Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

The only times they seem to go wrong is later on after lots of drink, especially if a free bar! Still not all, just some. Xx

But just because they were in Scotland doesn't mean they had to dance if they didn't want to. People can be a complete pain at these things not taking no for an answer and trying to drag people to their feet who've said they'd rather skip the dancing. Compulsory fun at its worst.

(Before anyone calls me miserable, I like dancing myself, but DH feels too self-conscious to do so for various reasons, and people never seem to want to accept that he'd rather not, so anything with forced dancing is never going to work for him.)

Totally agree with him,There was a 1’2” difference in our heights, so you can imagine how silly we felt dancing, and avoided it like the plague unless it was a no contact one. My husband had strong wide shoulders whereas I was petite. We neither of us liked parties/dances anyway, even though we were sociable and had lots of friends. Dinner parties, picnics, buffets etc were much more our thing and we went to lots of those.
Having said that, the Ceilidh was lovely to watch, especially as most of the men wore kilts. It was real tradition and we loved the look of it. It would have been great if we’d been left alone to enjoy it!

  1. I imagine he was nervous and may have had his stag the night before, if you get my drift 😬
  2. He sat on the bride’s lap, so I imagine his legs were open
  3. I have put way too much thought into this.

1)Thanks for that clarification!
2) Not sure if I should've asked or if I am now worse for knowing
3)I am so glad I am a lesbian.😂

@KindnessisKey123 "We’ve been to two weddings with a mandatory (!) ceilidh after the dinner. At both of them we made our excuses & ducked out."

I'm assuming you hadn't noticed you were in Scotland?

Are you still friends with the couple?

No. Not for any specific reason, but the distance didn’t help. It just fizzled out.

Dutchhouse14 · 11/03/2025 16:07

Oh and a couple of August weddings where it's been torrential rain and the barn type venue needed to be reconfigured from ceremony layout to reception layout. Leaving guests huddled under a far too small gazebo outside after the ceremony whilst staff reconfigured the venue for dinner.

Dutchhouse14 · 11/03/2025 16:04

Guest accidently spilt red wine on Brides wedding dress at reception, thankfully after photographs, bride burst into tears and ran out of hall.

bringbacksideburns · 11/03/2025 15:47

My own.

Where do I start? 😀

  • Had to give back the wedding dress I really wanted. Bought reduced from a department store, had been on display so slightly changed in colour. Was assured it would be fine after dry cleaning. It wasn’t. Ended up with one that was pre-loved that my mum liked more than me. but by then had enough going round hundreds of shops trying to find ‘the dress.’
  • Absolutely pissed it down on the day, from the moment I left the hairdressers.(It was a bank holiday and just after a heat wave.)
  • Had vintage car, chauffeur assured us it had never broken down. It broke down. We had to wait ages whilst he tried to crank it up at the front and eventually admitted defeat. They had to send the bridesmaids car back for us so we were late for our own reception and missed the big grand entrance and proper greeting of guests.
  • Had this balloon arch over the top table in our wedding colours and right above where Bride & Groom sat in middle the balloon had popped and drooped forlornly downwards.
  • Photographer was off sick so they sent another who was grumpy and took awful photos.
  • Both the church (12/13th century) AND the venue were under scaffolding. We had not been informed of this until we arrived at the venue and saw it all up over the front of the building.

Come to think of it the cake was the only thing that worked out preparations wise. My guests spent most of the day telling me rain was lucky.
There may be some truth in that as we celebrate 30 years this summer.

pomers · 11/03/2025 15:43

The wrong date was put on the table menus

mussymummy · 11/03/2025 14:58

At one wedding I was at the bride got so drunk she kept stealing the microphone during the speeches to slag off her two sisters very badly. Food was stone cold when it finally came out as she had spent nearly 20 minutes slagging off her siblings.

Another wedding ran out of food, bbq style and we were last table to be served. Not enough meat to go round so I ended up with a small portion of potato salad and went round the tables stealing any bread rolls that had not been eaten. No evening buffet either so was starving.

At my very small wedding (26 in total) one guest was very drunk before the ceremony and was wandering around swigging from a prosecco bottle. Her behaviour deteriorated during the afternoon and culminated with her chasing my bridesmaid around the dinner table screaming "did u fck my husband you btch" in a very Benny Hill style. And no they hadn't!! She then blamed her behaviour on me as we had provided free booze!

Think the main things from reading all these posts is provide way too much food and don't take too long with the photos.

NoPaintedPony · 10/03/2025 23:18

Not as bad as some of them on here.
Wedding breakfast, several RSVPs indicated they were vegetarian. The venue ‘forgot’. Half a raw aubergine served eventually. Couldn’t even have the vegetables from the table as they were all cooked with meat.
Evening buffet was a hog roast, again no sides nor alternative.
Wedding was in the middle of nowhere. So no food deliveries.

