Sausage dog kills baby

crumby23 · 15/03/2025 17:00

Sorry if there’s already a thread on this. Absolutely tragic story today about a sausage dog getting into a small baby’s crib and killing it. The parents knew it was aggressive and had taken precautions to keep the dog separate but on this occasion had forgotten.
Unfortunately the story is bringing out all the XL bully morons who are somehow using this to justify the fact that ‘fighting dogs’ are no greater risk than small dogs. Why are people so stupid?

I agree. I don't understand it. The UK has gone crazy over dogs. So many people treat their dogs as children and insist on taking them everywhere with them even restaurants and shops and at the same time they are complaining about children being children.
I had and loved dogs when I was growing up but they were always treated as dogs , not fur babies, not part of the family to be treated like a human child, they were loved and cared for but as an animal and they were never deemed to be as important as people.

This is true. People take their kids everywhere don’t they, ignore them, let them rub their grubby little fingers in the clothes, eat, drink, screech, give them really loud iPads and expect others to tolerate them. There should be adult only spaces. I don’t want to see or hear your child. I don’t want to interact with it on any level.

I have a child but I do not want to deal with them in my child free time. A dog has never interrupted my evening.

It was - my grandmother was quite paranoid about this when my kids were babies, she insisted we have a net on the bassinet at all times.

I have a black and white photo from my childhood of our family cat lying on the netting of the carrycot, with me fast asleep beneath her!

UraniumArthur · 15/03/2025 18:51

I really think there is more to this story. The whole tale of the dog 'silently strangling' the baby is off. Along with the parents choosing to tie it up at night but forgetting. Granted, they treat dogs differently in Siberia (and babies) but even so...

Not quite sure their answer holds up given Dachshunds were bred for badger baiting.

This. There's a dachshund near me that's like a Tasmanian Devil, it's constantly escaping the back garden. It's about the size of my dog's head but that doesn't stop it having a go. I've more than once held my dog still while the dachshund's owners' pre-teen kids run in circles trying to re-capture the little bugger. If dachshunds were the size of an XL bully they'd have been banned years ago.

But yes, never leave a dog of any breed alone with small kids. The dog we had when first DC was born was the softest lump you can imagine who regarded DC as her puppy. I still never left them alone together for a second. If I needed the loo, either DC came with me or DDog came with me, but usually both.

Scream about it and stomp your feet all you want

no one is screaming or stomping

They are. People who hate dogs not wanting to see them in dog friendly spaces. They come across as very entitled.

I never left my baby son anywhere near my animals (cats) unsupervised. Never mind dogs. A cat bite could cause sepsis. I kept them all locked in the kitchen at night where their beds and the cat flap were.

HollyBerryz · 15/03/2025 17:35

I thought it was advised cats are kept away from babies in case they smother them?

Sirzy · 15/03/2025 18:39

Dogs and small children are a combination which needs very close supervision. I hate when you see photos of dogs sleeping next to babies and things it’s not fair on either.

we had a Yorkshire terrier growing up and I very clearly remember never being left with it until I was old enough to know how to respect him.

AllyMacbealmyarse · 15/03/2025 18:35

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2025 17:39

Yeah, that was advised about 60 years ago. Then someone noticed that firstly, this had never happened and secondly, cats usually steer well clear of babies.

My dad caught our neighbours cat sitting on me in my crib as a baby, apparently I had gone a funny colour, not sure what would have happened had he not gone to check on me…

if true this is clearly awful, but what moron leaves an unsecured known to be aggressive dog unsupervised with an infant. The parents are lying or are neglectful morons who deserve neither children nor dogs.

Never2many · 15/03/2025 18:29

Well think about it. A dog can’t strangle a baby. Yes if a dog wanted to attack it could have grabbed baby by the throat, but there’s no way an aggressive dog would silently strangle a baby.

That’s all I’ll say.

Zippidydoodah · 15/03/2025 18:24

Never2many · 15/03/2025 18:18

Yeah. Sausage dog killed a baby my arse. I think we all know what happened.

I must be very dim, but I don’t know. Please elaborate?

On strangulation, this is unpleasant, but if you’re being strangled you are unable to make noise, your airway is blocked.

Dogs don't tend to grip their "prey" by the throat and silently hold on. They grab by the neck and shake to break the neck not to obstruct the airway. Rarely do they do it silently.

That's just one part of the story which does not add up.

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 18:08

It sounds unlikely, it may have been reported incorrectly and the explanation may be more reasonable.

But the upshot is never leave dogs unsupervised with children, young children anyway, that is simple common sense.
The other is that I'd like to know how many other savage sausage dogs have killed in the past year, or say 10 years, or perhaps 30, to give a chance of some decent numbers. I bet you can count them on one hand.

If I take my dog to a place that is dog friendly, then I am doing nowt wrong.
Scream about it and stomp your feet all you want.

I don't scream and shout I just try to avoid indoor places that are dog friendly because I am now allergic to animal dander.
My point is that in some cases dogs seem to take precedence over people.

SmudgeButt · 15/03/2025 18:06

dreadful case obviously but dogs are much less a threat to babies (children, adults) than another human.

This horrendous case was in Russia. Whilst I agree that we are very soppy towards dogs in the UK, the majority of vets would have advised differently if this family had been in this country.

I just googled it and couldn’t get past the first couple of lines of the article.

just……..no.

i know mumsnet loves dogs but why anyone would have their newborn baby anywhere near a dog just beggars belief.

i just went to a pub for lunch and they had dog dinners (dog fish and chips, anyone?) and treats etc. I think the problem is that people are treating their dogs like they’re a human child when they’re not, they’re a dog.

VerySkilledFirefighter · 15/03/2025 17:59

Dachshunds are aggressive dogs - they’re hunting hounds, so they’re independent and bred to kill small things. Their saving grace is that they’re smaller than most humans and can in most cases be fended off with a swift kick. That’s why they’re different to XL Bullies.

But yes they are capable of killing babies without adequate precautions. So are blankets, cuddly toys and co sleeping parents. Babies are sadly quite vulnerable in this way. This is more of a tragic accident than an incident of a killing machine striking again.

Theunamedcat · 15/03/2025 17:54

My fat ass cat smothers me in my sleep if I had a baby in the house he would be allowed nowhere near them unsupervised

When I DID have cats and a baby they were kept apart for bed and nap times and never left alone together

My point is if you can do it for cats (two indoor cats at that) you can do it for a dog and I'm really irritated by the people who can't seem to grasp the fact that they are animals and don't understand what a baby is

AnneElliott · 15/03/2025 17:53

x2boys · 15/03/2025 17:21

À large cat could probably kill a baby if it restricted their airways .

My aunt was always worried about that and bought me a cat net for the cot when I had DS.

@ohtowinthelottery it’s illegal (in England anyway) to have a dog unrestrained in a car

@crumblingschools A rule that is broken by most of the dog owning population, seemingly.
