BLOODY Tesco wouldn’t deliver my food shop

Thaer · 18/03/2025 14:37

So apparently they now do “think 25” for all deliveries. EVEN for ones with no age restricted products. The young lad who delivered said he couldn’t give me my shopping. I left my bag in DH’s car last night so had no id. Apparently a facetime call with my husband showing my driver’s license wasn’t good enough (I’ve misplaced my passport which is bloody brilliant). I’ll take the compliment as a 32 yo. But how stupid! There was only food in my shop. When he asked I assumed my husband had added on a few beers but no just food. I’m not blaming the delivery boy as he’s just following rules but there is no common sense. I get it if you order cigarettes, alcohol etc. But not veggies and dog food ffs. If I went to the shop and bought the same stuff I would be asked to produce I’d!

RIDICULOUS

It has always been the case-I worked as a driver for Asda 10+ years ago and Challenge 25 was a thing then on the whole order whether there was age restricted items or not.

Springbirds · 18/03/2025 20:18

That’s simply not true. It’s applies only to restricted items

It is true….

All goods must be received by an adult aged 18 years or over. If proof of age is not available, the goods will not be delivered to you.

it isn’t just age related products it’s the whole delivery

CountryQueen · 18/03/2025 20:28

The fact you are calling a man with a job and a driving licence a “delivery boy” suggests he is relatively young and new to the job. I suspect he wants to keep it. He is also unlikely to be able to easily tell the difference between a 25 year old and 31 year old woman so is operating on a better safe than sorry basis.

Springbirds · 18/03/2025 20:18

Coconutter24 · 18/03/2025 18:24

A complaint for what? Because OP didn’t realise they had an age policy on online orders and doesn’t like it? All supermarkets have this policy, they will only deliver to age 18 plus

Well, you'd find me strange then. I have no ID. I don't go on foreign holidays, so I don't have a passport and I don't drive, so I don't have a driving licence. It's a pain in the neck, but, I honestly don't have photo ID - I could show my birth certificate but, of course, that's in my maiden name, so not much use, and I could show my wedding licence, but that doesn't come with a photo. I don't think I should have to pay for either a passport or a driver's licence when I would make no use of them, just so that I can prove I am who I say I am.

You can get a citizen ID card https://www.citizencard.com/what-is-a-citizencard

What is a CitizenCard? - UK photo ID card

CitizenCard is an official UK ID card and proof of age. The photo ID displays police & SIA logos and bears PASS hologram endorsed by Home Office, retailers & airlines.

You responded to me and you’re incorrectly claiming you don’t currently need a photo ID for all those things.

No I wasn’t. I was claiming that I have not needed these forms of id this century. I therefore couldn’t prove I was over 18 if I was required to by Tesco.

CantStopMoving · 18/03/2025 19:22

Gettoachiro · 18/03/2025 15:52

Same at ASDA. Challenge 25, if you look under 25 you are asked for ID and if you can't provide any you don't get your shopping! Even if it's just cornflakes!

Along with restricted items, I was told it was due to the transfer of money online. It does say on the receipt that someone 18 or over has to be in to accept the shopping.

The oldest person i've asked for ID turned out to be 40 🤣 and a couple of customers over the years have got really peed off with me when I didn't ask them for ID...they looked a lot older than 25!

Ha ha I remember how upset I was when travelling the US when they stopped asking me for ID! They ID anyone up to 40 most of the time! It was then I realised I had passed my prime!

I know. As I said, it's a ridiculous policy.

I was responding to previous posters saying it was contrary to not have photo id. I’ve never needed any, and the only thing I own with my face on it is my bus pass.

Right now, in the modern world you need photo ID to vote in person, sell property, take a tenancy agreement, use government childcare funding, open a bank account with almost any high street bank, change employers, to apply for a passport for a child, this list goes on… this is all factual information, go and attempt to do any of these things with no photo identification and you will not be able to. You not needing to do this very basic list of things isn’t relevant and doesn’t change the fact that they need photo ID.

