WIBU to split cost of holiday four ways?

3 adults and 1 child (age 3) going on holiday. Holiday package will not give clear split of cost. Mother and daughter will share one room. Younger daughter will share with her DC3. Would you just split the cost of the holiday four ways? They have a room each so makes sense to split the accommodation costs equally and the child will also need a seat on the plane but we had thought the child place might have been cheaper than an adult space.

Splitting four ways seems fair however will mean in practice A and B will each pay a quarter of the cost while C will pay half as she is paying for C and D but it is her child.

How would you split the cost?

Is there a better way to do this?

I think the child should pay 1/2 of an adult share.
So if the bill is £100 I'd divide it by 4
Each adult would pay 25
The child would pay 12.50
Then the other 12.50 is split between the 3 adults so 4.17 each.

Why?

if the company charges 25 for a child, why should grandmother and aunt subsidize?

AcrossthePond55 · 09/03/2025 23:44

Mum & Sis in one room, you and DD in the other so each room has two occupants. Accommodation should be paid by room, assuming no one is having to share a bed. If one room has two beds and the other has one, then divide by beds.

Flights you just price up with the airline and each person pays for their own (you pay DD's of course).

KenAdams · 09/03/2025 23:43

You pay for the flights for your child and split the apartment 3 ways.

As the 3 year doesn't have an income source and is related to all 3 adults, splitting 3 ways is very fair.

I can't imagine charging my sibling for a 3 year old.

I agree with this.
The parent of the 3 year old is probably in the toughest financial position to start with. I can't imagine charging my sibling more to bring her child.

HolidayHappy123 · 09/03/2025 23:28

Work out what the holiday would cost with just 3 adults in 2 rooms. Each adult pays one third of that amount and the parent of the child pays the extra amount.

RatedDoingMagic · 09/03/2025 23:22

The adult bringing a child should pay a little more than the other two but not double.

Divide the whole cost of the holiday by 3.25. The two who aren't bringing a child pay that amount and have the parent of the child pay the remainder ie 25% more.

I think splitting four ways probably is fair if I can't work out the actual flight costs

You’ll probably find, if it’s a package holiday at least you will be paying full price for your 3 year old anyway. Annoying but usually you have to have 2 fully paying adults in the room before you get a child price.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 09/03/2025 23:17

I'd split the cost of the apartment between the 3 adults. Everyone pays for their own flight and the mother of the 3-year old pays for her flight and her child's flight too.

Blueblell · 09/03/2025 22:47

I would divide the cost of the villa by 3 adults and pay your own flights

Sapienza · 09/03/2025 22:34

Some of the replies on this thread live in cloud-cuckoo land if they believe children are somehow cheaper than adults.

However, what you could do is ask if the following is acceptable to your DM and DSis:

Check how much would it cost for three adults only. Divide by three and this is what each adult pays.

Check how much extra the holiday would cost for three adults and one child. The additional cost is what the child pays.

Is it an apartment or two hotel rooms?

2 Hotel rooms... you pay per room.

Apartment.... split between adults.
Flights... everyone pay their own (you can look up flights costs)

This is what we'd do.

Yes ABC and are adults 40+ and there is a three year old.

So as not to drip feed too much I am C and it is my DC who is three. I'm booking the holiday so not sure what to propose for the costing. It does seem off for the 3yo to cost the same but we will have a room to share and I don't know how easyJet prices child places on flights.

She doesn’t have her own room and will barely eat anything., split 3 ways and buy a lunch

Derbee · 09/03/2025 22:18

Divide by 7?

Both adults pay 2/7 each,
mum pays 2/7 plus 1/7 for the child

fatgirlswims · 09/03/2025 22:17

What's the total price? (Ballpark) Is everyone skint or comfortable

If it's wasn't £1000s and more along the lines of a week in Majorca I'd be happy to lay a few extra quid to spend time With family. If it was my grand child I'd offer to pay.

I think 40% for the adult and child and 30% each for adult is fine.

This is roughly the same as 7ths rule

HoldYourHat · 09/03/2025 22:08

I think split between adults only. A 3 year old doesn’t eat or use facilities like a teen or an adult.

We are going on holiday with family and splitting equally among the adults and there is one kid, a toddler (mine and DH’s), and I think that’s generous of everyone not to count our DC as an adult. The kid will sleep in our room.

But it’s self catering, so no food. The cost is purely for the flights and apartment at this stage. All 4 people will use apartment equally, ie bed each, bathroom.

Ask the holiday company for the breakdown. For AI often the kids eat free.

Or split it 30/30/40 .

CandidGreenSquid · 09/03/2025 22:11

If it’s an easyJet package holiday, it will tell you whether or not you have a free child place. Does it say this when you go to book? If so, I’d say the price should be split between 3 adults. If it doesn’t say you’re getting a free child place then you’ll probably need to pay for yourself and your DC.

CornishDew · 09/03/2025 22:10

If it’s one apartment as mentioned above, I’d price it as 3 adults and split this amount 3 ways. The difference from 3 to 4 being the child cost that the parent of the young child pays

Whatdafudge · 09/03/2025 22:05

I mean if I were your sister I would just split it 3 ways between adults as you are family and that’s my niece/ nephew. Unless of course you have a much higher income compared to your mum and sister, and then I would expect you as the loaded sister not to want your family to cover something you can easily pay. Just talk to them about it - explain as you have here there’s no breakdown - what do you think is fair, I’m happy to cover whatever you think the baby’s cost would be X

I think you’re right. There’s no way the little one should be cheaper: easyJet flights are a flat rate per person, no child price; and you should pay the full cost of the room you’re both using. To suggest otherwise is to suggest your family members subsidise your child which seems very wrong unless offered unequivocally by, say, a parent, well in advance. Which they clearly haven’t.

Nofrogslegs · 09/03/2025 21:49

If you’ve booked the flights and accommodation separately just price the flights again for you and dc then the difference between that and your actual flight booking is split between your dm and dsis.
accommodation wise I think you do need to split per room, ie you pay half and the other 2 adults pay a quarter each. It’s not fair to expect them to pay more just because you obviously have to pay your dc share. Really you have your own room (with dc), they don’t.

bigfacthunter · 09/03/2025 21:48

My friends and I don’t count small children in group bookings so in this situation it would be a 3 way split for us. I personally think it’s the decent thing to do given that small children don’t earn money and parents of small children are often earning a lot less than they usually might.

I’d say just ask your family members how they’d like to split it. Hopefully you’re all on the same (or similar) page.

thewashingneverends · 09/03/2025 21:39

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:15

It is an apartment

The accommodation price will be a unit price not per person and the flight cost you can gauge an idea checking flight only but the 3 year old is usually a wee bit cheaper x

Bs0u416d · 09/03/2025 21:39

If it's your 3 year old and you're happy with an effective 4 way split then that seems most fair to me. However, if you were my sister and you asked, it suggest a 3 way split so maybe ask your DM and DS what they want to do?
