Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Complain to the parents, the child should not be trespassing or stealing. Tell them you have video evidence.

As for those that think it's sweet - FFS
I hope the parents address the issue- if she goes through life stealing and trespassing she'll end up well.

Thank you. Yes. When my husband died, one of the few things to help lift my spirits was being able to see flowers in bloom in the garden.

My mum has a specific bed filled with my dad's favourite flowers. The thought of anyone picking them (even to make their mum smile on mother's day) makes me feel sick. And I don't care how precious that makes me sound.

💐 For you @WearyAuldWumman .

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta so there is flower picking bat signal is there?

Well IME most kids have both eyes and FOMO. They see Sarah from number 7 knocking on the OPs door and getting special permission to pick her daffs (yes, even just two) and think I want to do that too. Even if it'd never occurred to them before.

WearyAuldWumman · 23/03/2025 12:51

A PP suggested that daffodils are cheap. As many of us have said, there's more to value than monetary cost. However, I'll point out that some varieties are harder to obtain and can be costly.

I've cut back on ordering bulbs and plants for the moment, but certain daffodils can be quite expensive - and then there's the labour involved in feeding said varieties so that they don't come up blind.

My brother's widow has planted flowers where his ashes are buried in the garden. I can't imagine how distressed she'd be if someone entered and picked them.

Don't be a twat. Is there a hierarchy of flowers that people are allowed to steal from other people's gardens? Also, people with 'real' problems can still be upset or annoyed about other relatively minor issues. Sometimes, minor problems can be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

@Wishingplenty It just goes to show if adults are prepared to go to war for a child taking a few flowers, then there really is no hope for achieving any peace on this earth.
If adults were able to role model and teach children respect and boundaries then there is more likely to be peace on earth.

minisoksmakehardwork · 23/03/2025 12:25

I have flowers on my front garden. Some are prolific and flower loads during their blooming season. I don't mind if kids pick a small handful of those because another bunch will pop up quite soon. But I would be gutted if my daffs and tulips went.

No harm in knocking on the child's door and while acknowledging what's done is done, saying they're not to do it again.

Extiainoiapeial · 23/03/2025 12:24

Some back tracking there no doubt.

No one is going to war. What an exaggeration. Your first post was really mean, just own it.

I think the responses are truly interesting and also concerning. It just goes to show if adults are prepared to go to war for a child taking a few flowers, then there really is no hope for achieving any peace on this earth. The human race truly is petted minded. Everyone has their own opinions and views, and the backlash I am receiving for offering a more level headed prespective shows what stage we are at, as humans trying to live in a more harmonious world. It ain't happening anytime soon. Op if it was such a heinous crime that this little girl committed then why did you not just call the police?Surely that would have been the right thing to do for such a serious incident.

No. After your mean and spiteful little post you don't get to lecture the rest of us sanctimoniously like this or present your view as 'level headed'. And you can lay off the exaggeration of what people are saying; no nobody is being aggressive, nobody is going to war and nobody thinks it is a police matter.

Much of the threat to world harmony is from people like this child's parents who don't foster respect in their children for other people's property, and by extension their boundaries; which ultimately lowers the quality of life for everyone.

Plmii · 23/03/2025 11:57

Very rude to drop and run.
Such an awful example to the child.

Don't be a twat. The world would be a better place if children and adults respected other people and didn't steal from them. Basic things children should be taught. Nobody's going to war.

ArtTheClown · 23/03/2025 11:52

All that fuss your making over flowers that are only one rungy up from a weed is truly pathetic. One only assumes you have no real problems.

We have a long, dark and quite bleak winter in the UK. Daffodils are one of the first signs that the end is in sight and that spring is definitely on the way. There is still so little colour, the trees have not yet started going green. Those splashes of yellow bring immense joy.

People who get joy from that will go to the time and effort to plant them. It doesn't matter if the bulbs are cheap, and besides who is to say that the person planting them isn't using limited resources to buy and plant something that will bring them happiness?

It's not okay to to vandalise and steal something that probably means a lot to someone, that they have put love and care into. Just because you don't understand the value, doesn't mean that none is there. For some people, this will be their last spring. They're entitled to the joy of their own flowers.

What a nasty post. If you have/had kids would you literally not teach them that it’s wrong to steal flowers from other people’s gardens?

Your post is unkind and deliberately mean. Trying to take a hurtful shot at someone like this is what is 'truly pathetic'. I don't think I will report it though, may as well leave your grubby little unpleasantness up here to shame you some more.

@Busybeemumm umm busy bee you did read and comprehend my post?
Whereby op knocks on the door and complains about picking all her flowers but simultaneously doesn't crush the child and offers her to pick a flower if she knocks first to ask permission.
Win, win.
Umm no where did I state that this child should have free reign to ops property and garden.

Ummmmm

But what if other children on the OPs road then decide to knock on her door and ask nicely to pick a couple of flowers? Where does it stop?

They weren’t expensive perennials, they were daffodils.

Is there a price point below which people are not allowed to be upset at trespass and theft?

Krest · 23/03/2025 09:56

That’s actually nice of the mum. Some people don’t like confrontation or might be too mortified for a face to face thing but it’s the thought that counts and I wouldn’t worry at all that it wasn’t face to face.

Enough4me · 23/03/2025 09:55

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/03/2025 09:51

And you are just not very nice. Maybe you are the child's mum.

Yes could be, or another pathetic parent who doesn't think DC need to be socially considerate as they are not themselves. There are unfortunately lots around!

Which only flower once a year unlike e.g daisies r sweet peas which will flower more the more you pick them. The OP won't see the daffodils flower for another year. Also, it's not for you or anyone else to decide what is expensive or not, they were valuable to the OP.

I'd accept the flowers as an apology and move on.
An 8 year old who walks past their garden full of flowers to rip them out of the neighbours will no doubt already be hard work for her parent(s), it's not normal 8 year old behaviour, but it doesn't mean she'll do anything your way as she's aware now that you have a camera.
