To report my son as missing?

Wondering when to start panicking? DS 22, hasn't been home since Friday day time. He usually lets me know what's going on. It's not unusual for him to spend time at a friends for a day or two, however I've messaged his closest friends, no one's seen him since Friday. His phone been dead since Saturday morning. I know he's not a child, but he's my son and I'm concerned about his wellbeing. Should I report him as a missing person? Or am I overreacting? I just don't know what to do.

Please be kind, I am currently feel very fragile.

Nobody was "being nasty to you for trying to be kind and supportive".

Nobody.

You posted a "kind and supportive" comment, and somebody else posted a 100% non-agressive, non-critical reply telling you that he was already home.

The problem was that then you decided to go off on one, being sarky and hostile with your "And you felt the need to tell me this because ?".

An attitude you then doubled down on, to the point that one of your replies had to be deleted.

And it's that behaviour which has attracted all the criticism.

Whatever, great user name, just what I was thinking you were! Not sure what any of this had to do with you! Goodbye

Having been in similar shoes to you, I know how terrifying it is.
I’m so relieved for you that he’s back safe and sound 💐

hi everyone, he's home and unscathed. He's not in a great headspace and has asked for some counselling. We have quite a complex history with DV and I think he's being impacted by unresolved trauma.

I read some comments about gentle parent and how it can create lazy, complacent adults or something to that affect.

I am not a shouter, I don't like punitive measures and I trust my son. We have a good relationship and are very close. I don't feel and have never felt the need to breach his privacy as an adult until this weekend.
When he was jumped, he was with his girlfriend and they called me and let me know what had happened. We FaceTimed and I offered to go over, I wanted to be with him. I respected his decision to not have me there. I try to be respectful of his decisions and by no means claim to be a perfect parent. I really wasn't coming on here to have my parenting judged from snapshots of information.
Colleagues and friends of mine are police officers and I know how stretched services are. I didn't want to involve them unless it was absolutely necessary and all other avenues of enquiry had been explored. I was right in my decision and my actions yesterday have resulted in him coming home,
for what it's worth.

I can tell you that I was worried about a million things and had concerns about his welfare last night. Felt like an awful mum and in those moments, which I believe we alll have, I did not want or need affirmation of my darkest fears and failings from strangers on the internet.

I am going to remove this thread at 8pm but wanted to thank those posters that were supportive and kind. It really helped, as I said I needed unbiased opinions so thank you so much.

i hope you all have a peaceful, uneventful evening. I will not be responding to any more posts but am appreciative of the concern felt for my family and I.

So glad he's home &. opened up to you.

MizzThang · 23/03/2025 13:10

Let’s not shame them for not being sure if it would be considered a ‘waste of police time’, etc?!

How is YOUR reply helpful ?

purpleme12 · 22/03/2025 23:02

Do you mean an update further to the ones already given?

Because I don't think a further update is needed really

Mummytotwosprogs · 22/03/2025 22:35

Do you have an update?

IamMoodyBlue · 22/03/2025 20:35

So pleased and relieved that DS is safely home. I hope everything works out well.
Best wishes

Your post didn’t portray that though, did it? You only spoke about your mum punching you in the face for being late home.

People can only make assumptions on what they are told.

No matter how you dress it up, most mothers don’t go around punching their kids in the face.

Edited

Thank you for posting a sensible response.

My god you nasty mumsnetters are like a pack of hyenas! I was busy but wanted to be kind and show her some support ! It’s clearly a crime now among you non-perfect idiots! 🤷‍♀️

I think maybe the incident was described badly? It also made no sense to me but I think that pp meant her mum thought she was out and the person coming home was an intruder??

My mum was loving and kind and supportive and sweet.
She was also very beautiful.
She freaked herself out on one single occasion.
We both learned a lesson that night.
Lol at your “violent thugs.” My mum isn’t alive any more, but she’d laugh her arse off too.
I just love how people take one single experience from a complete stranger’s life and judge their entire existence on it.
Sooo very fair and balanced.
Sooo very you, evidently (see how easy that is?).

So why post such an unfair and unbalanced comment? You deliberately portrayed your 'loving and kind and supportive and sweet' mother as a violent thug. Probably best you delete it and consider what made you be so nasty about this paragon.

Most of us - mercifully - were raised by loving caring Mothers. Not violent thugs.

I don't think at any point I was 'happily posting on mumsnet', chilling watching TV or any other variation of uncaring, in different or otherwise. I just want to stress that I was trying to be measured and respectful with my approach to the situation. Everyone's boundaries and approaches to situations differs, that's what's great about using a platform like Mumsnet. It also makes the world wonderful and interesting.

For clarity, views differed greatly between our loved ones ranging from call the police immediately to I never told me mum where I was at 22, he's absolutely fine. Hard when instinctively I was in a panic and unable to think clearly, getting some external perspective felt like a sensible step. It's okay if some people don't agree with my approach, I wasn't looking for validation or consent from other users to post on mumsnet.

Again, I just want to thank people for being so supportive, it's been quite overwhelming. Apparently it's not a case of simply deleting a post and I didn't want to ignore anyone who took the time to read my post and then respond. So to those who posted, irrespective of your tone, thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hope he's ok I'm sure you have reported by now but yes definitely do. I understand that your son may be upset with you reporting but it's never worth the risk of not reporting even though he's an adult. But my sister had a breakdown and disappeared for a few days it was freezing at the time she was found but with police help it was a couple of days she was about 40 at the time but vulnerable. She then got the help she needed too the police were really good actually. Hope you can update us OP really hope all is ok.
