US democracy is about to die

... So many indicators for this, the most recent is Trump calling for the DoJ to go after his enemies:

Dear American friends, I hope you find a peaceful way out of this. As for us here, I can only hope we keep the contagion at bay.

“I don’t care what the judges think” answers the question posed by the OP.

I can't see how any of these checks and balances will work if he just...ignores them?

And the US largely as a populous seems fine with it. Anyone who is speaking out doesn't seem to be doing so collectively. I'm unsure if they're waiting for him to make a catastrophic mistake or they're all too scared to challenge?

He's got a well-documented affinity with the wrestling world. Early fan of kayfabe.

They have quite a bit in common then

I did point out that it was a coincidence :)
I still think it's disturbing and revealing of a desire to move fast and quickly secure the maximum amount of power in a minimum amount of time. I bloody well hope that the US is nothing like 30s Germany but every day seems to bring a new announcement confirming the direction of travel. It's a one-way journey right now unless something happens to stop this train.

And today he welcomes Conor McGregor, the mixed martial arts fighter recently found civilly liable for rape back in his native Ireland, as a St. Patrick’s Day guest of honor at the White House.

Just a quick reminder of how history unfolded a little less than 100 years ago in Germany: On March 23, 1933, the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, which allowed Hitler to enact laws without the approval of the Reichstag or the President for a period of four years. This act effectively gave Hitler the power to rule by decree.
Sounds familiar? Hitler was democratically appointed Chancellor on Jan 30, 1933. That meant that about 53 days into his mandate, he secured full power. When was the CR passed? Oh yes... 53 days into this regime. Just a coincidence of course, but a bloody disturbing parallel.

While both Germany and the United States have faced democratic crises, American democracy has proven fundamentally stronger due to its constitutional durability, federalist system, entrenched democratic norms, and historical resilience.

The collapse of the Weimar Republic was a consequence of constitutional weaknesses and a lack of democratic tradition, whereas the United States has successfully weathered numerous crises without succumbing to authoritarian rule. While vigilance is always required to safeguard democracy, the U.S. remains far more structurally resilient than Germany in 1933.

Quite. He boasts about grabbing women by the pussy but hey, he supports single sex lavatories. What a prince.

Very telling.
It's just destruction, destruction and more destruction.

President Donald Trump's recent executive order to dismantle the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees Voice of America (VOA), has raised significant concerns about the suppression of pro-democratic press. This action aligns with a broader pattern of measures perceived as attempts to control or silence media organizations that provide independent news coverage.

Dismantling of Voice of America
Established during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda, VOA has served as a vital source of unbiased news, especially in regions with limited press freedom. The executive order led to over 1,300 VOA employees being placed on administrative leave, effectively halting its operations. Critics argue that this move undermines efforts to counter foreign propaganda and restricts access to unbiased information globally.

Broader Actions Against Media Organizations
The executive order also targets other agencies, including Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia, which have been instrumental in providing independent journalism in authoritarian regimes. The dissolution of these entities is seen as a retreat from promoting democracy and press freedom worldwide.

Pattern of Retaliation Against the Press
The administration's actions reflect a broader pattern of retaliation against media organizations. For instance, the Associated Press (AP) faced punitive measures after refusing to adopt the administration's unilateral renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This led to AP reporters being barred from official events, raising concerns about attempts to bully the press into compliance and suppress dissenting voices.

Chilling Effect on Free Speech
These measures contribute to a chilling effect on free speech, as they signal potential repercussions for media outlets that challenge or criticize government actions. Such actions may lead to self-censorship among journalists and hinder the public's access to diverse viewpoints, essential for a functioning democracy.

the executive order to dismantle USAGM and its entities, along with other retaliatory actions against media organizations, raises significant concerns about the suppression of pro-democratic press. These measures not only limit the dissemination of unbiased information but also pose a threat to the foundational principles of free speech and press freedom in democratic societies.

Trump is silencing pro-democratic press.

He's signed an order to strip back federally funded news organisation Voice of America, which was set up during World War Two to counter Nazi propaganda.

I wonder how MAGAs feel about their tax dollars paying for Trump's frequent golf trips to his own resorts. He overcharges security to stay in his hotels by 300%.

"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"

Well, they're from the party that always bitches and moans about taxes being too high, but they're suddenly drooling over the prospect of a 50% tax being added to goods because they're foreign.

So...y'know, you gotta assume they're cool with it. Just fire a bunch of disabled people, it'll even out.

I think that will be Mark Carney.

I didn't have any glasses on, and read that first as 'Mariah Carey" 😂

While it's easy to jump to conclusions, the idea that "plans for the subversion of the next election have already been made" is speculative and lacks concrete evidence. Just because certain actions or statements may raise concern doesn't mean there's an orchestrated plot to undermine the election.

Unfortunately I think Trump has clearly stated his intentions. We should always take him seriously when he appears facetious. 'You will only need to vote this once' he said. When someone tells you who they are...
I do get your earlier point about defeatism, but a resilient democracy does not mean it's unbreakable. The threats are unprecedented. We can't forget that he's got much of Silicon Valley on his side. The tech bros. The ones he said are 'very good with all that computer stuff'. Again, childish talk hiding a very serious point about technology being put to the use of a particular agenda.

Recognizing and addressing these issues is crucial for restoring faith in democratic institutions and ensuring that future administrations uphold the principles that sustain our democracy.

Who, exactly, remains in the government with the ability to recognise these issues and the power to address them?

Democracy isn’t some fragile bird waiting to be caged it’s a beast that adapts, evolves, and devours those who underestimate it. Power shifts, leaders rise and fall, but the system endures because it was built to survive ambition, scandal, and even the occasional demagogue.

Now, some will argue that it all falls apart when a President starts ignoring court orders. But power is never absolute, and defiance breeds its own consequences. Presidents who play king soon find out that even the most stacked judiciary has limits and so does the patience of the people.

The beauty of democracy isn’t in its perfection it’s in its resilience. Let the doubters wring their hands; the republic stands, as it always has, unshaken by the tempests of politics

Democracy really isn't resillient. It generally lasts for as long as it takes for people to start voting for leaders who promise voters everything they could possibly want, leading the nation into collapse in the process.