I'd say that's definitely as bad! If some people had to go all day without food (other than a bit of a vegetable) that's absolutely terrible for them.

angela1952 · 11/03/2025 14:14

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 11/03/2025 04:48

Small food portions.

Everyone was unsatisfied and still hungry with the prospect of a full evening ahead on hungry bellies. Unspoken....but felt by everyone. Awkward.

Bride eats like a sparrow and obviously catered to her own appetite not realizing it's not normal.

Yes we've been to wedding where tables were gradually called to the buffet table one by one and by the time we reached it there was almost nothing left. Fortunately there was a generous cheeseboard on the dessert table and we started early on that, despite opposition from the hopeless caterers.

We travelled nearly 500 miles to our friends’ wedding in Scotland. They were wealthy, so had rented a huge house where all the guests would be staying. It was absolutely freezing! The bed only had one blanket - in March! Even though we put our overcoats over us, we couldn’t get to sleep. We got up and looked for someone to ask for more bedding, but couldn’t find a soul, so we froze throughout the night and got no sleep. Because of this, I felt quite off-colour the next morning, but went to breakfast. Big mistake as the only thing on offer was porridge (with salt, no sugar) and kippers. We were hauled out for a walk afterwards and nearly froze to death.
They had a ceilidh in the evening and it went on and on and on! We have never been so bored. They kept trying to persuade us to get up and dance but the dances there were nothing we recognised, so we didn’t. The venue was bitterly cold.
They had their children with them. Their 2 year old daughter was an absolute sweetie but their 8 year old son was a nightmare. He kept butting into conversations, ridiculed everyone and everything and was totally impossible. Spoilt doesn’t begin to cover it and he flew into a tantrum if he didn’t get his own way. We were due to stay there for 5 days, and we did stick it out, although, looking back, I don’t know how. The weather warmed up a little which helped, and we did manage to get an extra blanket. Just the one though! It was an absolute nightmare, but the scenery was amazing in the Glen we walked through.

Are you still friends with the couple?

But at least it was the same bride, as I said earlier my dad used the same speech for me and then my sister!!!!

Oh that’s awful. I’m so sorry that’s the peak of laziness.

I was at an wedding where the ceremony took place outside on a garden. Lovely setting, but it was a very hot day and no real shade available. The couple provided pre-ceremony Pimms, and people were mingling and chatting when the bride's mother suddenly collapsed.

She apparently hadn't eaten much all day since she was helping her daughter get ready and had slept poorly due to excitement the night before. That, combined with the heat and the alcohol, made her faint.

Mines similar to this, but not due to excitement, it was our wedding, dh mum was so worried about her son marrying me, she didn't eat all day but drank plenty of wine, collapsed at the reception, ambulance called, was diagnosed with diabetes afterwards and had apparently gone into a diabetes coma at the reception.

I'm not that bad, honestly.
We've been married over 20 years

Iv never been to a ceilidh but always thought they were meant to be fun.
We're you forced to do the dancing ..? Is that why you mentioned it was mandatory ,?
Not having a go here..just genuinely interested..

a lot of weddings seem to go wrong with too much alcohol and the wedding my daughter went to was no exception quite a few years ago. Very posh hotel in a small village no shop etc. Afternoon wedding and do sit down meal all going fine but then there was 3 hours break before the evening do. no where to go so sat at the bar which was open for guests. needless to say we ended up fetching her home and she did not see the evening do!

I am totally missing the point but;
1)WHY are so many grown men supposedly incapable of wiping their arse?! I've seen so much of this online on here and reddit/fb recently!
2) Okay so you've not wiped your arse-BUT unless you're putting your actual bumHOLE onto the thing you're sitting on, how is a skid going to appear? Did he have poo on his bumCHEEKS?!

Not saying I don't believe this story by the way. I unfortunately do.

Tight wad bride and groom massively under-catered the evening do.

So, a random uncle of the groom ordered about 50 Dominoes pizzas to be delivered. He was very popular - lots of drinks, lots of thanks, a whip-round.

Bride was distraught that this random uncle had shamed her for under-catering and was getting too much attention.

So her dad punched random uncle in the face breaking his jaw bone and giving him mild concussion.

'No good deed goes unpunished' as they say. Poor bloke who was just being generous-bride should have fed everyone and it wouldn't have happened.

'Recep' was a typo.

Recep Erdogan is the President of Turkey.

I got married on a beach in Mauritius. Just me and DH and luckily no guests. The celebrant accidentally dropped our wedding rings into the sand and we all spent a good half an hour looking for them. Eventually a security guard with a metal detector had to be called to look for them. This took a further 30 mins, in 38 degrees midday sun. This was 20 years ago and we are still married, although ive since lost that wedding ring again and have to wear a replacement!
