Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

Another wedding the best man was absolutely paralytic drunk and got his dick out at the reception

MayaPinion · 09/03/2025 12:55

Went to a wedding where most of the best man’s speech was taken up with him talking about how his uni room was next door to the groom’s and how he could hear them shagging all the time. Everyone was cringing.

TheSandgroper · 09/03/2025 12:55

@Fluffyholeysocks no, the toilets did not back up before the reception. They backed up halfway through the reception. At about 8 pm ish. On a long weekend. In the days of needing to find and use a public phone.

So pleased it wasn’t my wedding.

CrumpledInkBlott · 09/03/2025 12:54

Two . One wedding the Grandad died on the journey up to the wedding .

The other the best man was two drunk to read the cards ( when it was a thing ) He was chosen over my husband to be best man as he was deemed to be more sophisticated by the bride so that was a bit of Karma .

TwistedWonder · 09/03/2025 12:54

Not went wrong exactly but I went to a wedding that took place at the same time as England were playing at Euros match and pretty much every man stayed in the pub watching the match rather than coming to the church.

Pancakeflipper · 09/03/2025 12:54

My parents did once attend the wrong wedding. They got the wrong venue (the place they wanted was very similar name to the one they went to). Days before Sat Nav, mobiles etc..

They had to sit through the service (twigged it was very very wrong when the bride appeared).
Had to grab their card and gift and exit quickly.

Became family folklore. Whenever they said they were off to a wedding, one of my siblings would always chirp up with "anyone you know?

Some years ago a relative had The Wedding Where Time Stood Still.

They were very unlucky with the weather, it absolutely pelted down. All the photos had to be taken indoors. Unfortunately, timings hadn't been worked out very well, and the weather also meant that during the (overly long) gap between the afternoon and evening receptions everyone was just left sitting around, squashed round little tables in a very small bar area. There wasn't even the option to nip out for some fresh air as it was raining so hard. And there was an overly stiff and formal feel to the whole day (imho anyway) which didn't fit with my relative's personality at all, it had all been what their spouse wanted. With that plus the 'cooped up' nature of the reception it was one of the most boring days I have ever spent, hands down.

After all that, the marriage didn't even last...

The groom went home after the registry office, so the bride hosted the reception herself.

Why?

Poppymeldrum · 09/03/2025 12:53

The bride punched the groom so hard, she knocked him out

She was tiny-she struggled to fill a size zero dress, was about 5'2 and had a trail of 'crazy exs' behind her

He was 6',built like a brick outhouse (but a huge softy) and was madly in love with her (god knows why-shes a very nasty woman)

I was standing on the balcony, looking down and I saw him say something to her,she picked up the hem of her dress ran up the garden and punched him

He went down like a sack of potatoes and I ran to get help as she walked away

Her family didn't even glance up,we where all trying to make sure he was OK (he was) and as he managed to get up,she dragged him off for their first dance

She was watching over his shoulder the whole time,to make sure we where all admiring her and threw a tantrum because I'd nipped off to the loo

I'm sure she would have punched me too but I just gave her the same look I gave my children if they played up when they where young and she backed off

We went to leave as it was turning into a shitty evening and she chased us to give us cupcakes (that where as grotty as the rest of the food) and we left

Loads of people went to message the groom to see if he was OK (and offers of help to get away from her) only to be found they'd all been blocked

Never saw either of them again-shes cut his world to her family, forced him to give up his hobbies/friends and claiming benefits (she forced him to give up work and become her carer)

This was just shy of 10 years ago

I hope he's got out but doubt it

CamomileCream · 09/03/2025 12:53

Bride late to the church as in all the excitement of leaving home with the bridesmaids/family, the dog escaped and spent half an hour galloping up and down the street outside while loads of well dressed people tried to catch him!

ClowningArounds · 09/03/2025 12:52

I actually think things like the singing vicar make a great wedding! Very memorable for the guests at least, and if the B&G can laugh at it too then it makes for a fun atmosphere. In a similar vein, I went to a wedding once of an international couple where on the morning of the wedding they realised that they legally needed a translator into English, and for complicated reasons they had to use the bride's mother, whose English was 'quirky' at best. There were a number of cracking moments, including calling the happy couple 'the bride and the broom', and happily announcing 'this marriage will last for 6 months!'. We were all in tears silently giggling near the back, and luckily the bride and groom were too.

In less fun things, at one wedding the groom passed out drunk after the meal and was carried to the hotel room. The bride carried on at the party with a face like absolute thunder. And at another wedding, the best man knocked a bottle of red wine all over the front of the bride's dress. She was devastated.

Bride had norovirus - came to the ceremony and got married (quickly!) and then retired to hotel room for the rest of the day. They’re still married though, but such a shame for them.

