What can I do that isn't on an individual level regarding climate change?

7393827gsjsbdh · 13/03/2025 14:23

I've done all I can on an individual level, I've joined a litter picking group and have a veg patch and made my small garden 'wild'...
But I feel I need to do more.
I have so much passion on the subject, always have even when it was called 'global warming' and ' the ozone layer ' and 'being a hippy' 😅

What else is there to do?
I don't mind spending time and money, I only work 25 hours a week so I have time to put into a project but I don't know what would be best to try and do?

I'm thinking maybe I could try to start a really zero waste business?
I always daydream about winning the lottery and buying loads of land and building a waste free city but I'm not going to win and what's the point in waiting?

I know this is a little bit of a ramble but I just want to be able to look my children and my grandchildren in the eye and assure them that I did all I could.
so does any one have any ideas? what can I do today or plan to do next week or next month that would make a change?
or just a bit of solidarity?

OP, given that the whole of the UK is responsible for (less than) 1% of total annual global greenhouse gas emissions, I'm not sure anything you do on an individial level is going to make very much difference at all.

this is really a point for my argument rather than against it.
1% of let's say a million tonnes of CO2 emissions is still 10,000 tonnes.
The UK is tiny If you compare land mass and population size with other places around the world.

Also the way our emissions are tracked is skewed. If we have loads of plastic tat coming on from China, well that goes towards china's emissions not ours.

All of the clothes made in Bangladesh in primark? We'll they don't count towards our emissions. Its not accurate to say we create 1% so we don't need to reduce it. Look at the road, in the shop, at the dump, in the rivers.

I make more rubbish in a week than a family in a less developed country does in a month. I know that, I see it when I take it out to my wheelie bin. and I'm concerned and spending time and money on reducing my waste. My neighbours have less children and 2 wheelie bins. I don't know what the answer is but pretending that the UK can't compete with China or America so we needn't try is definitely not the answer.

Nope. I suggested is as an option for the OP to consider - she might like to pursue study/qualifications even part time, which may lead to a career in environmental/climate issues.

You do know that the Thames used to freeze so regularly that a fair was held on it.

You do know that there was a mini ice age in Tudor times.

You do know that the terrible summers and poor harvests contributed to the French Revolution.

You do know that if there wasn't climate change, we'd still be connected to Africa?

You do know that if there wasn't climate change, humans wouldn't even be here.

Think on and don't swallow everything you hear.

There is natural climate change on various timescales from a year or so to 100,000's of years. That is still happening. But there is also a warming that is caused by humans releasing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Scientists from all around the globe have looked at this and the causes, many studies using different methods. I am a scientist, I have looked at the data, I have thought critically about it. I wish human climate change was not happening. But it is.

myvolvohasavulva · 13/03/2025 18:34

What about community building for resilience and potential implementations of things like 'share sheds', community growing, compost sites etc. you'd bring people in who are perhaps less convinced by climate change but interested in the community aspect and could slowly educate them thus having a bigger impact for those open to it and those who aren't?

Sort of permaculture in community type of things. Lots of models to look at, also things like 'incredible edible' planting unused public spaces with edibles that the public can help themselves to, cuts down on packaging and import of basics like herbs.
Well done for trying to make a difference and be a good ancestor!

she didn't mention anything that sounded like a CS.
She was aying it's the little people being told to make changes whilst the wealthy just carry on being wasteful.

I do get heartily fed up of people shouting CS to perfectly valid questions and opinions

CS means conspiracy? If so, look again.

"there’ll be some other mass fear inflicted on us to keep us in line."

"Climate change and what the little people can do about it is Busy Work for us"

That right there is an allegation that it is a conspiracy.

I'm struggling to find highest wind speeds in Uk any more recent than 1986/ 1962 which are the highest wind speeds
For longer term this was interesting

Overall, DNV's Wind Index demonstrates that 2023 was approximately 1% less windy on average for the UK (coming in at 99.3%) and Ireland (coming in at 99.2%) than the 1996-2022 long-term reference

Edited

What about Ireland a couple of months ago? Isle of Man? Huge damage done to buildings and people.

Ask why if Climate Change is going to kill us all

  1. Why is Heathrow being expanded?
  2. Why are they demolishing huge parts of the Amazon to build a road for those who will be attending a climate change conference?
  3. Why do government ministers fly all over the world for, in most cases, nothing.
  4. Why is land being built on, leading to poor drainage and flooding.
  5. Why is there not massive investment in cheap or even free public transport.
  6. Why do various "green" initiatives always cost ordinary people money

That will do for starters. After all, if we are all going to suffer dreadful things, why are things going or not going on?

