Neighbour mocking me?

kularni · 09/03/2025 17:44

I live in a semi detached and can hear my neighbour repeating what I say in a mocking tone.

This afternoon my husband was upstairs and shouted down to me, I said “what are you talking about” and then heard my neighbour say “what are you talking about” or when I laugh I can hear them repeat it in the same tone.

It’s getting boring now. Aibu?

"I CAN FUCKING HEAR YOU GEOFFREY, YOU TIT."

Love this!!!!! Perfect response!!!!
I have an adjoining neighbour and we can each hear almost everything that goes on in the others ones house but pretend we don't lol. We get on incredibly well and they are lovely people. The only time this facade has been broken was me texting them to apologise for my blood curdling scream, I was cleaning the stairs and a mahoosive spider, so big you could see it's bra and pants, dropped down next to me lol. And, when there was a sudden clatter of pots and pans and i squealed and shouted, you scared the shit out of me, and I heard raucous laughter lol.

Use it as an opportunity. Ask for dinner suggestions, do they know what the weather is going to do today, can you borrow a cup of sugar. Better than Alexa.

Jumpers4goalposts · 11/03/2025 06:48

You must be loud I think they are fed up and it’s their way of coping. Can you hear everything they say?

Do the same back. Or just shout I CAN HEAR YOU name.

ShineBrighterxx · 10/03/2025 21:58

You need to move house. It’s one thing having an argument with your other half, then to hear it through your neighbours wall… no thanks 😬

TwinklySquid · 10/03/2025 21:54

Can other people hear them?
Have you had your gas checked recently?

You must be incredibly loud.
Or live in very low quality attached housing.

Jesus Christ. 😂 this reply is more Mumsnet than Mumsnet.

Ashshandmaid · 10/03/2025 20:45

I fucking hate people bellowing from other rooms or floors. Why are you shouting at each other from different floors? You're probably very loud. Can you hear them in their day to day conversation? They're definitely trying to let you know how loud you are.

H0210zero · 10/03/2025 20:45

Just start saying random things like "I suck wet c@£k" etc. when they repeat just yell back. "I didn't think you were that way inclined"

tropicalroses · 10/03/2025 20:24

You know you disturb your neighbour when you shout indoors, but you all keep yelling at each other? Your neighbour isnt the one in the wrong here

I actually disagree with pp in that I think hearing your neighbours a handful of times a day is par for the course in terraced housing, your neighbours need to get over themselves (unless you're having whole convos shouting up and down stairs of course).

I hear my own neighbours on both sides practically every day but that's the nature of this sort of housing.

Totally agree. The fact that she can hear them mocking her seems to have been missed by most people. Must have thin walls for them to be able to hear each other. Sound proofing the adjoining walls seems the best idea.

Are you being noisy? The only way to stop them is to make it so they cannot hear you.

Otherwise - Ask ChatGPT to make a funny song with neighbours name and how he mimmicks you, then sing it really loud. Or...."WHEN MY NEIGHBOURS IN HIS ROOM HE LIKES TO TOUCH AN ELF."

Els1e · 09/03/2025 22:08

If you're bored of hearing your neighbour repeating you, think about how their feeling about having to listen to you. You and your partner need to talk to each other not shout.

I never shout up the stairs. If I need to tell my teen dinner is ready, I text him! Never fails to work and he comes straight down.

I hate shouting in general tbh.

I do the same

AInightingale · 09/03/2025 21:18

Do people on here really never shout up the stairs to teenagers that dinner's ready, don't forget to clean your teeth, or hurry up or you'll miss your bus? Do you all communicate by way of tie-lines in every room or something?

Fucking hell, what pricks.

I'd be shouting hey, dh I need your meaty throbber in my wet cunt NOW. Did you hear? Cunt is wet! Need meaty throbber.

😂😂

m00rfarm · 09/03/2025 21:25

When I was able to her my neighbours in another house, I actually got so incensed that I did the same - just repeated everything they said that I could hear. At the time, it was the only thing that I could do that stopped me screaming at them. I had already told them I could hear their conversations. I had banged on the walls. Stamped on the floor. I moved.

thelma57 · 09/03/2025 21:14

Omg we have this atm! We live in an Edwardian mid terrace and our neighbours have taken exception to us, we have a toddler and the walls ARE paper thin! FWIW we used to hear them screaming at their daughter…

Thankfully were hopefully moving soon.

No advice other than if you do know them and get on, are cordial, mention it to them, what’s the worst that could happen!

GreyAreas · 09/03/2025 17:51

Has anyone else heard them?

I think this is important. Could it be that you are misinterpreting sound?

BobbyBiscuits · 09/03/2025 20:45

Can you hear every word they say generally? I think you need some sort of noise cancelling insulation if so.
Have you argued with them, had words? Bin wars? I fail to see why anyone would mockingly copy your every word unless they are very mentally unwell or they really disliked you.
If they can hear you then maybe they're annoyed by your perceived noise nuisance? Not that it's intentional.

offmynut · 09/03/2025 20:43

My oh my would i have some fun with them.
But im insane when it comes to these sorts of things.

EarthSight · 09/03/2025 20:34

NaomhPadraigin · 09/03/2025 18:10

In that case probably not shoddily built with no sound proofing. So you must be VERY loud 😖

To them yes, but objectively probably not. I used to live in a terraced town house built around that time, and the partition wall between houses was just ridiculous.

When I was in the kitchen, I used to be able to hear the next door neighbour on the ground floor converted flat vomiting in their downstairs toilet or bathroom. They must have been ill or had an eating disorder or something.

The upstairs flat neighbour used to send a lot of parcels out because we could hear the sound of tape being drawn & stretched, people plugging things into sockets, even when they sneezed or coughed.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 09/03/2025 20:14

They are probably fed up with hearing you tbh! My friend has this problem with her neighbour and she will often answer back.
One morning she heard the Mum shouting upstairs to her kids, 'Do you want a bacon sandwich?' several times. My friend ended up shouting back 'I'll have one with lots of ketchup!'
You did say you and your DH were shouting up and down the stairs to each other. Perhaps talk to each other rather than shouting and maybe the neighbour will stop too!