CurlewKate · 09/03/2025 12:52

I had to go and tell everyone-including the bride-that my brother had (rightly-but oh shit) changed his mind.

The hotel lost our flowers
Best man took them the day before but when they went to get them for the table arrangements they had mysteriously disappeared

My bouquet also disappeared from the cake table later on, MIL very upset as I had given it her to put on her parents grave

It's amazing what people will nick from a wedding reception. I had several small floral displays on the tables at the reception. They were promised to close relatives afterwards but some of them mysteriously disappeared.

I also had a funky table plan that had all little people depicting bride, groom, male and female guests etc. That disappeared too. I suspect it was one of the groomsmen and his gf who were getting married the following week.

coolmum123 · 09/03/2025 12:52

Mother of the bride was a Hyacinth Bucket character with less salubrious relatives on her OH side (very Keeping Up Appearances) anyway that side of the family got very drunk and beat up the videographer! Police were called.

At a wedding reception ( different to the one above) bride’s father in law got really drunk and mooned everyone in the dance floor 😂😂😂

Another wedding reception- the best man described the bride as having a huge arse in his speech - bride was well pissed off.

how do I end up at these things?!

ETA another wedding started and ran very late and the food was so awful we had to get a McDonald’s on our way home!

Brides dad passed away just after the meal. He looked obviously very ill, but such a terrible shock.

Oh no..... think that's tops the list.
The poor bride ( and family) Flowers

SneakyLilNameChange · 09/03/2025 12:49

A friend of DHs got married mid week- the venue was lovely but I was driving as had work the next day and the food was awful. You queued to get it (no problem) but were given the tiniest school size portion of horrible lasagna, one triangle of rock hard garlic bread and a ramekin of cut up ‘salad’- lettuce cucumber and tomatoe. That was it, no more left of you were hungry, no pudding- the evening food was tiny brownies and cut up wedding cake hours later. It was a venue so not even a pub with crisps behind the bar. Everyone was embarrassingly starving hungry all evening and the guests got bladdered as we’re drinking on a empty stomach. I hated it.

minnienono · 09/03/2025 12:48

Fisty cuffs!

Lavenderandbrown · 09/03/2025 12:48

Family member had heart attack and died at hospital. This is a quite old (but true) anecdote

bomb threat. 2 receptions at venue had to evacuate venue for about 30 min in hot August weather

bride unwell day before and day of wedding. Went to A&E and they gave her intravenous fluids and pain relief. She made it thru the ceremony and part of reception. Had pancreatitis. Came out very quickly she was alcoholic went to rehab and now leads AA group in our town so it had all worked out and still married! It was a lesson tho…. Her wealthy mother (dad deceased) planned a fabulous perfect wedding $$$ but somehow manages to overlook her daughters health

Groom called off wedding day of. In the house with female family members and bridal party. Catholic priest seen arriving out the window and all the older catholic aunts went into overdrive because they immediately knew this was not good. Bride medicated and asleep at home with some family but the rest of us ate and drank the reception. No refunds so parents said… just come anyways. Even some of grooms side. She happily married now with dc so all
well. But man seeing the priest coming up the walk to the front door will never be forgotten
I was present at all these weddings.

During his speech, the brides father quoted chapter and verse on the brides three young children and who their errant fathers' were............we really didn't need to know all that did we?!

😂😂😂

PiastriThePastry · 09/03/2025 12:45

One where the bride’s gran collapsed at the reception then sadly later that evening died in hospital and one where the groom got absolutely shitfaced and tried fighting several of his groomsmen / friends… the latter was absolutely bizarre as it was so completely out of character for him, even when he was drunk. He’s normally the nicest guy in the world.
Anywho! I don’t think general little bumps in the road matter. People don’t notice half so much as you think you do!

Coffeeishot · 09/03/2025 12:44

EmpressOfTheThread · 09/03/2025 12:41

I went to the wedding of a friend whose father had died a couple of years previously, so her BIL gave her away and made the speech. However, his speech spoke of the late father and him missing the day and seeing his daughter wed. This set the bride and her mother off, they couldn't stop crying. It was awful.

Oh I've been to a wedding like this I don't really cope well with speeches but maudlin ones like this just made me cringe.

MaryQueenofDots · 09/03/2025 12:43

*no to a singing Vicar!

I went to one with a "cream tea style buffet" as the one and only meal for the whole day. It was tea and cake and finger sandwiches on a little cakestand thing in the middle of the table, not enough to go round and people were absolutely starving. To the point that some left to go to a chippy

Oh my god, that happened to me! It was awful. I think we got a cup of tea, a finger sandwich and a small cake.
We went out for a kebab later!
