Feel this country has become rotten - benefits

She11y · 20/03/2025 23:13

A studio apartment in my area is about £800 per month.
A minim wage job is around £1500 per month net.
After you've worked in a hard and demanding job - most minimum wage jobs are demanding - you've got £700 to pay for food, travel, bills, clothes.
You might end up with £100 left over each month. Working hard all your life with no hope of owning your own home or having any sort of financial stability.
No wonder people don't want to work. Make owninf a house affordable and over night 1/3 the people claiming benefits will stop.

My point is that a lot of people are on benefits because they're depressed at the hopelessness of their futures, and try to avoid working.

This country would collapse if they stopped immigration.

The average British person is far too lazy and unskilled to cover everything needed or helpful if all the immigrants left. Half the premier league is immigrants, each of them pays more UK tax in a year than the average Brit does in a lifetime. And that's before we get to all the medical professionals and scientists who aren't British. They aren't replaceable. My neighbour is from an EU country, had been here 30 years, he left after Brexit. Unfortunately he was a specialist children's surgeon and only 5 people in the UK (now 4) know how to do his job. The person he was supposed to be training to replace him wasn't interested in learning.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 15:18

@EasternStandard No I cannot give you the numbers of immigrants we will have over the next decade or so. I don't foresee much reduction in the current projection. What do you think numbers will look like?

thankyounextplease · 21/03/2025 15:16

Lyannaa · 21/03/2025 15:16

Even people in favour of Brexit like that fool, Jacob Rees Mogg said that if we left the EU, taxes would have to go up and the UK wouldn’t benefit as a whole for at least 50 years.

it's never going to benefit, there are no benefits that will miraculously appear after 50 years.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 15:13

@EasternStandard but we have had immigration for years & don't have a pyramid? We are not going back to a pyramid shape as I said.
I'm not arguing for immigration, I'm saying governments won't stop it. Do you understand the difference in those statements?

Won’t stop it as in what exactly?

Can you be clearer about numbers. Won’t stop it could be 1000 or 750k.

When you post that what are you envisaging will happen over the next decade or so?

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 15:16

@Secretmeetings sorry no suggestions I'm afraid. I have dual nationality as do my dc so it's easier for us.

thankyounextplease · 21/03/2025 15:15

Move to a different area.

I don't complain that I can't afford to shop at Harrods, I just don't shop at Harrods.

Too many people whining they can't afford to move out. I moved out of home at 20 into a houseshare 300 miles away because it was all I could afford in the one place I was offered a job (362 job applications later). One room. It was shit, which gave me motivation very quickly to jump up the ladder, find side hustles to make money, figure out what I could do that would pay better than being on min wage. And that was in the 2008/9 recession where things were a lot worse, there were no jobs, especially not for people who had no experience yet.

Stay as you are and complain, or be uncomfortable for a bit because you're looking ahead to the future.

Lyannaa · 21/03/2025 15:14

I’ve said this many times but nobody took the impact that Brexit would have on this country seriously. We are no longer in the single market, it’s made everything more expensive and there is less investment. The pound hasn’t recovered either.

Nobody seems to want to take ownership of this and instead it’s blame disabled people, asylum seekers or anyone else because that’s easier than excepting that you made shit decisions and now have to face the consequences.

@Secretmeetings much of the west is facing ageing populations but aren't in such a pickle as us. Do you have a skilled job or youth?

Aiming to start early retirement in the next few years or so, but may need to speed it up the way society is heading. Appreciate any relocation suggestions.

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 15:09

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 15:00

A never ending pyramid is not sustainable so we’re going to need it.

But we don't have a pyramid now so why do you think immigration would mean a pyramid?

An immigration Ponzi scheme whereby people argue that we need increasing numbers due to the ageing population.

As per your first post.

My response is as said, it would be more difficult to step off this without AI and automation. With it there’s a chance to reduce immigration and lower impact of that. Keep taxes though, people are focused on bringing in more people still not looking forward to how to retain tax take without them.

Why do you thinking ageing populations are not a problem globally?

JHound · 21/03/2025 15:07

The problem with society is that it is based on people, for the most, sharing costs and living on dual incomes.

But I still have no people who prefer to be on benefits because “life seems hopeless.”

I don’t like the entitled attitude behind it.

Itsyourwifeymacrid · 21/03/2025 15:04

@ilovesootymy line of work is irrelevant but my line of work makes me pay tax every week which goes along to pay benefits for people that don't work,I get there's disabled people that's not my issue my issue is self inflected disabilities and us the public have to fund there habit,it's wrong, then us working for them to get the money they need they blow it all by dinner time so go out asking people to lend em money in the streets,my child is disabled and for him to be in the same category as a druggy and get the same benefits is wrong,he was born with this they wasn't,next question?

Depressing thread. Please can anyone recommend places to relocate to?

Is that one way mission to Mars still recruiting?

CyclingAddict · 21/03/2025 14:58

We are, very quickly, becoming a third world country as @User32459 has said

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 14:55

@frillygillymillypopulation is more than birth rates it’s also immigration so it can go up.

I have said what I think, in the first post. AI and automation will help ameliorate the issues. A never ending pyramid is not sustainable so we’re going to need it.

Govs need to look at tax take from that and secure it. If we want to avoid collapse it’s a lower younger workforce, AI related tax take here. Countries that see profit go o/s will struggle. It will become more about tax from that than immigration and labour.

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:53

Without that it seems our system demands an unsustainable pyramid shape, we can’t keep just going up though - unless people think we can?

I replied the below to the above

Who on earth thinks that?😆

we can't get back to a pyramid shape, that ship has sailed. Or did you not mean pyramid shape @EasternStandard because you seem muddled?

User32459 · 21/03/2025 14:52

Secretmeetings · 21/03/2025 14:39

Agree.

The collapse of society is a horrifying thought. What will happen? Civil war, extreme poverty and mass homelessness, violence and crime.

Just become more like the third world countries that migrants are fleeing from.

CyclingAddict · 21/03/2025 14:51

I know it is not easy for everyone but if 18-24 year olds could remain in the family home in order to save for a deposit for a house. (Or return home after Uni).

Even on NMW it could work:

Weekly income: £350

Board/lodgings: £50 (not all parents want a payment)

Leaving £300 per week for clothes, socialising, travel, etc…£1,200 per month which, surely, could mean managing to save £800 per month.

£800 x 12 months = £9,600 per year.

in our area you need around £20,000 for a deposit

going into a rental makes it too difficult to save

sorry to state the obvious

frillygillymilly · 21/03/2025 14:49

On one hand immigration is here to stay - your view.

My view is governments won't stop immigration.

And who on Earth thinks population will keep going up also in your posts.

That was in the context of balancing demographics, that ship has sailed. You can't reverse falling birth rates or at least I don't know a country that has. Do you?

You haven't answered anything I have asked you?
