Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Some utter cunt just beheaded my first tulip of the year 😡😡😡 didn't even take the whole flower to enjoy, just ripped off the petals. May they burn in hell.

(No snails or slugs in that patch - too dry - definitely human, I guess dog at a stretch)

Excellent text to Susie and her parents.
You were extremely gracious under the circumstances.
Ignore the many posts from the dregs that think you were unreasonable in your mild annoyance.
You most certainly were not.

I think the responses are truly interesting and also concerning. It just goes to show if adults are prepared to go to war for a child taking a few flowers, then there really is no hope for achieving any peace on this earth. The human race truly is petted minded. Everyone has their own opinions and views, and the backlash I am receiving for offering a more level headed prespective shows what stage we are at, as humans trying to live in a more harmonious world. It ain't happening anytime soon. Op if it was such a heinous crime that this little girl committed then why did you not just call the police?Surely that would have been the right thing to do for such a serious incident.

Dear god, do you actually genuinely think you have offered a more level headed perspective? Your posts have been the epitome of mean-spiritedness and spite towards the OP. You are receiving a backlash because your posts have been truly horrible and it's fucking laughable that you are talking about peace on earth and a more harmonious world. Your lack of self-awareness is off the scale.

Yanbu. Even the ignorance and entitlement of people on this thread blows my mind. I’ve walked past daffodils poking through someone’s fence who lived next to a park and my daughter wanted to pick them. I pointed out that these don’t belong to the park (could have seemed this way because of proximity to the park) they are from someone’s house. Ie I actually parented my child, clearly unlike some of the idiots on this thread.

she shouldn't be picking then ones in the park either!

Mmm you said it "boundaries" which is literally what all wars are about.

I refer you to my previous reply to your post. Wars are about "I want that, its not mine but I am taking it" and yes they are about boundaries. They are about bullies not respecting them!

Umm I think your post is truly interesting and concerning.

Calling someone out for doing something unkind is not “going to war”. This poster enjoys the daffodils in her garden. It’s unkind of the child to pick someone else’s flowers, meaning that they can’t enjoy them any more.

As a parent, I would absolutely want to be told that my child had done something like this, so I could teach them not to. And make amends. It doesn’t have to be a police-worthy matter for it to be called out.

deeahgwitch · 23/03/2025 16:40

You are aware @Mamofboys5972 that the OP posted that there are daffodils growing in the 8year old child’s own garden.

@Lucylooloo2

I'd message "Thank you for the lovely pot by way of apology. Since I didn't get a chance to speak to you I just want to be sure that 'Susie' now understands that picking other people's flowers is not a nice thing to do?".

👏👏👏

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Don’t be an idiot. These flowers belonged to the OP

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

Maybe so, but it’s only March this year and she wanted them to look at in her garden THIS YEAR.

I hope you and your boys don’t live near me, what a ridiculous attitude to trespassing and theft. Hopefully there’s someone in their life to teach them right from wrong.

ArtTheClown · 23/03/2025 15:27

I hope you warmed up before that reach.

Thank you. Yes. When my husband died, one of the few things to help lift my spirits was being able to see flowers in bloom in the garden.

That's lovely. ❤

A funny little story, when my mum was alive, she had a small patch of communal garden at the back of her house, but she (in her own words) was 'not very good with flowers', so she left it bare.

She and my OH were always at loggerheads, (in a mostly friendly way thank goodness) so being a bit mischievous, I planted some pansies, the ones that have black markings, that always look like a mans face with dark eyebrows and a dark moustache. Now, my OH had a dark moustache and dark eyebrows, so we figured every time she opened her back door, she would see lots of little flowers that looked just like her son in law.😄
Luckily, she did see the joke.

They weren’t expensive perennials, they were daffodils.

A) daffodil bulbs can be expensive
B) value isn’t just about money
c) i don’t care if it’s a pile of empty ale cans, no trespassing little brat is welcome to take anything from my garden.

Those of you defending the eight year old must be quite a treat. Would love to buy your neighbours a drink.

No. After your mean and spiteful little post you don't get to lecture the rest of us sanctimoniously like this or present your view as 'level headed'. And you can lay off the exaggeration of what people are saying; no nobody is being aggressive, nobody is going to war and nobody thinks it is a police matter.

Much of the threat to world harmony is from people like this child's parents who don't foster respect in their children for other people's property, and by extension their boundaries; which ultimately lowers the quality of life for everyone.

Mmm you said it "boundaries" which is literally what all wars are about.

Super vom more like. If it's my spark of joy, I want it. I don't want it stolen to give to someone else.

Not super sweet at all - stealing and trespassing on someone else’s property.

NovemberMorn · 23/03/2025 13:39

WeWillAllGoTogether · 23/03/2025 09:58

Is there a price point below which people are not allowed to be upset at trespass and theft?

Exactly.
I had a coat stolen once, it wasn't mega expensive but it kept me warm in the winter.
Had it been a dearer coat it would have mattered, but as it was so cheap....🙄

I find your comment interesting. What do you think Putin is doing? He's wanting something that is not his and just taking it.....same as Hitler did. Yes its a massive reach a huge stretch of circumstances.....but it is the same principle. "I want that, I will take it"

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 13:11

Do you have a garden gate and border (wall, fence) or is it ‘open plan’? Is it practical to put a sign up if it’s an open area? No trespassing?

I wasn’t going to respond to this but in the end I wanted to put my two cents in.

I acknowledged in my first post that there are much bigger problems in this world than this…. but just maybe I too have experienced much bigger problems and these daffodil are more than just ‘weeds’ to me.

Also FYI you can’t one minute call me ‘truly pathetic’ for simply expressing sadness and then the next minute say you want to live in a harmonious world. Doesn’t really work that way.

I wont be posting any further than this, but the damage has been done, the parent has (somewhat) apologised and so we move on.

Thank you to everyone that’s replied and offered advice and tried to make me feel better x

Very well said, OP.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 23/03/2025 13:07

I think many non gardeners don't realise how much effort and patience goes into gardening. There's no instant gratification how we have become so accustomed to in the modern world. I am glad it has been resolved and hopefully the little girl had learnt a lesson.

My mum has a specific bed filled with my dad's favourite flowers. The thought of anyone picking them (even to make their mum smile on mother's day) makes me feel sick. And I don't care how precious that makes me sound.

💐 For you @WearyAuldWumman .

Thank you.

Yes, I agree totally.