Have a little ponder.

The answer will amaze you. Could it possibly be because tis mostly bollocks? Might there be another side to the coin?

I dunno but I think it might be.

If you are still unconvinced: demolish your house, burn all your possessions, live on grass, freeze in the winter and melt in the summer. Eat very little. Join Marjorie, Crispin and Arabella in hanging from bridges, destroying paintings and stopping traffic. If you really want to make an impact, do all this while living in China. Begin walking now.

Because as a species we're stupid. We are more focused on short-term gains rather than having to take harder decisions for longer-term benefits. Politicians work on a 4-5 year cycle, they want to get re-elected so they do things that affect the population on those timescales. Climate is a longer term issue that requires investment and changing individual and national mindsets and might make them unpopular. I also don't think that it helps that politicians typically come from an economics background rather than science ones.

I don't think human-induced climate change is going to kill us all, but it will kill some people (mostly more vulnerable eg the elderly and those in poorer nations) but it will make people's lives harder.

This post contains no logic. You're actually saying that if it were true, the powers that be would be doing a massive amount of work on it instead of just passing the buck?
You must have a great deal more faith in them than I do.

True, conspiracy theories like "scientists are lying and doing the bidding of the political elite" will still be thriving in 20-30 years.
Gotta laugh at a claim that people who trust science are gullible, while in the same post ranting about a fantasy conspiracy.

What do you make of the melting ice caps and the storms we've been having the last year or so? The hottest days on record and the highest wind speeds in our normally temperature UK climate? The flooding around the world?
Do you think these are natural phenomena and that the fear about climate change is made up? I only wish it was.

Indeed. Worrying though, when the world is supposedly teetering on the precipice of climate related destruction. You’d think they’d prioritise that and not just keep ensuring the importation of fake Pandora charms and the like and ranting on about further trade deals. I mean they sure talk about it a lot and tell the people the changes they need to be making but there never seems to be any real impact on those giving the orders. Climate change and what the little people can do about it is Busy Work for us and will have no real impact, we’ve reduced as much as we can, to go further will mean a huge reduction in day to day living standards, but only for the little people obviously.

I will never comprehend why people are SO willing to believe and keep doing what these corrupt politicians tell them to when we can clearly see that they’re not changing ANYTHING themselves. It’s so utterly disgusting. Why aren’t people furious about this instead of starting threads on MN asking how they can do even more to kiss the boots of the political elite?

Book mark this post. In 20-30 years, the world will hardly look any different, most of us will still be here - not me I am pretty old - and there’ll be some other mass fear inflicted on us to keep us in line.

The ozone hole is a great example of when environmental awareness and legislation worked - a problem was seen (the ozone depletion), the cause was identified (CFC gases used as refridgerants), action taken (international agreement to phase CFCs out), nations have mostly stuck to it, and the ozone hole stabilised and is improving.

I think there is and always has been climate change.
I dispute that humans have contributed anything significant to what is a natural cycle for the planet ( climate wise, not all the other shit we're ruining the place with).

Name your sources. You are in an algorithmic loop that will send you certain things. So branch out. Research more. Look at alternative sources. Fact check.

Too many sources!
That';s akin to saying cite sources that the earth is round.
It's how they work; in colder weather they basically can't heat up sufficiently.
If you have a little look there are plenty of sites that explain this and how heat pumps work.
A quick bit of research and fact checking and you should be up to speed with it.

It was also "terrifying" in the 80's with talk of Southern England being uninhabitable by 2000 due to warming.
This was after the "terrifying" 70's where the science was very clear that we were entering a mini ice age and most of Northern England would be uninhabitable by 2000 due to being permanently ice/ snow bound.

I've been reading a lot that heat pumps aren't the amazingly efficient things that were touted.
If you live in a colder area of England you may well need a secondary heating system .
I also disagree that removing a functioning heating system for a different one is environmentally friendly.
Same with smart meters. How is replacing a perfectly working meter with a different one any better for the environment? Most people with basic intelligence know that the more appliances you have on the more electric you use. Why do you need a new meter to tell you this?

It depends on the product. I got the top of the line cold climate one and believe you me, it is nothing short of miraculous. I live in an extremely cold climate and do not need a secondary heating system. It was extremely expensive. Thankfully there was a rebate that made it doable.
But yes, in a mild climate heat pumps are obviously less advantageous.

I never saw much point in smart meters either, or programmable thermostats. I'm home most of the time, so I don't need to program the thing. I just reset it manually when needed.
