We are going on holiday to Cyprus and daughter has bought a bunch of thong style bikinis, she’s a teenager but how do I talk to her about it. As there will be extended family

The OP has already said that she does intend to wear something similar. Unless she never takes off her sarong.

‘She’ 👀

You say in your OP “she’s a teenager” as if she’s about 14/15.

For goodness sake she’s an adult! She’s old enough to vote, buy alcohol, gamble, apply for a mortgage. She should be able to wear what she wants (given it’s legal in the county you’re visiting) without scrutiny from her family.

You sound ridiculous infantilising her. Unless you have some really dodgy and pervy relatives you’re concerned about that will be on the holiday? If not, then what she wears is none of your concern and remove the stick from your arse!

BoldRed · 15/03/2025 00:37

Oh god not the teenager in a thong bikini thread AGAIN. Always the same creepy posts. Ugh ugh ugh. Don’t feed it!

WellsAndThistles · 15/03/2025 00:32

Spoiler - Uncle Mike planning on strutting his stuffing in a teeny Speedo thong 🤣

Can you threaten to wear one as well if she wears one - I would have died seeing my Mum in a thong at that age 😅.

It’s not lying. It is important not to shame a young woman if she looks beautiful it is good to tell her. But it is also good to let her know that sometimes family members both male and female can feel unsettled by the sexualised appearance of young family members who they have known since childhood. Everybody will need to adjust but there is no point in pretending that there is not an adjustment that needs to be made whatever that is.

Tell her if she intends to wear it. You will too....and so will her Dad (if there) that ought to do the trick!

Hey, I know!

Let's all post pics of teenage girl bums in thong bikinis!!!!!

Just like the last thread on this topic!

Insist that if she is wearing the thong bikinis on the beach that she is always discreet and covered up in the communal areas of the house and walking to and fro the beach. Ask her to pack dresses, sarongs, shorts etc. and one, one piece suit.

Tell her it is boastful to parade her young unclad body among the older, unfit relatives and that she needs to be polite and have utmost regard for her grandparents (who would see wearing such bikinis as being naked.)

Spell it out. You, and/or her Dad, wear one of her bikinis around the house for a few minutes and ask her whether she can now see how many people would feel uncomfortable. Take photo of Dad from behind and send to her phone!

Was just going to post "this exact thread has never been posted before 🙄"
But you beat me to it!

BlondiePortz · 15/03/2025 00:25

I would tell you are going to join her and will wear yours at the same time and ask the other relatives to do the same

@romma how can you tell her not to wear them if you are wearing similar?

Onthemaintrunkline · 15/03/2025 00:23

Your daughter should be encouraged to consider the feelings of those around her. If she is surrounded by family who would be uncomfortable, and I hazard a guess they might be, then other types of swim/beachwear might be a better choice. At 19, yes she’s an adult, but she needs to learn she’s not the centre of the universe and other people and their feelings need to be considered as well.

Maybe ask what she would think if a male relative wore a mankini

POTC · 15/03/2025 00:21

romma · 15/03/2025 00:11

I’ve tried to say it like that. She’s saying she shouldn’t be made to cover up because there’s going to be male relatives there and that it’s their problem not hers if they are uncomfortable

And she's correct, it is entirely their problem not hers. If male relatives are uncomfortable around her because she's wearing a thong bikini then they are the concern, not her.

LightDrizzle · 15/03/2025 00:21

It was ever thus. Honestly I’d let it go. If the grandparents don’t want to see her arse they can avert their gaze.

romma · 15/03/2025 00:20

Justlurking101 · 15/03/2025 00:19

tell her you love them and order some of your own! See how she feels about her mum getting her arse out. Tell her to send you the link.

I do own a couple but also will be in sarong

Ah tricky. Well you have said the right thing She may feel differently when she is actually there. Could you take some sarongs just in case she changes her mind I agree with you entirely as I have been in a similar situation. I just emphasised how beautiful she looks but said ‘granny and grandad are not used to seeing you like that ‘ she did tone it down thankfully
