I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

You can’t use tomatoes someone in bed 3 streets away might have a tomato allergy 🙈😂😂😂

I was going to suggest a bag of flour, but, y’know, gluten…

If you don’t mind the cost of the egg I’d say this was a good approach. You’re not damaging their car. They deserve a fright, selfish gits.

But if it’s not the same people, you’re still going to get disturbed nights.

Maybe talk to the neighbours to see how they feel. And ask the council if there are options. Or community policing? I think you can ask without putting a complaint in and having to declare anything should you want to sell up.

Could a motion detection light be put up that pings on in the early hours (might be as annoying?). Resident bollards? Big board telling people to piss off?

I remember a book from primary school in which a farmer was so fed up with his dog outside howling at the moon at night, that he threw his alarm clock at the dog, who thought the clock was the moon; so he ate the clock. One lick, one swallow, and the moon was gone for ever. The dog was then ringing the following morning.

Of course you're being unreasonable. It's actually criminal damage. You could have dented the car and egg white is a bugger to get off paintwork

And the problem is?

The more a bugger to get it off the better

Catsandcannedbeans · 17/03/2025 15:21

Jesus Christ it was an egg, not boiling oil. Don’t stress about them knowing it was you if it’s a block of flats, you’re probably safe. Maybe look into official complain channels, even tho in my experience that fails most of the time. If it was me I’d probably have launched something at them too, especially if I was sleep deprived.

That was probably the idea. She’s not going to throw a soft, foamy car cleaning sponge.

DaxieTaxi · 17/03/2025 15:08

I once threw my shoes out of the window at a pheasant that used to come into my garden and ‘clank’ every morning at 5am so I can completely understand why you did it. It didn’t deter the pheasant, but my house mate (who used to leave the house before me in the mornings) was understandably astonished to find my shoes on the front lawn on her way to work! When I explained why, the next time she saw it, she managed to get it by the throat but didn’t have the heart to throttle it. It never came back though so that could be a last resort in your situation (and before anyone hands my arse to me, I’m obviously joking).

CactusSammy · 17/03/2025 14:33

OP, I'm proud of you.

It might not have been the best idea, but I bet you have been walking around with a smile on your face all day.

I think you should get the neighbours involved next time though. I imagine a coordinated multi egg assault would fix the problem in no time!

Is it private or council housing? If it’s council, you should definitely contact your housing officer and if you know your neighbours well enough, get them to do the same so the HO takes notice.

Also find out who your local Councillor is and you’ll easily be able to get their email address and write to them. Councillors are usually keen to keep the electorate happy.

Also contact your local neighbourhood policing team - tell them there’s drug-dealing etc going on and they should be interested.

If there are double yellow lines, the Council should be enforcing no stopping, although obviously there won’t be wardens out and about late at night.

This. Excellent advice.
But also work on perfecting your aim.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/03/2025 14:16

Well I hope it made you feel better. I can understand your frustration.

Don't approach them face to face, it wouldn't be worth it.

Panama2 · 17/03/2025 14:15

As it seems eggs could be deemed weapons of mass destruction how about a pressure washer or are you too far away. Unless there are people allergic to water that is🤔

Isthiswhatmenthink · 17/03/2025 14:13

BatchCookBabe · 17/03/2025 13:26

Yeah, I'm in the 'what a stupid reckless thing to do' camp. Not clever, not funny. Get a white noise machine FGS...

I am LOLing though, at the amount of posters on here saying 'YABU - you need to practice your aim, aim better, you need to have a better aim.' ROFL, LOL, Tee hee.' Acting like they're the first to say it, and thinking they're jolly hilarious! 😆 (Even though multiple posters have already said it.) See also: the hysterically funny 'ooh that's eggsellent OP!'

As has been said, I would be very worried about retaliation. People who hang around at 3am, acting anti-socially and like dickheads, are NOT the sort of people to say 'OMG she threw an egg at us, let's go home, and never return, and make sure we are always in by 10pm from now on.'

You may have opened a lion's cage @EggVigilante Good luck!

A Red Lion’s cage?

I get what you’re saying and I’m not trying to be unduly/ disproportionately alarmist, I understand this is not the main point of the thread. Trust me I also understand all the other risks eg the bag spills you allude to! I spend every day asssessing risks like these. But in a country where ‘egging’ is a thing I don’t think it does any harm to try to reduce this being ‘normalised’ (for want of a better word) - yes it’s not an every day occurrence but nonetheless the OP reached for an egg, not anything else. When I grew up egging houses was a thing on Halloween etc, and remember John Prescott? All I’m asking is that people consider not throwing eggs. As I said, and in my subsequent post, I have every sympathy with the OP. It’s difficult to read tone in these messages but we are all allowed an opinion - and mine is chiefly that people who act like the yobs OP refers to are the worst. But also that some
of the comments and jokes on this friend are nasty and unnecessary. Not sure that my relatively mild single comment mentioning egg allergy deserved you telling me I didn’t need to make it or ‘strongly’ highlight it but there we are - it’s not up to me what other people post. If it makes me po-faced, so be it.

I’d imagine more eggs fall from birds’ nests than are lobbed around by insomniacs. Do those also pose a risk?

I should think as long as severely allergic people don’t lick cars and pavements, or stand under trees with nesting birds, the risk is nigh-on non-existent, surely?

waitingquietly · 17/03/2025 14:08

Not at all surprised that you reacted as you did OP - hopefully that’s seen off at least one yob .

I do think those having a go at you about food allergies are being unreasonable ( and I say that as someone who’s DH carries two EpiPens where ever he goes- it’s our responsibility nobody else’s)

CeffylCoch · 17/03/2025 14:07

If you’re worried about the egg damaging the car start saving your old tea bags up and throw them instead 🤣

Roseyposey11 · 17/03/2025 14:04

madamweb · 17/03/2025 09:08

It's not funny. Eggs can cause lethal allergic reactions. Finding throwing food funny is grim and ignorant

Absolutely. She definitely needs to improve her aim and hit the car with the ignorant tw5t in, next time

Emmz1510 · 17/03/2025 13:55

I don’t really blame you for doing this OP! Don’t be too hard on yourself. I mean, don’t do it again or anything. You might accidentally kill some poor yobbo with an egg allergy (?🤷‍♀️). Yeah, and I’m sure all the drinking and drug taking that is probably going on is perfectly safe….
You could report to the council. I doubt you are the only one bothered by this and they may be able to issue a dispersion order or whatever it’s called.
If that doesn’t work, foam earplugs from screwfix. Work like a charm.

That was an idiotic thing to do and not at all as funny as you were hoping it would come across on the thread. You're just as bad as the car yob, if not worse.

Of course she’s not.

You're quite the rebel OP, aren't you! 🤣

hazelnutvanillalatte · 17/03/2025 13:51

YANBU! A car full of idiots parked on our street one night around 3/4am and they put a speaker on top and were blasting music loud enough to feel the vibrations on the first floor. I wanted to chuck something at them but was scared it would get caught on the cameras, police eventually broke it up but they were out there for over an hour

Kuretake · 17/03/2025 13:44

BatchCookBabe · 17/03/2025 13:35

Oh, they will come back! (Though the OP will say that they didn't.) Wink

Are you on the side of the yob playing music at 3am? This sounds like you're hoping he returns and gets some revenge.