Sainsburys also have think 25. My husband is a driver. In your situation, he could have lost his job if he'd given you the delivery without seeing ID in person. Sainsburys do random checks and even have secret shoppers who look under 25 and have 'lost their ID'. It doesn't matter what's in the delivery BTW.

It's a slightly ridiculous policy in that it's up to the driver whether they think you're under 25 but it's there to ensure tesco don't break the law. DH says that he only asks if the customer clearly looks around 17/18 but sometimes its very had to tell and he'd prefer to stay employed.

I have had all these things since well before all this photo is nonsense came in. Until I received my free bus pass I had no photo id at all. I have done nothing requiring id since the last century, prior to my free bus pass.

cocoromo · 18/03/2025 18:36

But why tho?? That’s the issue….the policy makes no sense if there are no age restricted items??

A lot of retailers you need to be 18 to shop at for what reason I don’t know. The only things I can think of for Tesco's policy is because to shop with them online you have to be 18 and to possibly cover them incase of any age restricted items, the drivers do know if they have an age restricted item on the delivery note. Which is fine but common sense needs to come in as well if someone is clearly over 18 (or 25) then it is a bit silly

Gogogo12345 · 18/03/2025 18:40

Thaer · 18/03/2025 14:43

Surely there is some sort of alert that Tesco could put at the top of each order list to alert the driver to any restricted items. Surely that was the case prior. Would not be hard to do at all.

Well that's certainly the case on Deliveroo just eat deliveries. The app informs you that is is needed

EveryKneeShallBow · 18/03/2025 18:39

Josiezu · 18/03/2025 17:18

I just find it a very odd decision from an adult, there are many, many scenarios beyond driving or travel that require photo ID. Bank accounts, voting, changing jobs, nursery funding, selling a home, renting a home. I mean the list goes on.

This makes no sense if there was no over 18 products in the shop?
I can literally send my 13 year old for food at local tesco, I can’t see the difference with home delivery?
the only reason you should need ID would be for tabacco/ knives/ alcohol ect.
agree op - I would find that annoying and ridiculous, the driver must have misunderstood when he was supposed to ask?

ThreeMagicNumber · 18/03/2025 18:25

I had a Tesco delivery today, I was on a work call so my 15 year old got the door and this wasn't mentioned at all?

Coconutter24 · 18/03/2025 18:24

toomuchfaff · 18/03/2025 15:18

Put a complaint into the store, and if it is a policy, then shift to another store. Or don't, and be aware the new policy..

ElbowsUpRising · 18/03/2025 18:24

I wonder if something in the shopping was incorrectly classified as an age restricted product? I had a right battle in Tesco once when the cashier informed me I needed to provide ID in order to buy chicken tikka chunks. She was adamant that with no ID I wasn’t having them. We carefully inspected the ingredients and both agreed there was no alcohol in them but she wasn’t having it. I’ve had the same with a different normal grocery item in Tesco years ago as well. Both times I had to ask for a manager to come and sort it.

Manchestermummax3 · 18/03/2025 18:22

I had my own flat at 17.... I remember being refused those long matches to light my cooker. (Fair enough, I was under 18) It was sandwiches for dinner that night 🤣

Yellowhammer09 · 18/03/2025 18:21

The Think 25 thing is one of the most ridiculous campaigns we've ever had.

McGregor33 · 18/03/2025 18:20

They started doing this around 2 years ago, it is frustrating but my kids always laugh when they ask for id. Apparently at 31 its apparent im ancient 🤣🤣

tealandteal · 18/03/2025 18:15

This is also the case when you click and collect, they apply “think 25” so you have to look over 25 or prove you are over 18. I drove there with no ID but luckily DH had some on him.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/03/2025 18:13

Boredlass · 18/03/2025 14:43

“I find it stranger that an adult in the UK only has one form of ID”

I only have my driving license. No interest in a passport

I have neither. Can't drive for medical reasons and my passport expired with one 3 day trip taken in the first three months - nobody at work in a position to confirm knowing me has been there quite long enough to do it, either.

Fortunately, most delivery drivers accept white hair and a work pass as evidence that I'm a grown up with a name they can enter into their doobrey.
