Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

This is awful! She is 8 and old enough to know better! I bet if you raise it with the mother she won't apologise, make her child apologise or give the child a telling off for it, as is the nature of entitled parenting today. She will probably even defend her by saying her daughter can pick flowers wherever she wants. This is not "sweet" it is stealing and her parents should be supervising her.

YourGoldHedgehog · 22/03/2025 06:42

I think it is stealing. The kid is old enough to understand it is wrong.

My kid is two and already knows just look at flowers and not pick them. It only took a few times to say this.

Sunbeam01 · 21/03/2025 23:15

I couldn't get upset over this because they were picked by a very young child.

Some of these responses are extremely OTT.

Edited

8 isn't very young, it's certainly old enough to know not to go into other people gardens and pick their flowers and OP has said that this child has daffodils in their own garden.

HappyHealthy23 · 22/03/2025 06:37

I have an eight-year-old currently, and I'd be absolutely furious with her if she did this.
I don't think she would because I've spent six years making sure she knows which flowers you can pick and which flowers you can't pick, so I'd be flabbergasted as well as furious, tbh.
Definitely go and have a word with the parents. "Sweet", my arse.

ThejoyofNC · 22/03/2025 06:33

8 years old and picked from someone else's garden but left the ones in her own? She knew what she was doing and needs to be taught not to take things without asking, also known as stealing.

If I was her parent I'd be sending her round with replacements, but given their child's actions I doubt they will.

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:57

Thanks all - I don’t feel so silly about feeling so sad about it now.

I am also slight annoyed about it because they literally have their own daffodils in their front garden but they’ve been unharmed!

Pop over tomorrow and start picking them 🤣😉
Seriously though, I’d be annoyed too!
It may be ‘sweet’ in the girls mind to do this for her Mum (if that is the case), but it’s bloody annoying for you.
I would definitely go and speak to the parents, otherwise whats to stop her helping herself every time something flowers in your garden

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 22/03/2025 06:25

LoremIpsumCici · 21/03/2025 22:49

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

No it's not a 'minor harm'. Why should some kid get to take the flowers when the OP wanted to enjoy them in HER garden? The parents of that kid should be ashamed that their kid has the bad manners to go into somebody else's garden and pick their flowers!

Itsamummybear · 22/03/2025 06:24

I wonder if we live close by… There was lots of beautiful daffodils in a house a few doors down, I was cleaning the table yesterday and saw a little girl with her parent and sibling and she was holding a bunch of daffodils (not wrapped like they were bought) I wondered, are they from that lovely garden?!
Either way… I would be upset too!!!

Pumpkincozynights · 22/03/2025 06:21

I would be fuming.
I’d go round and tell her parents, whilst pointedly looking at the flowers growing in their garden.
It isn’t acceptable.

Zanatdy · 22/03/2025 06:15

I’d go and knock or put a note through the door. As this kid might come and pick your tulips. So his parent need to tell him / her it was wrong to pick someone’s flowers. Especially as they have their own! Daffs bring a big smile to my face too, so i’d feel annoyed at this too.

Pallisers · 21/03/2025 22:54

if you know which neighbour it is I would go to them and say "your dd picked my daffodils today - can't do anything about it now and I know children will be children but I would appreciate if you could explain to her that the daffodils in my garden - just like the wildflowers in the wild - are not to be picked.

There is nothing super sweet about a child picking flowers from someone else's garden. That little spark of joy - gone because the kid picked them.

Agreed.

MoreChocPls · 22/03/2025 06:05

Tell the parents.

lunar1 · 22/03/2025 05:40

Definitely speak to the parents or your tulips will be gone too. 8 is plenty old enough to know not to do this.

ExpatMum41 · 22/03/2025 05:39

Mamofboys5972 · 21/03/2025 22:51

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

That's not "super sweet", that's theft, the child is 8 years old and therefore old enough to know not to take things from other people's gardens.

Littlemisscapable · 22/03/2025 05:35

TheFairyCaravan · 21/03/2025 22:56

I can’t believe that people are making excuses for this and saying it’s “sweet” that the little girl did it for her mum. If my children had done it I’d have been really cross with them and taken them back to the house to apologise.

I’m sorry @Lucylooloo2 I would be upset too.

This. Why is this child walking around randomly picking flowers in the street. If she is old enough to walk around on her own she's old enough to know you don't pick flowers you buy them ! It's not sweet and very annoying..

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/03/2025 05:32

If she's around 8, she's old enough to know not to go in other peoples gardens, and if she's picked your daffs and not the ones in her own garden I'd bet she also knows she is not to pick the flowers from the garden either.

Have a word with the parents - they may not have realised where she got them from, and if you don't, theres a good chance it'll happen again with more of your flowers.

Kids don't know this stuff automatically, but parents should be teaching them! It's not sweet to destroy other peoples stuff/steal from their gardens!

Redglitter · 22/03/2025 05:08

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:59

Eek! They only think making me feel slightly better is that I can see my tulips coming but feel like I need to be very protective of them now!

That's as good a reason as any to have a polite word with the parents or she'll be back for them too

oohlalalaa · 22/03/2025 04:59

I have loads of daffodils, and a side garden that runs parallel with a pathway, a couple of weeks ago there was a pile that had been pulled up and thrown on my lawn. I would have preferred it if someone was pinching them for themself, but at least I was able to gather them up and put them in a vase for myself. I know I have loads, and they're all over everywhere, but they do bring joy to me because its a symbol that means spring is on its way, and they're so pretty.

Incidentally they lasted way longer in a vase indoors than supermarket ones do, so I might plant extra bulbs this year and give myself a patch to pick from.

Yes, but kids don't think like adults even if they know right/wrong. What can OP do? File a police report?
Maybe tell the child's parents, but for what?

Thieving brat?
I despair. 🤦‍♀️

You know what you need to do.
Go now strip their front garden of daffodils

She's 8 mate

Just a child who repeatedly stole property not belonging to them.

As long as the child isn’t being called a thieving brat to their face, I think a poster being annoyed with them and describing them as such on a forum isn’t the end of the world.
