Neighbour mocking me?

kularni · 09/03/2025 17:44

I live in a semi detached and can hear my neighbour repeating what I say in a mocking tone.

This afternoon my husband was upstairs and shouted down to me, I said “what are you talking about” and then heard my neighbour say “what are you talking about” or when I laugh I can hear them repeat it in the same tone.

It’s getting boring now. Aibu?

Do you have hearing issues OP? I don't say this as an insult, it's just that I do and I can talk a bit loud.
Why not get walkie talkies - one upstairs, one downstairs? I got them as my DS will shut himself in his bedroom playing games with headphones on and even if I want to shout upstairs to him, he still wouldn't hear me - plus he doesn't look at his phone.

Shout out "have you seen that woman come round to see Geoffrey every monday 10 mins after Linda leaves for work?"

Ha ha do this!!

LoyalAquaOtter · 09/03/2025 20:06

My neighbours are incredibly loud, they don't have volume control, every conversation is LOUD. Even then I can't hear what they say clearly enough to make out exact sentences. I do mock them and be mean about them to dh sometimes. It is extremely annoying living next to bellowing neanderthals and venting makes me feel better.

LillyPJ · 09/03/2025 20:06

Are they mocking you or just trying to let you know that they can hear everything you say? Perhaps it's an attempt to tell you to pipe down a bit. I'm very sensitive to noise and absolutely hate it if neighbours make a noise (though my solution is to wear headphones).

flosset · 09/03/2025 20:05

As others have said you are probably being too loud
I used to live in a semi with very noisy neighbours and it was soul destroying. They were a middle aged couple with no kids and they would talk at the top of their voices and literally scream with laughter all the time. Her laugh could have rivalled Janice from friends. They also stomped about the house and slammed doors and thought it was a smart idea to put a sound bar on the party wall.
For a long time I thought it was just thin walls though when I asked neighbours from other (same style) houses from the street they said they couldn't hear their neighbours much.
Once they went on holiday and their friends with 2 children came to house sit. I barely heard a thing the whole week they were there! As soon as the neighbours were back we could hear everything again.
Some houses have bad soundproofing but some people are just so obnoxiously loud or have no awareness of the noise they make

OK, last I'm going to engage with this. You replied to my original comment and you replied, for literally no reason other than snark. You, not me. Tricky, right?

As i say, life must be tricky for you to be this sensitive.

Waterlilysunset · 09/03/2025 20:02

You both need some soundproofing

PollyannaGladGame · 09/03/2025 20:02

Does he do it to anyone else OP? And does your husband hear it when neighbour copies you?

Americano75 · 09/03/2025 20:01

Comfysheet · 09/03/2025 19:58

I said I’d rather be neither

and you regard that as taking a “pop” at you

life must be tricky for you

pimplebum · 09/03/2025 20:01

That’s seriously bad sound proofing
I would look into solutions and stop shouting

also to keep the peace and for good relations invite them round for drinks / dinner / tea and cake

biscuitsandbooks · 09/03/2025 20:01

You need to keep the volume down! How on earth are you being so noisy that they can hear every single thing you say?

We live in terraced housing and while we do hear our neighbours, we certainly can't make out individual words or anything, just things like DIY, vacuuming and the odd bark from the dogs.

chocmalt · 09/03/2025 19:59

Yes, that must be annoying, but your neighbour is probably doing it because they're annoyed, too. If you can keep the noise level down, that seems the obvious solution. Otherwise... move? Or confront the neighbour, but be prepared for them to counter with a complaint about how loud you are. Maybe just echo him (?) echoing you, and just keep going back and forth until someone gives up? Sounds like a fun way to pass some time.

Oh, I see someone already suggested that. Well, no wonder, as it does offer excellent potential for entertainment value.

Comfysheet · 09/03/2025 19:58

Odd

Yes, I would think. Anything constructive to add or are you done?

Do they repeat other people too...does your DH have an issue with it too? Does he hear them doing it?
