AIBU to continue turning in the school gate?

I drive my dd to school everyday and once I drop her off I turn around and drive home. I approach the back gate of the school and use this entrance to turn my car round so I can head back home.
The school have now put up a sign saying keep our children safe, no stopping, dropping off or turning in the entrance.
So where am I supposed to turn around? If I carry on I reach the front gate which is busier and has the busses. If I turn before I reach the back entrance I am doing a three point turn in busy school run traffic with lots of children walking and cycling.
So AIBU to say I am safest turning in the large double gate and ignoring the new sign?

Carry on until you come to a safer place to turn round. Past the back gate, past the front gate, well away from the school altogether.

Obviously.

Unless your school is in cul de sac on which case park further away , don't enter the cul de sac and WALK.

Dear oh dear. What is the MATTER with car drivers?

Matronic6 · 19/03/2025 15:07

I am struggling to believe this post is serious. I cannot understand how anyone can be lacking in self awareness to this extent.

Cattery · 19/03/2025 15:05

Walk. Talk about an entitled first world pile of crap

waits for OP to come back from the school rat run.

HansHolbein · 19/03/2025 15:02

@Marchsunshine Or a wind em up and watch em go argh!

Marchsunshine · 19/03/2025 15:01

This has got to be a reverse, surely.

No of course you can't ignore the sign.

BUT...why all schools don't have designated drop off points bewilders me.

This is a very good point. I suppose, however, that it may cause congestion (everyone would want to use the drop off zone at the same time). And dropping off is easy, but what about the reverse (pick up), which tends to take much longer and requires the car to be parked for longer... it would take up a lot of space (taken from where - a playground?) to facilitate a car park for enough cars and I can see why it's not considered worth it... It's a real problem these days, however, with people often living much further away from their children's school than in previous decades (when the schools were built).

Having said that, I've noticed that modern purpose built schools do tend to have a large parking area available, which does seem sensible.

My child's school is in the middle of a small town and we're all issued with parking permits for a local long stay car park which are valid for a 20 minute window at drop off and pick up time, which I think is great, but obviously doesn't/couldn't work everywhere!

zingally · 19/03/2025 14:59

Of course the sign doesn't mean you! You're special!

offyoufuck · 19/03/2025 14:52

There's this thing called "walking." 🙄

Notanother0nee · 19/03/2025 14:51

Your DD is in year 11 too…

not a chance this is legit @NortonBuns

Matsukaze · 19/03/2025 14:48

I suppose you could just carry on and squash some bystanders, which in turn would solve the problem of the school run being so busy and congested...

Or just park up somewhere appropriate and walk.

Sheeparelooseagain · 19/03/2025 14:48

"This can’t be serious…"

Especially with including driving home afterwards for good measure.

Poppins2016 · 19/03/2025 14:47

I live near a school and the sheer entitlement of parents makes me furious. I know that the school send out multiple communications over the course of the school year asking parents not to drive into the road I live in, but parents still insist on thinking it doesn't apply to them (who does it apply to, then)? They drive down the road to drop off, they park and wait to pick up, sit with the engine idling so we end up with exhaust fumes inside the house during the summer, turn, you name it... It is dangerous (with the amount of children milling about, plus people who can't drive thinking they own the road), antisocial and irritating. The really infuriating thing is that it's a secondary school, so the children are more than capable of getting to the school by themselves and don't need escorting to the door/car park at all 🤦‍♀️

Park further away and walk the last part with your child. It’s a no brainer. The school sign is there for a reason and imagine how you’d feel if there was an accident. Not worth it.

B1indEye · 19/03/2025 14:45

Crack on, you are more important than safety signs

Nodddy · 19/03/2025 14:45

Children die if you drop them more than 6 inches from the school gate.

They also get bullied if you don't drive a 4x4 when doing so.

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 19/03/2025 14:44

Noone is idiotic enough to even ask this, so its for sure a reverse.

This parent should park further away and walk their child in OR just walk their kid to school and leave the car at home.
If you know who the parent is, report them to the school so they can contact them directly. I bet their car is a huge 4x4 or a BMW.

Picotee · 19/03/2025 14:44

Can you drive round the block to get to where you need to be?

TheWonderhorse · 19/03/2025 14:44

Cutecattoes · 19/03/2025 14:43

Wtf is wrong with you?

mynameiscalypso · 19/03/2025 14:43

Why are (some) people such idiots when they drive their kids to school? We now have a traffic warden who stands outside at drop off time to stop parents parking in their usual ridiculous and dangerous ways and twice there have been incidents of parents hurling abuse at the traffic warden, in front of all the kids and teachers. Blows my mind.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/03/2025 14:42

What you need to do is PARK well away from the school at a place where it’s safe to turn and go back home, get out of the car, walk your child to the school, walk back again, turn and drive home.

Or drive well past the school, park and do the same, if there’s no where on your side of the school where it’s safe to park and turn.

Is there anyway to make a loop instead, after you’ve gone back to your car?

Times like this I think mumsnet needs 3 voting options:

YATD - You are a total dick

Waterlilysunset · 19/03/2025 14:40

OP are you joking? You don’t just do manoeuvres wherever you fancy bc it suits you. You keep driving until you find an appropriate place.
