To think the average Londoner is better looking?

My late wife was from London and was gorgeous, I'm neither. So from this small sample size I have to agree

So how do you know they aren't tourists from overseas or visitors form other areas or born and brought somwhere else and live their now? Do they wear badges 'London made me beautiful'?

No, there are just more people per square mile. So you will see more good looking people as a result.

Not sure it is strictly true but if so due to having more cash?

I did see some very well put together women yesterday (I was on a coach coming back into London so through Sloane Square etc etc to Victoria. Of course they may not have been London Ladies or even English.....

I don’t think Londoners are in general more or less friendly than other parts of the country. How they behave on public transport isn’t a good indicator as I’ve been on plenty of trains and buses elsewhere and it’s no paragon of polite society. True in London you’ll get shoved if you stand in ticket gates, faffing to out your wallet away or in front of doors opening on the tube if people are getting off. Because there isn’t time to have a conversation about it. People aren’t used to the crowds so their faffing actually inconveniences and endangers others.

It’s hard to have a conversation in the tube as often loud and you may need to move down. And as for trying to stop us in the street to ask a question… we’ll pretty much assume you’re trying to sell something or we’re in a rush. I have and do help people and having lived in London for years am struck by how friendly people are generally when they’re not in a rush, like most places I think. But it’s a huge city and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by crowds so we have coping strategies - move out of the way, walk on left, walk quickly, be ready to pay/ tap Oyster card, just generally get on with it, lots of people right behind you.

I do notice that people are mostly slimmer and younger centrally. And even in my zone 4 area pretty well dressed and put together but certainly not overly smart. Well groomed rather than flashy.

i notice in other regions of the UK and Ireland where I’m from, a lot more obesity, more homogeneous dressing and sportswear as generalisation but regions vary and the clothing is often appropriate for the region - eg waterproofs in Yorkshire and what people are doing.

I don't agree, sorry. Only a small percentage of Brits have the sort of trend setting style that you refer to. The majority do not.
The other things that I have mentioned are factual eg weight and poverty. These things are well known to cause health problems and a decline in appearance.
London is much more multi cultural than many parts of the UK, hence my comment about mixed race.

Ditto! I’ve been googling ‘northern women style’ since my weekend realisation as I feel like I now certainly look more Liverpool than London! But it’s hard to put your finger on the difference exactly as there are many young women in London with bouncy blow dries and ‘done’ brows, especially in the pretentious areas across the West.

The laid back edgy style to me is more East London and I’ve certainly never fitted in too well there.

Those Londoners you're seeing might actually be commuters from the home counties and the suburbs

I lost 3 stone in the first year I moved to London just from all the walking and not driving. My energy went up, bought better clothes, also dressed much ‘edgier’ as you can literally wear what you like/dye your hair how you like and no one even gives you a second glance.
Also I’ve lived literally everywhere in the UK and London is the friendliest place I’ve ever lived.

I've given up on Lenor as it never leaves a nice smell (or any smell in fact) on my clothes.

Off topic but when did scenting every aspect of your house and person become a thing? Is it the Mrs Hinch effect?!

It's probably to do with affluence.
If you are visiting London for a couple of days you are likely to be in areas inhabited by the very wealthy or those who choose to spend their time in very trendy areas.
I'm sure if you went to Tesco's on a Saturday morning in an average residential area, or outside school dropoff on a normal day you would see a normal range of people.

This is exactly it. The London way of dressing is all about not looking you’re trying, and most definitely not looking like you’re trying hard!

London style is definitely more casual and undone than other cities in the UK. I moved out of London a decade ago but I can’t quite shake my London attitude to dressing up. It’s not so much a lack of making an effort, but more a horror of looking like you’ve worked too hard to make an effort, IYSWIM. The complete opposite to Liverpool, for example, where the girls look fabulous but in a very different way!

Oh and I looove people watching on the morning commute in certain tube stations… Love seeing gorgeous young women really embrace the fashion and carry looks with confidence, and that being their normal.

They do dress casually… Depending on where you are, too.

I’m a pretentious person so when I go to London, it’ll be a private members club/ finance type setting, and I know men will still be in suits, so jeans and trainers won’t cut it. Same with theatre, jeans and trainers is fine but I actually want it to feel special, it’s my one excuse to dress up. Another reason why I might go into London is high end shopping/ browsing, so again it feels better to look the part among the Chinese and Arabs.

Now. On my weekend train down from The North, most women had blow dries, makeup, nails done, nice clothes… I was asking myself if im a proper northern girl now as I’d done the same! It’s definitely not a very ‘London’ look, I’d say the average London girl is way more edgy.

But we certainly headed down and brought the average up, not down 😉 Also remember that the average tourist visiting London must be quite wealthy due to travel cost alone, so think they bring the average up, not down 😂 Stay dressy and flashy 😉 I genuinely sometimes go to London to be able to go to places where being dressed up ‘fits in’, as it’s just a bit weird flashing your designer dress and bag at Costa in Stoke-on-Trent 😋

I think you're right OP - particularly if you're talking about central London and people who are on their way to/from work.

I live just outside London and I would say that most people I know take good care of themselves. They have the money, which definitely helps, but they exercise and make an effort to look well-groomed and well-dressed. And let's face it, if you are a woman with a professional job, looking good is an essential part of that job, but many of the men also take care with their appearance.

My DPs live in a rural area and it's obvious that looking good is not something that many people I see there care about. It's not just about wearing practical clothes for a rural environment (which I totally get), it's about much lower standards of personal grooming and dress and it's very obvious.

Baptisms take place as part of the Sunday service in this church, and there were 6 babies being baptised. I didn’t know anyone else there apart from my own family and godparents.

In central London, most people will be on the lunch hour from work or if not working then meeting friends and will be dressed accordingly.

But I do agree that walking everywhere and using public transport is a great way to not put on weight!
