Wife did embarrassing thing in hotel, now DD is copying – WWYD?

Posting here because I genuinely don’t know how to handle this without causing WW3 with DW.

We were on a family weekend away a couple of weeks ago, staying in a nice(ish) hotel. DW has this (in my opinion) mortifying habit of calling out “Housekeeping!” in a sing-song voice before entering a room, including our own hotel room. No idea why, she thinks it’s hilarious.

Anyway, fast forward to this week and now DD (4) has started doing it CONSTANTLY. Every time she walks into a room at home, at PIL’s house, even at nursery drop-off! This morning she did it in M&S toilets when someone was actually in there, and I nearly died of embarrassment.

I gently mentioned to DW that maybe we should stop encouraging it, and she got all huffy, saying it’s just a bit of fun and I need to lighten up. But I can’t be the only one who thinks this is just Not A Thing normal people do??

AIBU to want this to stop before DD starts doing it at school? WWYD?

Oh OP if you are embarrassed by that which is pretty cute you are in for a whole world of pain when she really does do stuff to embarrass you. Try to relax a bit and she will have moved on to something else in a week or two if you give it no attention.

I love my dh but he can be odd. For example he used to hiss at me like a fucking cat including in public. He did stop when I asked him tho

I used to do that to my brother when he wound me up. To be fair, I was about nine or ten at the time. 🤷‍♀️ Of course, the dickhead just wound me up even more then. 😡 😅

Christ you’d die of second hand cringe if you lived with us.

My DD announced at a family gathering that mummy likes to sniff her own knickers.

Don’t know where the fuck she got that one from because I am not, in fact, a secret snicker niffer but it did make me laugh 🤷🏼‍♀️.

My son has always been obsessed with sniffing people's armpits.

He's also significantly speech delayed so he's not got the best manners.

We were in John Lewis café when he got bored of playing with his little lego set and just shouted across the table for the entire café to hear "oi let me sniff your pits"

So my son is also not a secret sniffer, he's quite happy being an overt one.

Have you seen that video of a tiny kid announcing 'Look! It's a fucking goat!' ?

There will be far, far, FAR worse things to come.

Let it gooooooooo ...

That's so funny. Then someone corrects him/her and the kids says "no...it's a fucking goat" again. Something like that. 🐐

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 20/03/2025 15:04

Thank goodness you're not my husband. You'd die of cringe.

Sometimes when I go to pick my son up from school I put on my dress with the frog face and we will greet eachother by saying ribbit, in the playground in front of all the other parents.

When my family and I are out and about and we get separated we shout CA-CAW! to locate eachother.

Growing up my brother and I had a rule where if one of us started beatboxing the other had to breakable, no matter where we were.

I think sometimes you just need to get a grip and accept other people having fun isn't about you.

Fair enough, maybe I am being a bit uptight about it. Just worried she’s going to do it in some really inappropriate setting (imagine at a doctor’s surgery or a school assembly!). But if the general consensus is that it’s harmless and she’ll grow out of it, I’ll try to chill out.

Mine have said MUCH worse things than that out loud in the doctor's surgery. Mortifying at the time, but the world kept on turning.

OP as long as you don't make it into a 'thing', your daughter will get bored pretty quickly and move on.

Twinmaker · 20/03/2025 14:59

Yes, yes you are 😂 that's brilliant.

Unclench a bit 🤏

OctoberandApril · 20/03/2025 14:54

If it was a woman complaining about a man doing something so unfunny, the man would be called an idiot.

BigHeadBertha · 20/03/2025 14:51

I must be missing something because I don't get the joke. Why is it funny to walk in somewhere and yell "Housekeeping" when you're not a housekeeper?

Also, any simplistic joke gets stale quick so I can see hearing it over and over again getting a bit annoying anyway.

Or is it the demanding to be the center of attention with strangers that you find off-putting?

I don't know. If my husband kept doing something that I thought was stupid or cringey, I'd probably just tell him that and ask him to stop and he most likely would stop. Have you tried that?

pbopkg · 19/03/2025 15:37

Alright, maybe “nearly died” was a bit dramatic! But standing in M&S toilets while your four-year-old cheerfully announces herself to a stranger is definitely not my idea of a good time.

Do you not spend very much time with your 4 year old out and about? They do way more embarrassing stuff than this.
Eg say very very loudly 'mummy why has that lady got <insert distinctive facial/bodily feature here>' , or shout mummy something is coming out of my bottom!!! In the middle of a nice clothing store etc....
People do not expect 4 year olds not to say very random crap. They are four!

So. Many. Questions.

Picklepower · 20/03/2025 14:39

Wow my 6 year old has done much more embarrassing things than that. It's such a minor thing I can't really understand the angst. Even if you don't find it funny it's also not embarrassing, the person in the m&s toilets would have either found to funny or barely noticed, can't say I pay much attention to weird things other people's kids are saying

I think it's cute that your wife did that 💚 We should all do it IMO

For God's sake man grow up. Your wife is just titillating herself, your DD is doing the same. Let them have their moment of fun.

Christ alive, it's not like she's shouting 'Hello cunts', is it? Relax.

TheGoddessFrigg · 20/03/2025 14:21

If I heard a little girl says this as she entered the M&S toilets, I would find it really cute and it would brighten my day.

As did 'The Fart Monster'. Kids can be so hilarious and random!

MummaMummaMumma · 20/03/2025 14:16

I immediately thought of Home Alone.
Why is this embarrassing, even a little bit?

Iwannakeepondancing · 20/03/2025 14:03

This really isn’t embarrassing!

This morning she did it in M&S toilets and I nearly died of embarrassment.

Well here is a list of things my little girl has said, really loudly in public toilets and changing rooms, (including the mixed sex changing rooms at the swimming pool) which will hopefully make you feel less embarrassed:

"Mummy, you've got a really hairy front bum!"
"Mummy, you're wiping your bum!"
"Mummy, that's your booby! Milk comes out of there to feed [baby sister]!"
"Mummy, have you done a poo? Poo! It stinks! Ugh, why did you do such a stinky poo?!"
"Mummy, what's that thing for? [sanitary towel] Why has it got blood in it? Why do every month ladies get blood coming out of their front bum? What are you doing with that?? Mummy!!! Tell me!!!"
"Ugh you've got blood on your hands!! Mummy!! You've got blood on your hands!!!"

You've got off lightly so far.

See you this and raise you
"UGH WHATS THAT I DO NOT LIKE THAT HAIRY BIT" and 200 decibels in the loos in Claridges from DS.
