so late) - it’s still showing as unread and there’s been no reply, but my doorbell did ping again this morning. The mum come round with the daughter and left a small flower pot on our doorstep.

We were visibly home at the time so tbh it would have been nice if they had knocked on to verbally apologise instead of dropping and running without acknowledgement, but it’s something

Edited

How about just being grateful and pleased an effort to make amends was made after your message was sent instead of complaining about it?
You haven't a clue what's going on in that family, or what the mum said to her child, but you messaged and got a response. I'd message back you found a lovely pot of flowers on your doorstep and assume it's from them and thank them. I'd also ask if the child wants to come over and help you plant them. Try it! 😊

8 years old is not super young. It’s 2 years off the age of criminal responsibility.

it is not “super sweet” for someone else’s child to trespass on your property and steal it.

@sanityisamyth Yes you're right. Two years off the age of criminal responsibility. Read that again. Why do you think that may be? Perhaps because she is a very young child.
Childhood is for learning from mistakes.

Her mother took a new plant pot round her house in way of apology with the little girl.

I did not say it was super sweet.

I said the anger by some on this thread is utterly bizarre and uncalled for.

Hardly a heinous crime.

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

The kid might come back and nab them again!

Teddybear23 · 23/03/2025 17:57

Sorry but I’d be absolutely bloody fuming 😡 I love my garden and it takes time and energy to keep it nice, Daffodils are my favourite flowers and I LOVE to see them in Spring. I’d definitely go any complain to the parents and tell them to make sure their little brat comes nowhere your garden ever again.😡

Mamofboys5972 · 21/03/2025 22:51

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Even sweeter if she had knocked on the door to ask

Timetochillnow · 23/03/2025 17:52

murasaki · 21/03/2025 23:09

Go round to theirs and pick them right back.

Two wrongs don’t make a right!
what does this teach the child?

LUCYLOULOU2 - can you pop round and ask the parents if they can explain to her that it’s not the thing to do? Maybe going forward the child can come and plant some bulbs with you for next year!

ThisGreenBalonz · 23/03/2025 17:51

I live in zone 2 London and my daffodils get pinched by children every year lol, usually not all of them though! I get annoyed too, but my husband tells me that if you leave them on display to the public then thats the risk you take! My displays are on the border of my land and the public footpath though - if children are venturing onto your land/through a gate id have a word with the parents x

oldmoaner · 23/03/2025 17:49

70+ years ago, I picked our neighbours flowers and he smacked my hands so hard and took me home, I never did it again. The child needs telling so she knows it's wrong or how will she learn. The mother may not realise you saw her doing it so decided to keep quiet.

Noodles1234 · 23/03/2025 17:47

I find this really sad, I planted mine and I LOVE seeing them every spring, such a joyous riot of colour in mainly dull days. It’s a treat seeing them dance in the sunlight.

A vivid memory of mine, I was probably early teens ish with a group of friends, we had gone to our local park. Walking back we saw a sea of daffodils, excited we each picked about 5 for our collective Mums. Walking home excited we had done this the park warden had run after us, out of breath he gave us a real ticking off. Honestly, we hadn’t realised, we just saw flowers as if they were daisies. I still feel ashamed sometimes.

When you next see her, I’d ask her if she had seen them, as they bought you so much joy. Sometimes kids sadly don’t have a clue of the sentiment or effort.
