Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Aww, that’s so sad for you, I know how that feels. I wonder if you could give them a couple of bulbs so that they can grow some next year?

Aww, and when your neighbours' kids steal your earrings from the trinket dish (when unfortunately the window was left open) and the little Borstal shites got in, maybe you can give them your pendant as well, so next year they will have a set? Are you seriously proposing to reward ASBO behaviour? I hope this is acing in in terms of sarcasm on your part and I am just taking everything at face value again?

I would buy some daffodil bulbs and take them to the little girl in a gift bag with some earth and a little gardening set. Explain how she can plant them in her own garden and eventually pick them herself-as they belong to her. And you then keep yours as you also grew them in your own garden.
Depends on how well you know the family of course?

This is the most unhinged, stupid thing I have read all day. Maybe OP should also buy her some
chocolate as a treat. Jesus f Christ.

This. Some of the responses on here are batshit. 8 is plenty old enough to know you don't go into other people's gardens uninvited, let alone steal flowers.

Seems like so many people let their kids do absolutely whatever they want with so little teaching of right from wrong. Depressing.

Yep. It's the way the child knew not to pick mummy's flowers, but the neighbour's were fair game!

ruethewhirl · 22/03/2025 11:39

Brefugee · 22/03/2025 09:51

no. OP needs to go to the parents, explain what has happened. Ask if they would prefer her dig up their daffs to put in her garden to replace them, or if they are going to pony up so OP can get replacements.

All you MNetters who think 8 year olds are cute for stealing: Do your jobs. Tell your feral children not to steal. FGS what on earth is wrong with you?

I would be annoyed and agree 8 is far too old to be coming into people's gardens and pinching their flowers.

On a lighter note, without boundaries who knows where this lack of respect for other people's bulbs will end up:

Thanks all - I don’t feel so silly about feeling so sad about it now.

I am also slight annoyed about it because they literally have their own daffodils in their front garden but they’ve been unharmed!

That's just the icing on the cake. Honestly, OP, I would speak to her mum - before the tulips disappear!

MasterBeth · 22/03/2025 11:28

AffableApple · 21/03/2025 22:57

This.

(Also Mother's Day is over a week away, so unlikely to be for that for those suggesting so.)

The 8 year old is presumably not factoring that in. They're 8!

aliceinawonderland · 22/03/2025 11:26

So people who think it’s ok… would they mind if a pint of milk or parcels were stolen from their doorstep? What if the parcel is just a book worth £1 from abebooks. Does that make it ok?

snotathing · 22/03/2025 11:25

I'm not sure why people think anything needs to be explained to the child as if she simply made an error.

She deliberately left the flowers to enjoy in her own garden and stole every one of her neighbour's daffodils so she could enjoy those inside also. Leaving her neighbour with none.

I'd wonder about how concerned the mother will be.

It's nice to know you'd be fine with a neighbours (young) DC entering your garden and stealing things that belong to you.

Exactly!

And those children love your wrought iron wall art and think the gnome is sweet and want those in their bedroom... just take it!

anyolddinosaur · 22/03/2025 11:15

yes, a quiet word with the parents. Hopefully they'll buy you a bunch (or give yours back) as an apology.

I have to say... buying a quid bunch of daffs from Aldi really would not make up for my front garden having none in because some 8yo decided to pick them all.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 22/03/2025 11:22

Sunbeam01 · 21/03/2025 23:15

I couldn't get upset over this because they were picked by a very young child.

Some of these responses are extremely OTT.

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Going into your neighbours garden and stealing their flowers is not super sweet. People really have no manners or standards anymore. Pathetic!

WHAT? They already have them in their own garden, which the girl left untouched, preferring to steal the OP's.

LoremIpsumCici · 21/03/2025 22:49

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

And broken shelters would be repaired next year (may be even sooner), and vandalised by graffiti walls would be repainted next year and swines would learn not to touch others' property next year. Attitudes like that (silent acquiescence to horrid ASBO behaviour by decent citizens) lead to the country being ruined in every respect. That and the importation of the worst the world has to offer, be it customs, people, attitudes, films, products and diseases.

They have them in their own garden. Not picked.

its theft.
itsnot sweet at all

wombat15 · 22/03/2025 11:06

I would be really annoyed. A child that is old enough to be out on their own is old enough not to trespass and steal flowers from people's gardens.

Mother’s Day is over a week away! I would be really annoyed if my child picked flowers from a neighbour’s garden.
I would definitely go and speak to child’s parents so they can explain to child that it is not appropriate to do that.

Alittlewordinyourear · 22/03/2025 11:03

I can understand a child seeing the pretty flowers and wanting to pick them. I cannot understand why a child thinks it’s ok to go into someone else’s garden to steal them. Particularly not ok when she has flowers in her own garden but didn’t pick them

JMSA · 22/03/2025 11:02

It’s bratty behaviour and she should know better Flowers

CustardySergeant · 22/03/2025 10:42

A tree? 😮 Good grief.

In Fife, thieves were digging up mature bushes etc from front gardens during lockdown.

Then, just after we were coming out of lockdown, thieves went into Letham Glen near Leven and stripped out all the bedding plants the council gardeners had just put in.

Growlybear83 · 22/03/2025 10:57

I agree with all the other posters saying that an eight year old should know better. When my daughter was three, let alone eight, she knew that you don’t trespass on people’s private land and you don’t steal anything from anyone, ever. But apart from that, why was an eight year old wandering the streets stealing from people’s gardens without any adult supervision?
