Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

She can't exactly put them back on the plants!

Op I get you feeling you have missed out on your daffodils but think of it as a little kid was trying to do something nice for their Mum. There is something quite sweet in that!

What’s sweet about stealing??

What if the OP is a disabled older person whose only pleasure is looking out of her window and admiring her flowers whilst watching the world go by? Is stealing from her still sweet?

The child needs to be told that taking flowers from other people’s gardens is stealing.

My five year old has known for a long time that it's not allowed to pick flowers from gardens, it's not a difficult concept to grasp. Dandelions and daisies etc are fine, garden flowers are not. I assume the people who think it's funny/cute don't do much gardening, it's a lot of work

Trendyname · 22/03/2025 08:09

True, it's not child's fault but unless op tell parents, they won't be able to explain. Though op should say it in a non complaining way.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/03/2025 08:05

DS1 learned not to pick (most) flowers at 2. He'd picked a tulip and I told him "poor tulip, it only has one flower a year"
Some bulbs hit harsh springs of wintery weather so they don't get their full glory every year.

I've always emphisised that flowers in parks and gardens are beautiful and we leave them there to grow and for everyone to enjoy.

8 is plenty old enough to understand not to take others' flowers (be it in a garden or publicly owned). 8 year olds have pretty well developed basics of social rules... if they were taught along the way...

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Mother's day isn't until next weekend so that's a stretch.

Since when has it been ok to go into someone else's garden and pick their flowers?

It was a fun activity for me too, along with ringing neighbours door bell and running 🙈😹

I don't know what those emojis mean, but I don't find this amusing in the slightest. What a nightmare you must have been to your neighbours as a child. Didn't your parents do anything about your behaviour?

Aw seriously, these are as cheap as chips, just think about the joy they may have brought her to bring them home to her Mum. Kids at 8yrs old are just that.. kids’

stop sweating about the small things

she’s gone into another person’s garden. Does it not say something that she has not picked the ones from her own garden? Maybe as someone has told her not too, but it’s ok too do it too a neighbour?
you take ages making your garden nice, no it’s not ok.
you do not need to go mad but a word is needed. I’d be pissed if this happened to me!

Anewdawnanewname · 22/03/2025 08:02

We have daffodils that grow outside the entrance of our estate every year, and every year a woman and her children strip them away over a couple of weeks. I have her on fb and it makes me sad seeing them there looking cheerful for everyone compared to when she posts them half dead in a sad looking vase on her story. I haven’t got the balls to say anything, and I don’t think I’d have the balls to tell the parents here. But I’d post a message on our fb group about it 😂

Trendyname · 22/03/2025 08:00

Aliceglass · 21/03/2025 22:54

Im sorry. I’d be annoyed too. Kids don’t think the same as adults though. When I was 5 I picked all the petals off a neighbours rose bush for confetti… 🙈

It was a fun activity for me too, along with ringing neighbours door bell and running 🙈😹

Mumofyellows · 22/03/2025 07:59

That would really piss me off! Children shouldn't be touching things that don't belong to them, on someone else's garden! I'd be very annoyed too OP!

onetrickrockingpony · 22/03/2025 07:58

My four year old knows that picking flowers is wrong. I’m surprised at everyone here making excuses for the 8 year old. She knew exactly what she was doing and needs to be caught out.

if you know which neighbour it is I would go to them and say "your dd picked my daffodils today - can't do anything about it now and I know children will be children but I would appreciate if you could explain to her that the daffodils in my garden - just like the wildflowers in the wild - are not to be picked.

There is nothing super sweet about a child picking flowers from someone else's garden. That little spark of joy - gone because the kid picked them.

This ^

snotathing · 22/03/2025 07:57

The child knew enough not to pick her mother's flowers or she'd get into trouble. But she thought she'd get away with stealing from a stranger's garden. Sneaky. I wouldn't be impressed with the mother doing nothing if the child arrived home with them.

Not a generational thing whatsoever; it was a common thing to do when I was little. DM is a boomer, and was annoyed a woman had absolutely shouted and ranted at me as a very little girl. I had tried to pick some flowers from her garden which were growing over a wall for my Mum, so no trespassing or anything. I was a good kid, just little, and as a child I didn't think I was doing any harm because they were growing over the wall, and I hadn't taken many. Obviously it is still wrong.
I ran home crying my eyes out. Dm thought the woman was OTT, and was really annoyed she had upset me, and told me that she used to do it in the late 1950s/60, so this is not a new thing. Honestly, this memory still sticks in my mind to this day; I just didn't understand; it wasn't malicious! It was a time when DCs played out more and usually unsupervised; it was a very different world back then. I also picked flowers from my own garden for dm, which I was allowed to do, while I was searching for "flower fairies." I think in my child mind I didn't think I was doing anything wrong, with them growing over the wall. I was really shy, and a full-grown woman ranting and raving at me is a memory I will never forget.

I bet you never picked flowers that weren't yours again though.

EasternStandard · 22/03/2025 07:53

That’s terrible. I know it’s a small thing but I like seeing daffodils each year.

Dc learnt early on it’s not nice to pick flowers from people’s gardens.

Moonnstars · 22/03/2025 07:52

I like how people assume that the child was being 'sweet' and taking them home for her mum. She might have just picked them as she liked them, then got closer to her house and then maybe even realised she shouldn't have picked them so ditched them. Mum would be none the wiser.
If you know the parent then maybe have a word (though I feel that some parents would think this is being ridiculous, you can see that from the comments on here, so not sure what response you would get).
While this is just flowers, what's to stop her seeing a garden ornament she likes in someone's garden and taking that? Don't know if anything like that has happened in your area but maybe that could be used as a warning to the child.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/03/2025 22:57

I definitely picked flowers as a kid and would never have an iota an adult would be upset about it! Kids don't realise these things

But they need to learn it's not acceptable and they won't unless someone tells them.

TheSoapyFrog · 22/03/2025 07:43

YANBU, I'd be gutted. I love the spring flowers in my gardens and love wandering about just looking at them. I'd be extra gutted as I do spend quite a bit of money on a variety of bulbs.

I'd definitely have a word with the parents before the tulips come up! And anything else you may have in the summer.

Also, if daffodils are cut too early, before the foliage has gone yellow, it's unlikely that they will grow again next year and will just come up blind.

LoremIpsumCici · 21/03/2025 22:49

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

Not the point. By 8 you should know that you don’t steal flowers from someone’s garden.

Ah yes, that super sweet gift of something stolen from someone else. My DD is 3 and knows we don't go into other people's gardens because it's not ours.

Super sweet? Not from Op's point of view.

It’s stealing.
Children need to be taught that taking things that don’t belong to them is wrong.
Would it be OK to take a £1 bunch of daffs from a supermarket without paying?

NetZeroZealot · 22/03/2025 07:23

Sunbeam01 · 21/03/2025 23:15

I couldn't get upset over this because they were picked by a very young child.

Some of these responses are extremely OTT.

Edited

It’s never too young to learn that taking things that don’t belong to you is wrong.
Stealing in fact.
