To be upset that fellow holiday goer told me I'm too old for my hair?

I'm rising 60 and have been obese all my life, have just got it under control, gone on a glow up and have decided to Fuuckit and I've headed off on my holiday of a lifetime.

I've spent most of today with another solo traveller and quite enjoyed her company, but am fully aware she's from a more forthright culture than me. (A close friend from home is also this nationality so I'm fully aware of this conversational style).

As we parted company she said that she felt she had to tell me that at my age I should be considering getting my hair cut to a more age appropriate length.

I fricking love my hair, my hairdresser has been with me through literal thick and thin, and had particularly encouraged me nurturing my length after The Bad Bad Bob Incident of October 23.

Low self confidence and self esteem through being morbidly obese for 30 years doesn't lend itself to resilience, so I'm now in my room trying to distract myself and win the day back to no avail.

Aibu to be upset or am I a soft numpty?

@RitaAndFrank I've just looked it's October 22 when I lost my rag and told hairdressers to chap it right off, and dye it dark! So apologies - 30 moths to grow it long!

That’s still great compared to me 😊
Have a lovely rest of holiday 🍹

Cherrysoup · 18/03/2025 07:12

I’d be equally forthright and tell her to do one. Rude cow. I bet you look fabulous!

arcticpandas · 18/03/2025 07:04

This is personal. My hair is shorter at 45 than at 35 but that's because it's quality has gone downhill. Dh's aunt is 80 and she's got long, blond (coloured ofcourse) hair and she looks fabulous. She also wears jeans and Nice tops and looks so much younger than her age.
I admit I do find it ridiculous when older women 50+ wear ultra low cleavage tops with glitter coloured letters saying sexy. It's just an oxymoron. You can be sexy at 60 but it needs to be done with elegance, not vulgarity.

That statement is just as rude and ageist as the original statement. I’m about to turn 59. I have never in my life worn a low cut top with Sexy written on it because it’s not my thing but I do not need someone telling me what I can or cannot wear at my age and how to be sexy.
As it happens I would have thought “vulgar” isn’t sexy at any age.

pizzaHeart · 18/03/2025 07:11

She is mean bitch, she is trying to put you down for your confidence or maybe it’s just her personality trait, some people are like this.
Also think about this logically - there is no “age appropriate length” concept. It’s just stupid. My hair is not great. I was never able to have them longer than a bit below shoulders. You have great hair and have them long. It’s all about hair , it’s not about age.

Onelifeonly · 18/03/2025 07:11

Reminds me of being a teenager and girls bitching because someone's mum still wore jeans at 40 or whatever. Unsolicited opinions are not required!

Treesarenotforeating · 18/03/2025 07:10

She’s just a jealous bint
but I hate long hair so it’s short (early60’s) and falling out
who gives a cack what others think
your hair is your hair where it how you like there’s no age requirement

REDB99 · 18/03/2025 07:09

Ignore her OP, you’ve done brilliantly to lose the weight and to be travelling on your own. You love your hair! Don’t let a stranger’s insensitive comment ruin your time away. Chin up, confidence on! Enjoy the rest of your time away.

Dutch?
(or Germany or South African?)

Shake it off. It’s a cultural mismatch. You don’t have to accept her assessment as anything other than “wow, that’s forthright, but I don’t agree.”

Ahaha bang on the guilders 😂

Yes, you’re being a bit of a numpty for letting a total stranger lay an axe to the roots of your self-esteem.your choices are Yoir choices. What you yhink of your hair is more important than what a total stranger met on holiday thinks of your hair.

I’m not quite “older” (🙄) yet but it will be a cold day in hell before I ever chop my hair to a “more suitable length for my age”.

You and your hair sound gorgeous OP. Congrats on your glow up, don’t let this knock your confidence.

mrschocolatte · 18/03/2025 07:06

I cut off my long hair in my early 20s and kept my hair short until lockdown. I hit 50 in lockdown and decided I wanted long hair and have been growing it ever since. It’s down past my shoulder blades now and I look after it with regular trips to the hairdresser. I absolutely love it. It’s given me a much needed boost at a time when my face and body have physically changed in a way I don’t like due to menopause. For me, it’s a way of taking back a bit of control as I go through all these changes so my advice is to ignore the comment and remember how good your hair makes you feel. That’s all that counts.

MoneyPieceNotMoneyShot · 18/03/2025 07:05

Gosh thank you all.

You're jolly nice heartwarmers.

@Yoheresthestory actually I didn't, I'm really ashamed about my flabby shabby past so I keep it quiet.

Isn't this a case of "if you've got nothing nice to say, say nothing." Ignore! Your hairdresser likes it and she's the expert. Most importantly, you like it.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/03/2025 07:03

People say that to me all the time I have waist length grey hair in great condition. I'm always being told I need to cut it but luckily I don't care what anyone else thinks.
I have no intention of joining the rows of grey cauliflower hair ladies with short perms.
Enjoy your lovely hair. Ignore rude people.

WinterFoxes · 18/03/2025 07:03

You are being a soft humpty. Because it's her opinion, not a fact. She may well have lots of style choices you disagree with but culturally you keep your opinion to yourself. Use her bluntness as a tool to practise your resilience on.
'You're too old for that hair'
'No such thing. I love my hair/ I ignore ageism and wear my hair how I like it.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 18/03/2025 07:01

You sound amazing, and for what it's worth, I LOVE the idea of having hair length (or shoes, clothes, tattoos, ideas, hobbies, piercings etc...) 'inappropriate for one's age'!

ShriekingTrespasser · 18/03/2025 07:01

You have your hair as long as you want it. Her limited views and narrow mindedness don’t matter.

FOJN · 18/03/2025 07:01

There is only one opinion that matters and it's this one:

"I fricking love my hair"

Women are so conditioned to make other people's opinion of them more important than their own; refuse to do that.

There is being forthright and being rude, your fellow traveller is being rude.

Ignore her and continue to enjoy your holiday.

Birdseyetrifle · 18/03/2025 07:00

I would tell her this is 2025 and not the 1950’s where women were told to get their hair cut short. What a very old fashioned view point.

Ignore her an enjoy your holiday. She’s a dick and jealous!

FannyBawz · 18/03/2025 06:58

I’m 51 and my hair is waist length -fuck her!

NeedToChangeName · 18/03/2025 06:57

She wasn't forthright. She was rude and sounds deeply unpleasant

RobinHeartella · 18/03/2025 06:57

Ps I also have a bad bad bob incident from my past where I ugly-cried in an expensive Paris hair salon. This was over ten years ago and I remember it like yesterday.

I'll be long haired till the day I die!
