I’ve been on mumsnet since the early days, it’s seen my family grow up and become adults, seen me become a grandparent.

its been a happy place, a supportive place through thick and thin and I’ve made lots of contacts who I will miss.

the supportive threads are being lost amongst ones of hatred and intolerance for difference, for the others and by threads about high incomes not being enough, of how disabled people are increasingly hated, how children with SEND are an inconvenience. Boomers, of which I am not one, are hated.

is there anybody mumsnet members actually like?

im taking a break, however long is needed until the hatred is less.

OP posts:

Ahhh ... OP I feel for you. I'm another long standing member.

It really gets my goat when Justine does her media appearances extolling the amazing support people get from MN and completely ignoring the toxic culture that dominates this place now.

I mean it's not just MN but the whole of the fucking internet.

But still. It ain't what it used to be.

I think that's the real issue, the Internet as a whole has become so toxic, people are just so nasty to each other. I think people having anonymity had just given them licence to be worse and worse and the confidence to be awful grows each time someone gives them a pat on the back with a like or backing them up. You see it on these threads, if everyone is supportive you see less nastiness but if the first page of posts is a pile on, it just snowballs, almost like competitive nastiness.

But you only have to look at this thread to see the OPs point, people jumping on here desperate to put a kick in and add a nasty post when they could ignore. One supposedly has a migraine but still found the time to pop on just for another kick. Its just all so unnecessary and cant help but see their point.

This thread is ridiculous. If you have an ulcer because you are taking medication on an empty stomach then maybe organise to have breakfast! There are free food options in every area. I can’t buy into self inflicted misery. A bowl of cereal is available to everyone.

Unless someone is going to bring that to me, it's not of use to me.

No, I'm 2 pounds above being underweight.

@ThePurpleBuffalo It’s utterly bizarre to post a picture of your waist.

I'm simply proving how difficult it is to have enough to eat. I'm a disabled peri menopausal woman in my early forties - I shouldn't be almost underweight.

Cosyvibes · 20/03/2025 11:11

On the whole I do like mumsnet. Sometimes though it's a bit heavy and not much of a laugh. I seen a new chat forum advertised on Instagram the other day, the are giving out free accounts to people, presumably to try and kick start it. So I signed up for a account. It looks good although a bit quite.

Obviously some threads deal with controversial subjects, so if you're personally invested in a topic where there are strong opposing views, it's highly likely you'll read things you don't care for. If that offends or hurts you, it's better leaving those threads to those who don't mind a bit of a row.
I 💯 agree with this. In the past I'd waste my time on threads about WC people, the word CHAV set my teeth on edge, now I don't read them.

Every WC person was identified as wearing a tracksuit with a fluffy hair bobbin, bad teeth.
The jo jo bow phase was a definite class marker, ridiculing young girls as a little chav.

OP, have you never offended anyone on MN? It happens.
Just avoid the subjects that are triggers.

I admire your restraint. But when you're a working class vegan MiL who used to live in a council house and have botox, trying to avoid reading something rude would mean the pickings would be slim to say the least. I've the skin of a rhino so tend to wade into the fray regardless. 😁

@Surfshoe no not blended families. Son offered a loan under specific conditions then changed the goal posts wanting early repayment. He's calmed down now as I'm seriously unwell.

Did you then get loads of people try to vilify you for not just lying down and taking their abuse? That seems to be the way it normally goes.

Oh yes. I had to accept their version of events as they were my DC (adult and very financially savvy). What I wouldn't accept was the lies they put in their posts. Quoting things I hadn't said. Tbh I think 50% were on the sauce. Horrible posts usually peak on a Friday after 8pm!

TheWorminLabyrinth · 20/03/2025 08:47

I've been here in various names since 2007. It has been a victim of its own success, in that it is too big now and too easy to be anonymous/name change.

I always thought, and still do, that MN is populated (in the main) by people who are very bored with their day-to-day lives. People who fabricate stories. There are very few high earners in this country and yet they are all on MN? Available to post all day? Nah.

It also used to have a different demographic. People who were intelligent, thoughtful, and articulate. Now it's like Netmums but without the glittery tickers.

Tattle is better. ✌

The occasional hateful comments about older women are shocking and unsettling - we’ll all (hopefully) be older one day.
Gransnet is more chilled imho….

Gransnet can be Reform Central at times - some big fans on there!

verysmellyjelly · 20/03/2025 08:25

@WhereIsMyJumper I agree with you. I don’t understand why so many people seem to take the conversations personally. It is happening a lot and has been for ages, but has been especially bad lately, I guess due to the new Green Paper. I understand people are anxious, but I have a real issue with the attempts to pressure / shame others into not talking about a topic. I’m definitely not denying it is stressful for people who rely on disability benefits (I actually wasn’t that stressed about it due to the severity of my disability, but basically “caught” anxiety from Mumsnet and ended up watching the speech live to check I wouldn’t be affected) but I just can’t agree that it justifies emotionally blackmailing others to stop talking about it every time the topic comes up.

I’ve been here 12 years, not seen the changes that you refer to tbh.

It’s even weirder to respond to someone saying they agree with a change to legislation surrounding disability benefits by taking it as a personal attack. Something else you see a lot of on here…

Off to join Gransnet? (Genuine question)

They are often worse. They can be hateful and cruel they are just more shady and spineless about it.

I put a post up at the end of the year about a family financial disagreement.
I had five posters lay into me and accusing me of criminality and abuse. They hadn't read the thread and decided to make up their own back story. A lot of it got taken down and there was good advice. On this occasion I fought back. I usually just disengage but I thought no, you're being vile and I'm not having it.
Ive been on here for over twenty years and it's generally helpful. I don't post in FWR as there is too much hate for the LGBT community.
These people have no answers only their own take on why people feel different. How it effects them and never a consideration for the feelings of others.
My advice pick your threads wisely. Give advice when you can help and bog off when you can't.

Did you then get loads of people try to vilify you for not just lying down and taking their abuse? That seems to be the way it normally goes.
