WIBU to split cost of holiday four ways?

3 adults and 1 child (age 3) going on holiday. Holiday package will not give clear split of cost. Mother and daughter will share one room. Younger daughter will share with her DC3. Would you just split the cost of the holiday four ways? They have a room each so makes sense to split the accommodation costs equally and the child will also need a seat on the plane but we had thought the child place might have been cheaper than an adult space.

Splitting four ways seems fair however will mean in practice A and B will each pay a quarter of the cost while C will pay half as she is paying for C and D but it is her child.

How would you split the cost?

Is there a better way to do this?

Is it an apartment or two hotel rooms?

2 Hotel rooms... you pay per room.

Apartment.... split between adults.
Flights... everyone pay their own (you can look up flights costs)

This!!

m00rfarm · 09/03/2025 21:30

If two adults are sharing a room they pay for that room. If a mother and her child share a room, then they pay for that room. THe flights are pretty much the same for adults and children. I would pay for your child as being the fourth person. They are taking a seat on the plane and a bed as if they were an adult.

Im taking a child-relative on holiday and someone else is paying their costs. So i ran the numbers on the website with and without him to work out what extra he costs us. The same as an adult. So for us it would be split four ways.

It's a shame you are the one organising as if your sister was doing it, it would give her a chance to offer to skew it in your favour. You can't do that for yourself! Is there a big income disparity? Sister might feel annoyed at being asked to subsidise your child if she's struggling. IME most grandparents would happily subsidised grandchildren but sometimes to their financial detriment. I think the characters involved come into this a bit.

When I go on holiday with my parent and two dc we divide by 4 because as a single parent I'd pay adult fare for the first child anyway (and also I feel that I don't want to cause issues with parent).

I don't understand this

Can you check how much would it cost 3 adults only ? And then 3+1 and the difference might be of the child.

abc 1000
abcd 1200

so the child is 200 and each person is around 340.

tho when I travel I tend to ignore my sons price and we divide bt adults rather than by people

DoYouReally · 09/03/2025 21:18

As the 3 year doesn't have an income source and is related to all 3 adults, splitting 3 ways is very fair.

I can't imagine charging my sibling for a 3 year old.

Purpleturtle43 · 09/03/2025 21:17

Maybe your mum/sister will offer to pay a bit more.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:15

I think splitting four ways probably is fair if I can't work out the actual flight costs

Id say the mother and toddler should be 40% and the other 2 adults pay 30% each as the child's place will likely have been less. Does this include facilities at the hotel? Hopefully this is all being discussed before booking

Em94 · 09/03/2025 21:14

I’ve just booked onto a holiday of my mums with my twin 2 year olds, I’ve paid the exact price each for all 3 of us.
I don’t think adult and childrens holiday prices are different anymore so I’d say it would be split 4 ways x

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 09/03/2025 21:14

A child's flight is the same cost as an adult.

The holiday should be split 4 ways.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:13

Yes me, my sister, our mother and my youngest DC

Run it through easyJet as a 2 person holiday to compare?

a good idea @Overthemoun

If you were booking it separately how much would you have to pay. It would be the equivalent of 50% as you and your child will have your own room (1 adult and 1 child is almost always the same as 2 adults)

Yes ABC and are adults 40+ and there is a three year old.

So as not to drip feed too much I am C and it is my DC who is three. I'm booking the holiday so not sure what to propose for the costing. It does seem off for the 3yo to cost the same but we will have a room to share and I don't know how easyJet prices child places on flights.

Presumably you can look up some similar holidays and flights though.

Or I quite like @SeaDragon17 's idea.

I would try to get your mum and sister to suggest a split as a starting point! Or are they saying split 4 ways?

Redfred00 · 09/03/2025 21:11

I think the child should pay 1/2 of an adult share.
So if the bill is £100 I'd divide it by 4
Each adult would pay 25
The child would pay 12.50
Then the other 12.50 is split between the 3 adults so 4.17 each.

fruitbrewhaha · 09/03/2025 21:11

EasyJet price kids flight at slightly less than adults. It would be on your booking email.

Who is on the holiday? Is this you and your sister plus your mother, plus your daughter? Also depends a bit on how flush you all are.

Octavia64 · 09/03/2025 21:11

Child pricing is to encourage bookings and get families in.

If the child is taking up an adult bed in a twin room and has a seat on the aeroplane they cost as much as an adult.

There isn't a correct answer to this one however if the package doesn't have a child price then children are charged as adults.

CaptainFuture · 09/03/2025 21:10

Ah my understanding a bit skewiff! But no I don't think you can charge adults the same to share a room as a parent and her toddler!

I think really it should be split by four/by rooms, so you pay for the room you are in, if there are two adults they split it, which inevitably means the mum pays in full for her room for her and her child. However, if it is causing so much strife and you don't want to fall out maybe split by 3.5 so all the adults pay a little more to offset the fourth party being a child.
